    I use this knife for hunting small game and fishing. Very sharp blade and the handle is excellent. The only reason I got this knife in the first place was because it was on sale for 50 percent off due to being used as a display model. I am very happy with this purchase. Cheers!

      I have a black one now, got it from a fellow youtuber. I lend it to a friend who used it to process a wild boar and he was also very satisfied with it. If you can get a great deal like you did...well then you really got a good knife for a good price!
      Use it in good health!

    I have this knife in alox. What I like about it is that there's no play at all. The knife is tight and it looks like a fixed blade when open. The quality is superior.

    • @SpartanJohns
      @SpartanJohns  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i have been looking at the alox version...but i still have this one...and since victorinox does not use different steels...it made little sense for me to get that one too.
      But yes...the alox version looks much better. Good to know that it is also much sturdier!

    Same price as a Buck 110 where I am so the Buck gets the gig, unless I move back to where it can get to -30/-40 in winter then I'd have to look for myself at that rubberised handle, might be just the ticket.

    Thanks SpartanJohns! Amazing video(s)! its just great and the overview is really detailed and, "let's say, civilized" :-D I mean its really good to know how those knifes could be used and how could it behave. I'm not a hunter or something, but I like camping stuff. I've got my Victorinox camper which is my everyday carry tool and now I'm thinking about some more rude knife for outdoor wood making/shaping stuff. So thanks for the info. Keep it up!

      This model has one of the most comfortable handles I have ever held as far as pocket knives goes. at least in my case...better than the opinels because the shape is more like a fixblade. and it is soft. what it can use is an edge angle reduction...

  • @johnsun11

    Dont you think the orange one is alot better to find once a light flashes on it? Like when you drop it in the woods at nighttime? Or even during daylight.. Thats the reason I bought the orange one, liked black better but got alot of 'tactical black' knives so chose to go full functional with this one!

    • @SpartanJohns
      @SpartanJohns  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      for hunters and as survival items orange is the way to go...i like darker colors. to me losing a knife is not really a concern. i tend to keep track of all my tools ...but you are 100% right: Orange is the safer choice

    • @SharpiesERA
      @SharpiesERA 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      so do I but if i'm late at night near a fire, and accidently drop it (no lanyardhole) and take a burning stick, i see the orange one alottt better than the black one haha. I love black knives and everything aswell but as soon as i held the orange one i fell in love

    • @SpartanJohns
      @SpartanJohns  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      the orange one does look good, i admit. i just like blak knives more..my Endura is a bright blue..and that would be my exception.
      if I have to choose a knife handle material...i would chose black or brown, grey or some other dark colors...the bright ones look great when new however with time they fade...

  • @23madskilz23
    @23madskilz23 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I wonder how well the edge would hold while skinning. If it-s the standard victorinox steel then it's pretty soft, so skinning a boar would require sharpening during the process.

    • @SpartanJohns
      @SpartanJohns  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +23madskilz23 I have hunting buddies who only use Vic's to skin, process deer and boar. Some of them steel their blades during the process, some have no problem. What I noticed was that some people really do not mind working with a duller blade

  • @Traderjoe
    @Traderjoe 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    It looks very ergonomic. I think Wako showed one of these a year or two ago. I prefer one hand opening and closing for EDC knives and wish it was like that and also wish it had a pocket clip.

    • @SpartanJohns
      @SpartanJohns  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +traderjoes It is very comfortable in hand. I had a lot of fun working with it. I only wish I could have done more and see how it feels with an edge angle that I am more accustomed to.
      I think that in this case a pocket clip would hurt rather than help when it comes to comfort in hand as this one really feels very pleasent like it is. I could see myself buying one of these and working with it at the cabin or taking it along as a backup on hunting trips

  • @TimBlankJ
    @TimBlankJ 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Interesting .. might have to test one for myself .. much lower edge angle of course. Take care!

    • @SpartanJohns
      @SpartanJohns  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +TimBlankJ If I can find one at a good price I will definitely get it. I did like the rubber handle...At least in the old weather.
      I wonder if it will do well when it is hotter outside and your hand sweats. I did get blisters once from a rubber handle because of that.
      My choice would also be to go for a lower edge angle. 17-20 dps. I do not know how well Vic's behave with a lower edge angle since I was always under the impresion that the blades are a bit ofter compared to other brands. They are easy t sharpen and I never got a chip in a Victorinox knife...

    That seems to be one of very few folder that behaves like a "real" knife. I have been looking at the Helle Dokka that is made here in Norway. They seems to be in the same ballpark. I like that it is possible to get them with a wooden handle. It gives a more traditional look. Maybe the rubber works better though :)
    Thanks for the review - Martin

    • @SpartanJohns
      @SpartanJohns  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +NorwegianWoods First time that I held this folder in hand I was a bit impressed. I like the feel of it. I do like wooden handles but I preffer micarta for all knives, fixed or folding. Even over G10. This being a hunting knife I think that the rubber handles are best suited for it especially in cold weather. Only downside is the price but if you are only looking at one knife to take along for camping...I think that this is indeed a good option as it is compact and opened it does feel safe in hand while working with it. Not a replacement for a fixed blade but as close to it as possible considering comfort in hand.
      Thanks for stopping by
      Denis

  • @SalveMonesvol
    @SalveMonesvol 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    50 degrees inclusive, in my opinion, is the best angle for a micro bevel. and by micro I mean less than 1/10th of a mm, after that, just use the original factory angle or, if you are as crazy as me, step it. 50 degrees for the tip, then convex grind that gradually becomes 30 degrees after the first 1-1.5mm (where the blade is about 1mm thick). That way you prevent most blade damage while maintaining ease of use.

    • @SpartanJohns
      @SpartanJohns  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +SalveMonesvol I find that with Vics I can get all i need from a blade with a 20 dps edge angle... The steel is a bit softer but, honestly, i never worked with one so much in one sitting that it went dull on me. And I have never had a chip in a Victorinox blade. If I was to use this model for procesing game that would probably change since I would most likely hit bone at a certain point.
      With most steels I found that a 40 degree inclusive edge angle will do a good job. Very few have gotten microchips or rolls...and working with a 20 dps edge angle is easy enough no matter what I cut..
      I am currently playing around with smaller edge angles on convex knives...I have recently reduced the edge angle on a paring knife so much that it rolled while cutting bread on a wooden board...that was a bit much i guess...I should have thought about it more but afterwards I put a steep microbevel on it with an aprox 20 dps edge angle and it took no further damage while maintaining the cutting performance....

    • @SalveMonesvol
      @SalveMonesvol 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      SpartanJohns I guess it's a lot of trial and error. I have a hundred cheap knives for experimenting, a couple of medium price folders and kitchen knives, like victorinox spartan, wenger, etc; and 5 higher end "FACONES" plus a 12" blade 5mm thick butcher's knife.What I really lack, are ideal tools because I live in an apartment and can't make too much noise or have a large bench sander: Next month I'm moving to the countryside and hopefully will be able to perform practical tests. If I had the money, an electron microscope would help a lot too.

    • @SpartanJohns
      @SpartanJohns  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +SalveMonesvol I also live in an apartment so there is not much room for powertools. I get by with sandpaper and larger sharpening stones...it can be a bit more dificult but you can learn a lot in the process.

    A knife with a scandi grind is more appropriate for cutting wood. You have a hunting knife there. The orange color is so you can find it when dropped onto the forest floor when field dressing a carcass.

    • @SpartanJohns
      @SpartanJohns  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The name kinda gives that away, doesn't it?
      For working wood I personally prefer full flat ground knives or full height shallow convex knives. But depending on the edge angle you put on the blade...any grind will do just fine.
      My tests are meant to give the viewer some points of reference. Things which a table top review won't reveal.
      Hope you liked the video nevertheless.

Looks almost like kitchen knife from IKEA. I know this is not very important for knife work, however if You paying for something about 60£ (price in UK), You want have also cool look. Especially, when You are collecting knives.
    Anyway, thank You for the very useful video. I like the way, how You talking - so calm, without scream. For people, which like to spend most of free time with nature, is really hard to watch some videos, where people screaming so laudly.

    I would like to have this knife, as it is a good looking knife, and is high quality (Victorinox). The steel is 420 HC, the same steel Buck Knives uses for most of their knives. The Pro Hunter is comparable to the Buck 110 in size, intended use, steel, quality, but I can buy a Buck 110 at Walmart for under $30 US. They have been on sale for months. I cannot justify paying twice as much for basically the same knife. The Buck 110 is sharpened at 15 degrees per side, which you could do with the Pro Hunter. When heat treated correctly, 420 HC is a good knife steel. If the price comes down, I will definitely buy a Pro Hunter. I know I would enjoy using it.

    According to Victorinox the steel is 440C. Made in Switzerland. Don't know where the China stories come from. Says Swiss Made on the handle, and that is what Victorinox says. Thus more expensive because Swiss labour is well-payed.
    After one year, I agree about changing the angle, but it is great then for wood. Sturdy AND comfortable. Lot of nice looking Spyderco knives just don't hold up for rough outdoor use, and are painful in the hand for serious endurance. Not as overpriced as seems. I think it may well outlast a Buck 110.

    • @SpartanJohns
      @SpartanJohns  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Time will tell. I can tell you one thing that I noticed: this is the most comfortable folder I ever worked with. I lend it to a friend of mine who also took it out hunting. He was also very pleased. I modified the edge angle to make it perform better. So I can controll it better. By the way it performed...I would say 440C is about right. I have a black one now, got is as a gift from a fellow youtuber, have not had any problems with it so far.

    Thanks!

    • @SpartanJohns
      @SpartanJohns  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The spine is rounded. But you can square it out.
      As a secondary knife it is a bit on the heavy side.
      I got one with a black handle as a gift and carry it with me off and on in my hunting bag. For backpacking trips I prefer to carry an Opinel No10 Stainless

    • @lmbraga
      @lmbraga 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm also carrying an Opinel (Nº8) Stainless. But with the rainy winters here in Portugal, something I can use easily with gloves is a plus.
      Found the black version on Amazon for under 50 €, had to get it. Just wish the wood handle version wasn't so much more expensive.

    If was using a belt sheath anyway. I would go with the swisstool spirit, or a fixed blade. The swisstool does so much more for a few extra bucks. Great look at it, as always man.

    • @SpartanJohns
      @SpartanJohns  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ch33no I like the spirit tool but it is not nearly as comfortable in hand as this one is. A multitool offers way more options and it could come in handy in more situations but as a camp knife where cutting things is the priority i would go with this one...simply because it is so comfortable and stable in hand

    • @Ch33no
      @Ch33no 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +SpartanJohns Yeah but I'm sure most of your audience already carrys a pocket folder capable of those tasks..... A fixed blade would also be a more worthy option for bushcraft. Don't you think?

    • @SpartanJohns
      @SpartanJohns  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ch33no A fixed blade will always be better than a folder, imo. It will be more comfortable and it will be capable of doing more things...any fixed with a thickness of the spine greater than 2 mm will be able to help you out much more than a folder...batoning, prying aso...
      My friend, the one who asked me to sharpen this folder, has it for camping chores and mostly cooking or maybe sharpening a stick every once in a while. If that is what you need a knife for any knife will do but I feel that this is a good choice since it is a folding knife that is "high visibility" so you won't lose it as easily and very comfortable in hand, so if you have to make your fire with it, it won't hurt your hand. And should you ever really have to depend on this knife, i think it is not a bad choice...
      Of course a MT will do all those jobs but in all honesty most people shy away from multitools because of their weight...I like my Surge and I take it with me everytime I go out but I do that because I like playing with it not really because I need it...

    bought one in my last trip to Canada. paid 70 CAD (pricey). only con is that it lacks a lanyard hole: if it falls on the snow, it is gone. just for not putting a lousy lanyard hole!. I put a thin lanyard on the blade but ... not very good, I would say. otherwise, the knife will probably last for 20-30 years if used it for what folders are meant. btw: it is a chinese make (shame!): we keep Feeding the Monster. best from Greenland.

    • @SpartanJohns
      @SpartanJohns  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on what purpose you have in mind. A bit too bit for edc but as a working knife it certainly fills the hand and with a reduced edge angle it can do just about anything you imagine it could do.

      On these style of knives of in general?
      On these style of knives, which were made for hunters, a pocket clip might get in the way of comfort in hand.
      They do make pocket clips for their multitool knives. some have them built in and some you can purchase and attach yourself.
      Mostly, I think, it is because they have been doing it this way for so long, it works for their customers, so they find no need to change a thing that works

    Nice folder. Overpriced in my opinion. Looks a lot like the Gerber Gator. Gerber sells the Gator 154CM folder for $37 on Amazon. I think it is every bit as good as the Pro Hunter for a lot less. And if you really want to go frugal there is a Gator with the Gerber mystery steel for $25 in Amazon. I like the 25 degree edge. For me it works in most instances real well. I tired 20 degree. It is sharper, more like a razor, but I think it dulls, rolls and chips faster. By the way, after sharpening lots of knives, to get a quick real good working edge, I sharpen with a 120 grit stone and then I strop. That is my favorite edge. It feels toothy, but so far it one of the best cutting edges. What do you se to test your sharpness?HA, you'll laugh at what I use. To really test how sharp a blade is, I use none other than toilet paper (unused of course). If your knife cuts through toilet paper, IT IS SHARP.

    • @SpartanJohns
      @SpartanJohns  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +mikedifeo I looked at the Gerber Gator here...it is at about the same price as the Hunter Pro. With 154 CM steel. And that would be the way to go. I have only experienced Benchmade's 154CM steel and I have to say that I like that one. My 551 Griptilian has a 20 dps edge angle and it took no damage. 25 dps is definitely sturdier but I also find that unless the grind is thinner than usual you will have to put more force behind each cut. I think that the best sollution would be a 20 dp edge angle with a +5 degree microbevel. It protects the edge from minor damage and does not influence cutting ability that much.
      A toothy edge can work very well in some cases. People that give me knive to sharpen are not really ones who sharpen themselves so I try to put on finer edges that will last longer. I found that for most these are better. I only keep a few of my knives with toothy edges. And I must admit that they can be fun to work with. Kept my ZT0350 with a 30 dps edge angle and a toothy edge for rougher jobs, cutting dirty plastic bottles and cardboard at the cabin. I liked the way it worked. It gt thru things with relative ease and kept a decent edge.
      I must admit that I never tried to see how knives cut toilet paper... I check for microchips with printer paper and for my sharpness test I like to see if they can shave. I like my edc folders to shave with ease and the ones I take in the woods I like them to shave as well but they must not really be "razor sharp". If they take off hairs it is good enough for woodworking.

    I like many Victorinox products, but this one is junk. It's a horrible choice for even taking into the woods. It's a Spyderco with cheap steel. Just another silly flip knife out to grab a share of the huge market of people who don't know anything about knives, less about the wilderness, and very little about hunting.
    It will, unfortunately, probably sell wel because it is a Victorinox, and because so many people don't know how silly flip knives are for almost everything, but it's still junk.
