These are very nice kits. I have built several of them. I have not had issues with using the Branchline Trucks. The most important thing with them is to ensure the frame is square when assembling them. I assemble the trucks without gluing them. Once I get them square, I use a little Pro Weld with a tube applicator, and they are secure. I have never had a derailment issue. But, I do agree with you, assembling the trucks does take a bit of work and patience.

I love the Branchline trucks. I have worked out a pickup system for them as well as retaining most of the center sill. I have not done a video, did some powerpoint clinics a few years back. I do body mount my couplers and add I-beam extensions to the sills. I don’t know how many folks have worked out the issues with the trucks.

Why not use an Athearn truck from their heavyweights?

i have the same car. it was a kit. the instruction manual told to remove or shorten the center cill in order to over come the derail issue. i did that. now i still have my original trucks. and they do fine. the only thing i had a issue for derailing was when i did not mount the latter back in right and that caused to truck to hit it and derail. that was no ones fault of my own. but i fixed that and it is fine.

I have a few of these kits and same trucks as well. I just went to walthers and got a pkg of their universal truck adapters and haven't had any derail issues since.

Man, many thanks to the two of you.
This is my FIRST model for my first train as an adult. I figured that if I blew chunks on the paint and re-lettering than I would rather blow it on a $30 kit than a $400 locomotive :-). BTW, my train shop has many of these kits in stock. I am enjoying the build.
But, as I pulled the sprues out I looked at the mess that is the trucks. I knew that would be a problem. Problem solved. Again, many thanks.

Hi, you've done the same thing I'm doing! I make the trucks swivel on the outside end, however. there is a bit of a problem with the center-sill but it can be trimmed to fit. The car-ends don't swing as wide on the curves that way. The problem of clearance exists mostly when installing the 11'wb 2411 trucks. Check your prototype! The Walthers 2410 are correct 10'6" trucks. If you are replacing with 242's....you gotta do some re-arranging. I use the Walthers adapters the other way around (bottom up) bored out to 3mm and fastened with a shouldered (3mm) 2mm screw and spring...like the brass cars. I build up the bolster out of plastic. I replace(d) the wheelsets in the Walthers trucks with Reboxx 1.035-40 (ends), 1.020-25 (middle) and that clears the adapter. Oh..and get rid of those unsightly truck screws! I drill out and tap the leaf springs for M1.7x8mm countersunk screws . If you are lighting the car (which I don't) you have a threaded post to attach your wire to.

Some years back, when these were released, I asked guys at Branchline why they did 10'9" trucks? They told me it was a compromise. Their trucks seem a bit undersize as well, however I got a bunch of the Branchline because it was the only game in town. I used TCY for the 2411 trucks when I could get them. Thank you Walthers!

Have you guys thought about Athearn genesis heavyweight trucks they fit on the cars with little mods and Rivarossi trucks work good too but still that worked for me because I try do do the least work as possible, but still for you guys it worked and it looks good.

Best how-to demonstration yet. I have built many of these cars. Very detailed and fun to make. Thanks for the tip on making them run better.

Have you considered trying out the replacement bolsters that American Model Builders offers on their webpage, which are designed to allow an easier swap to use the Walthers trucks in place of the branchline ones? These replacement bolsters go together easily (no cutting necessary).

Thanks for the help on this model. I’m a retired Army Infantryman so I now have time to dedicate to my hobbies and interests and I picked up one of these Blueprint Series kits at a train show for nearly nothing. I found the detail on this model is amazing when compared to similar factory detailed versions. I hate assembling those trucks though, not much room for error so I also installed an aftermarket truck set and it’s a LOT better. I highly recommend these if you ever come across some.

Absolutely this is a must for this model. I tried to get the included wheel trucks working well but it was a serious pain for reasons mentioned in this video. I adjusted the pivot plate for each truck since you can’t just raise the model higher and higher to get it to clear and turn well. You may want to trim material from the new trucks or the car frame material or both.
