  • Getting the train from Norwich to King’s Lynn isn’t exactly a direct route these days. Even though they're both in Norfolk I have to travel via Cambridgeshire! Join me as I take the long route from Norwich to King’s Lynn and explore the Fen Line! #railway #trainenthusiast #railwayhistory #railwaystation #norwich #kingslynn #sarah #trains

    So nice to see a female train enthusiast. People think I'm weird but they really don't appreciate the wonderful stock and buildings. I once missed a Pacific ( my favourite) so I feel for you! Keep 'em coming and thank you so much. I remember Watlington when it was Magdalen Road

      @@sarahwiththetrains I know! I go to train events e g steam and model fairs and men fall over backwards with shock when they find out. My husband bought me railway metal sign at auction and the auctioneer told those assembled that the gentleman had bought the sign for his wife...there was a sharp intake of breath and a collective look of horror and pity...I.e " he's a dead man!"

      I encounter this a lot in the IT world and aviation too, it's really very weird and completely illogical. When that attitude appears, I enjoy asking what biological factor they believe prevents women from participating. Usually met with silence...

    Brilliant video Sarah! I’m from Lynn originally (now in London) - great to see a video about these lines and Ely which I know so well. I’ll never understand why they didn’t keep a connection between Lynn and Norwich, even if it meant changing via Dereham which is another route people used to take back in the day. Great channel!
    All the best,

    As you point out it is a circuitous route from NRW to KLN nowadays. That service from NRW appeared to be a well patronised one. I doubt that there was another person onboard heading for KLN. Nevertheless, you appear to have had a good day out. It would appear that Geoff Marshall has laid down the basic parameters for station reporting. Did you try to find out why Downham Market had been chosen for the NSE makeover?

    The only bit missing ( forgive me if it did get included ) is that the double track formation disappears shortly north of LittlePort and does not reappear until shortly before Downham Market station. This causes operational headaches as it immediately restricts the flow of all rail traffic in both directions.

    I took a long route from Cambridge to Norwich. If I have the time, I intentionally take the longer journey or get off at an intermediate stop. This means that I would take Cross Country to Ely, then EMR to Thetford, then Greater Anglia to Norwich. Going back using the same company to Diss, Stowmarket, and change there back to Cambridge. I only do this if there is a second train within 40 minutes

    Very enjoyable video, covering the tortuous route that now links two of the largest towns in Norfolk. The A47 road between them is terrible. I do like Ely, however. It is a lovely town to visit, and the station is very well served- I've made some videos there myself.
    London politicians and some of the old British Railways managers (before British Rail business led sectors) have served Norfolk badly, being determined to close the East-West routes and the Hunstanton line (which passed through my village). The campaign to reopen the latter line is a waste of time- it won't happen as the schemes being dreamt up are totally cuckoo.
    Pity you missed walking around Downham Market. That is also quite a nice town.
    As a matter of interest, there were also several long lost branches off the line. One short spur off the line between Watlington and Lynn served the very short-lived oilfield at Setchey. Not many people know about it as the extraction of oil sands was not economical and there is no sign of it now.
    Apart from the cold and the muddy footpath, I hope that you enjoyed the journey.

    Hi Sarah, good vlog thank you. There are still some freight sidings at King's Lynn (opposite side of Morrisons). They are used by the Middleton Towers sand trains to run around prior to going to the quarry for loading or heading up North with their load of Silica sand. There is generally at least one a day (Mon - Sat) and sometimes two, they are predominantly Class 66's though there is a DB Freight Class 60 on Fri or Saturday. Hope this helps and keep up the good work!

As most of their fleet are being replaced by 720/6 Units. Also quite rare to see freight round the KL Line? Wonder why there were there! Maybe they were on diversion. Hopefully one day the direct service will be reintroduced. A lot of the route is still there as a goods and heritage railway or mostly clear of obstruction (Norwich - Wymondham - Dereham - Swaffham - King's Lynn). Only major exception is near Dereham but a new route to the north would be better anyway as it'd avoid reversing.

  • @IndigoJo
    @IndigoJo ปีที่แล้ว

    Quite odd that they *restored* Downham Market to NSE colours rather than just having left them that way because it wasn't important enough to refit when the franchise changed hands countless times after privatisation. Although it was part of NSE, Norfolk isn't generally considered the South East any more than the bits of Devon and Somerset covered by the line out of Waterloo (also formerly NSE) are. A weird thing about that part of Norfolk was that although it was served by NSE trains out of London, its TV was from Yorkshire.
    King's Lynn itself was always just Lynn and that's how the locals still refer to it. Much like Bognor (Regis), the royal name was given as an honour for something or other. There's a freight company there called Lynn Star.
