The Mora Eldris is a great choice for an fixed blade carving knife. The small handle fits a kids hand really well. Its what I gave my nephews when teaching them how to carve wooden swords at camp!
Opinel are just incredible! Cheap! Super sharp, easy to sharpen and slices like its cutting through butter
Thanks, Mr. Andersen and Thomas. I CACKLED at the most serious question AND the answer. With respect to the first question, the Huntsman is always a good, choice, but for a few dollars more, I prefer the Victorinox Ranger. It has everything the Huntsman does, but also features a long and versatile file that I find supremely useful for woodwork. It's pretty handy for non-woodwork tasks too, since it includes a metal file.
For the camping teen needing a whittling/camping knife, I'd recommend a Morakniv Eldris. Pocketable in its sheath, Scandi-ish ground, comfy handle, colorful. For camping, the SAK Camper is the same as the Hunter, but w/o scissors (the blades can do most of that stuff) or package hook, if you don't need those things
Morakniv Craftline Precision is a much better tool for whittling
I agree with Mora Eldris, it is safe, compact and comfortable. Plus it comes in several colors that can appeal to youth and adults alike. I personally have 3 of them.
I highly recommend any of the Flexcut knives for whittling. A great first whittling knife would be the Flexcut Whittlin' Jack. Under $50, and it whittles like a dream.

This is my style. Been whittling for many years and really enjoy the traditional knife aesthetic. I’m in love with the entire Jack Wolfe lineup, but it’s way out of my price range. Would love to see more knives like them in the budget space. Got a beautiful Civivi Appalachian Drifter on super sale and that’s probably the closest I’ve seen in terms of modern renditions of classic styles in an affordable range.
My dad was a whittler and used a Case Trapper. The first pocket knife I got for my 8th birthday was a Craftsman Stockman. I think they were made for Sears by Case because the Medium Stockman is so similar. That's what I used for everything from whittling to cleaning fish until I joined the Air Force.

Scandi grind is absolutely stellar when dealing with the process of making a larger bit of wood into smaller bits. If one not are obsessed with folding knifes, nothing beats the Mora 120. Large birch wood handle that can be modified to fit your hand, and a about 2 1/4 in (60mm) carbon steel whittling blade, that rust if not treated with care, but take an insane crisp edge with a simple strop. No finger guard, so perhaps not for kids.
Rough Ryder is really killing it with traditional slip joints at a great price and very good quality.
for my kids and as a scoutmaster I tried to start out my kids and scouts when asked with a SAK. that one you recommended would be high on my list for a first time camper or a hike across the US. add a small pair of pliers and you have everything you need to fix almost anything that needs fixing while camping.

Old Timer makes a 6 bladed pocket knife specifically for whitllin. It only runs about $20 bucks, carbon steel blades.
The blades in the Old Timer Splinter are trash steel. Every carver I've seen review it says it won't take a decent edge and won't hold any edge for long. You get a lot for $20, but it's the quality you should expect.
You'd better know what you're doing with a whetstone, because those blades are gonna need not just sharpening but some need reprofiling completely.
The corkscrew on the Huntsman is also useful for safely removing the pit of an avocado. 🥑
It also works for picking a handcuff lock. Don't ask.
@@tmutant There's a brand called ASP (Armament Systems and Procedures) that has their own take on the Victorinox Classic SD and there's a model with a handcuff key among its tools.
Some good choices. For the scandi option don’t forget the Cold Steel Finn Wolf if that Lars Falt is too expensive.
Flexcut makes some great folding carvers with the top tier being the Carvin’ Jack. Old Timer makes a similar one called the Splinter but needs work on the blades (they come pretty dull).
The best witting knife in edc format is cold steel tuff lite mini. It has sheepfoot blade, hollow grind, good tip for very tiny details, and a very tiny edc format , it can be almost a keychain knife. Am whittling on the go with vix camper and cold steel tuff lite mini.
Finding a pocket knife comfortable enough to really whittle was not easy for us. I tried a few for our teen boys and knives like the SAK are simply not comfortable after awhile and the locking mechanism is a worry for beginners. In our case, the first traditional Boker knives we tried actually caused blisters after ½ hour of whittling. Even my most comfortable folder the Real Steal H7 is not comfortable after awhile if I'm really whittling away. We have Opinels and the handles are OK, but when pushing on the back of the sharp edged and thin blade, also not very comfortable. The boys then tried the basic Mora 511 with thinner blade and a finger guard and never looked back. One folding knife I saw awhile ago here on the channel but haven't tried yet is the Becker BK 40 which looks like it would be comfortable enough for such a task.
David you’re the best, if you can, looking for a classic knife design (similar to the buck 110,112, and/or the cold steel ranch boss)
Must be locking, preferably an aggressive clip point blade and a blade steel that is not prone to chipping, recently picked up a similar design with some decent carbon steel and the blade was rolling and chipping way too often. Thanks! Keep the amazing videos coming pls :D!
why not just get the ranch boss? sk5 is just 1084 carbon steel which is super tough stuff. won’t hold an edge long but it’ll take a crazy sharp one

The Mora 105 and 120 are amazing carvers. I bought both for my son for Christmas. He loves them. 🔪🎸
Spoons, tent stakes, pot holders, digging sticks and hiking sticks are common carving projects around a campfire and for those, I would much prefer the Casstrom Lars Fält Lockback than either the Case or the Vic although the saw on the Vic can be handly for cutting sticks to length. Also worth noting, learning to carve with a slipjoint requires some specific safety training so that a young carver does not have a blade close on their fingers. Worth noting, Boker does make some slip-joint sized knives with locking blades (as does Victorinox and Rough Ryder). As for whittling vs carving, I've been a carver/whittler for over 60 years and I tend for the most part not to get bogged down in these distinctions but I can guarantee that you will "whittle" a lot of points on sticks while camping. :) My overall suggestion is to buy a fixed blade such as a Mora 120 or the Mora 12658 (a little safer to use) and get the Vic too, for the saw and awl, which can be used to make holes in wooden utensils.
Oh yes and the opinel are my other favorite. I just love knives that are great but not so expensive. The opinel is a gem and every should own one.
How about showing an assortment of folders with washers rather than bearings? I'm interested in knives that can simply be washed out, too. I only like locking knives, and am glad to see recent increase in 14c28n mentions. I also like a finger safe forward grip, as in Spyderco Native 5.
I love washers cause i hear ball bearings need cleaning. Not a fan of being a maintenence droid.

If you in your Victorinox insert a small eye glas screwdriver in the corckscrew you will reduse the hotspot that the corckscrew potentally give I also recommend to ad a pin in the hole in the scale so you have a pin to remove splinters with.
The first knife I will give to my kids for camping knives will be swiza. Very similar to victornox but with grippy scales and a locking main blade.
My go to for carving and whittling is the QSP worker, it's a nice modern traditional that would be my answer for every question today. Also it's spine is nice and sharp for scraping.
For the whittling question, they specifically asked for a more modern knife. I might have suggested Jack Wolf Knives, a Rat 2, or Esse Dozier.

I know it's not a popular opinion but the gerber stakeout is a pretty great whittler. It's soft so you gotta sharpen a lot but the shape of the blade and profile make it really nice knife for figure carving. Plus it feels good in the hand even though it looks like a crazy mess of sharp edges.
There are a pair of makers putting out traditional knives with upgraded steel. Cold Steel actually has a couple in 8Cr13MoV. Right around $30, and just nice knives all the way around. And, of course, Boker has a full set of traditional knives. Some have D2 steel, and I hear there's even a knife store that convinced them to make a Barlow style slipjoint in 20CV...
As an avid whittler, I just gotta add that the Mora 120 is a whittling dream! The Case Seahorse is pretty good too especially if you put some whittling edges on it. There are several Great Eastern Cutlery models I'd mention because they're at the top of my list but they're not really something you can just go buy now so unfortunately I can't really recommend them.
The Craftline Precision is great for wood carving/whittling
Fieldmaster over the Huntsman everyday of the week and twice on Sunday. They're identical except the Fieldmaster has the Phillips instead of the corkscrew. I rotate through about nine or ten everyday folders but I find I carry the Fieldmaster most frequently.
What pocket knives do cooks like to carry? Cooks work around knives all day. It would be interesting to know what knives they carry for EDC.
I was going to say that a good alternative to the expensive Jack Wolf swayback is the Viper Knives swayback (about half the price with amazing quality and M390) but they appear to be sold out now. I think most swaybacks make great whittling knives so there's quite a few options. There are also amazing whittling options available from GEC and are mostly high carbon steel.
Love the video! Another good whittling knife I like is the Boker Yukon. That knife has one of the most comfortable handles ever especially for whittling! Keep up the great work !
I find corkscrew SAKs uncomfortable for long whittling sessions. The screwdiver lies more flush and it's therefore more comfortable. The fieldmaster is the same as the Huntsman but with the Phillips.
Very fine reviews, love some whittling - walk, cut a stick then trim, de- bark and continue on.
My grandpa was born in 1886 was a Wittler. He did walking canes and balls inside of wood. He only used a small pocket knife
Victorinox have also a knife special for kids, with a dull point. Not nice for whittlin' maybe, but perfect as a first knife. Surprised that you didn't mention the mora carving series. It is awesome for playing with wood, and being fixed blade makes it not fidgety. And yes. Opinel is great. Just be careful. I am an apologist of giving kids a sharp knive and teaching how to use it safely instead of risking them to get used to a "safe" dull blade that leads to very nasty surprises after in life. But Opinels come scary sharp from the factory. Especially the carbon ones. And I really mean it. They cut like a razor at the slightest mistake. So be sure that a kid knows his ways with a knife before giving a Opinel. I literally saw seasoned adult bushkrafters cut their hands with those.
Marking knife... flat piece of bar stock with a chisel grind and a double 45 degree tip... or You can make them out of old butter knives.
I modified my carbone opinel turning the tip into a drop point and softening the angle of the heel to make it safer, It's really good.
As a Brit, I loved the reference to The Rozzers, although you could also have called them the Peelers or Old Bill!

Not mentioned here but my favorite for whittling is 4 blade congress knife
I can’t believe it took me this long to realize the missed opportunity of not using the Lightning OTF as the mascot for your Lightning Round.
Besides that, I cannot recommend the Peña X Series enough to modern traditional fans. An important detail is that their OEM is Reate, king of the Chinese producers. The Raptor is a seriously underrated design; I routinely see it selling for much less than other Peñas on the secondary market. Its smaller size, thin blade stock and modified Wharncliffe are perfect for edc.
I have never heard you mention either Johan Ellis or Vincenzo Balistreri. Truly exceptional Knife-makers.
I have roughly 30 slip joints from my younger years in collecting, but sadly they just sit there in a drawer unless they are lucky enough to be out for their yearly clean and oil. Such a sad life they have now. Once I transitioned to modern models with locks and the ease of one hand operation, and then the better steels rearing their heads (which meant less sharpening), I kinda lost interest in the traditional knives. Those Jack Wolf knives, which are truly stunning, still have no locks or one hand operation. That Finch knife, on the other hand, is calling me. That is one I somehow overlooked. I really am impressed!

Two questions for you that are both serious:
1. Since I've been seeing a troubling number of comments about Quality Control issues with several popular brands' lower-priced models (particularly with WE subsidiary brands, but others too) I am searching for an EDC model from a maker with consistently high quality in their builds as well as their choice of material. Since I am all about quality, I'm thinking that one of the following choices would be best for a light-to-medium duty (occasional whittler) blade: Nitro V, S35 VN, CPM 3V, or 14C28N. If a left hander, such as me, gave you a budget of up to $150, and asked for a recommendation for a folding companion-for-life with some fidgety features that didn't either increase the risk of accidental damage to my pocket or hand OR come off as too safety-minded which companies and models would top your short list for a folding knife with either a drop point, sheepsfoot, or wharncliffe shaped blade?
2. For me, hand sweat is sometimes a fear and I am downright phobic about having a slippery handle. Coolness is far secondary to safety of my hand, my project, and the surrounding area (whether it be living tissue or inatimate object). Micarta and G-10 seem only slightly better than bare metal casing, but wood has always seemed more accomodating to grip security (especially when moisture may appear). Call me Pinocchio but this real boy would need Gepetto's earnest assurance that a wood lover will be just as secure with non-wood scales. And if, after letting your conscience be your guide, you feel I should release my death grip on a natural sweat-absorbing natural wood, which man made material would you recommend?
Please consider my preference--and your guidance--from question #2 when answering question #1.

Most serious question. You only gey to pick one knife for a midwestern outdoorsman. The knife would be expected to deal with river fishing adventures, cleaning fish, field dressing wild game and light bush crafting. Acceptable answers could either include a 'regular' knife or a multi tool

If you’re going through a French fry forest you’d probably want something from the Spyderco Salt series with an LC200N blade. All that sodium will rust out other blade steels.

I got a Case Medium Stockman and it had the jankiest grinds. Heavy recurve on every blade and looked like it was done in someone's garage. I asked the case reddit forum and it's pretty much a crapshoot so you might want to buy in person.
Case knives are not known for coming with clean sharp edges. They traditionally rough sharpen usually leaving a burr on the edge, as they assume you are going to put the type of edge on it that you want. Their steel isn't known for edge retention so if you use one often you will have to routinely sharpen it. The newer knives don't seem to have as good of QC as they once did also. Most people that buy them these days don't actually purchase them to use, but for collection purposes. If you want a nicer one I recommend purchasing one that was made before the mid 1990's

For the woodworking marking.. how about the Spyderco Delica k390 sheepfoot? Got mine on a great KC sale
Measure once, cut twice? A marking knife should really only have a single-sided bevel so the flat side can rest against your ruler, square, etc. Nothing wrong with these recommendations for "rough" carpentry, but if you're using a knife to be more precise than a pencil... well I don't imagine you would mark joinery lines with a Penguin.

Now that the patent on the axis /crossbar lock has expired, do you know if Spyderco has any plans to use the crossbar lock on any of their knives? I think a native 5 with a crossbar lock would be fantastic.
None of those knives on the table can even compare with that Casstrom Lars Falt folding knife.. that is the only one knife best for whittling wood.. period!!!
Hey dca. I recently found out that I'm going to be a dad and want to get a knife to celebrate becoming a dad. I want something that will stand the test of time. Something that is good for edc for an adult but also for a first knife to pass down. I want it to lock, a blade between 2"1/2 to 3 inches under $150 with a stainless steel blade that's easy to maintain but will hold a decent edge. Thanks

My girlfriend and i are planning to go on a Bushcraft/Trecking Trip in Sweden. On this occasion i want to buy a new fixed blade. It should be full tang, stainless and with a blade length max 12cm (~4,7 inch) due to local regulations. Also i would like to be able to do light batoning, carving and meal prep - a jack of all traits around camp. Right now im looking at Joker knives and some of their full flat grind variants, because my price point would be ideal under 100$ but slightly above is okay. I would prefer a wooden handle, thats why the new Victorinox is right now not in my top 3. Also i do love droppoints.
Do you have any suggestions for an ideal knife on such a Trip?

DCA, I need help. Looking for a Gentleman-ish knife to go with my new suit. Looking for shape like the CEO or CIVIVI Chronic or Savant, dark wood like I see on some Cuibourtia handles or just a dark brown with a stone wash blade and accents or brass accents. I recently bought a nephew his first pocketknife, and now as other nephews reach an appropriate age I have been bestowed the honor of purchasing the first pocketknife for two more pre-teen nephews. Can you please make a recommendation? Budget: $45 roughly. The boys are big and can handle my adult-sized knives well enough, so anything average-sized would be fine for them. The lock is the thing: both boys moms don’t want them to have any lock that would require their fingers to enter the blade path, so no liner or frame locks. Also, neither have an interest in a multitool, so I have to rule out the SAK or Leatherman that I would’ve otherwise leaned toward. Any suggestions? Thanks!

I work in University owned Veterinary Hospital. What would your recommendation be for an inconspicuous knife that could be easily carried in the pocket of scrubs? The blade will be mostly used for opening packages and breaking down cardboard. Would like to stay in a budget under $100. Thanks!

What knife would a woodchuck carry to protect itself while chucking wood?
Hey DCA, I'm looking a good knife to keep in my cars glove box. Right now I'm using the Mantis Pry Knife. Because of its glass breaker, serrations, and blade shape. I'm trying to keep the knife on the smaller side so it doesn't take up too much room in my glove box. I was wondering if there was any other alternatives or more premium options. Thank you.

Most serious question: hello good David and fair Thomas. Garfield, the cat, is famously (and woefully) addicted to lasagna. He believes kittens and savages cut the Italian masterpiece with the end of a serving spatula. Squashing the casserole in the process. Now 45 years of age, Garfield demands a more refined method for making lasagna slices. Could you recommend a knife for a middle aged cat to portion out a properly rested, delectable lasagna? Spare no expense!

I bought the victorinox rambler on your recommendation david, i love the little thing and it has helped me out.
But lately i have thought to myself, "i wish there was a bigger version".
So i am thinking about buying the tinker (standard version), but i don't like the little pen blade, wish it were scissors instead.
The closest i have found is the pioneer x, can you help me find other options?
It does not have to be victorinox, but it would be great if it were the same setup as the tinker, tool implement placement and all, but no corkscrew please... Hate that tool.

My daughter is entering high school and I need a device suitable for ‘motivating’ teen male suitors yet somewhat budget and storage friendly, so the Corpse Splitter is a bit much. Also, on the terror scale, a Corpse Splitter is just short of Leatherface, we’re looking for something in the Crocadile Dundee..”now, that’s a knife” range that could do some solid camp duty along with its mild intimidation tasks. I have a very serious question. If you were running for President and were about to give a major rally speech and at the podium you noticed that the plastic pack of bottled water was not yet opened.
