She was blessed to have a husband supporting her so that she could start her business making NO money in the beginning for quite a while. Blessed again that she had a brother who could help her navigate the business side of the blow out business. I am happy for her great success and hope she does wonderful things in the world with her fortune.
This is such a great interview. I am 42 and got divorced last year after a 13 year marriage. I was helping him build up his career and lost myself. Now I’m feeling like I’m in my 20’s all over again wondering what it is I can do.
Do what you LOVE! ❤
I love how honest she is about why she divorced her first husband. Specifically the sex part because you know this is the breakdown of a lot of couples but no one says anything.
If you think you don't need a year between a marriage and your next relationship, you probably need two years at least!
I so agree with this - until you prioritize a relationship with yourself - without healing time, you just transfer baggage forward to the next relationship until its a suitcase whose weight breaks your soul. Great advice.
2 years, best advice I got after my divorce
💯
I agree. For me, it took much, much longer, but so worth it. Mel is right. She has her career AND her kids. I think sometimes we're looking for someone to "complete" us. That's BS. We ARE complete. But you have to fly solo for a while to really get that. Also, the neurochemicals involved in sex literally blind us (emotionally) to our partner's faults during about the first 6 months of a relationship. Those neurochemicals also bind us to the partner, not just emotionally, but in a real physical way. That's why we physically yearn for them when we're apart.
EXCELLENT DATING ADVICE TO ALLIE!!!! Mel you are SPOT ON!! I hope Alli just goes on her own. She comes across so strong in business but she can't be alone.. without a guy. Why? I so appreciate that she was willing to share so openly and I so appreciate that you were so honest with her about your suggesting she be alone for a year+. And you stuck to your guns. She's a strong woman.. but it feels like there's a part of her that thinks she can't "do it alone". Maybe she's young... in my late 50s and I've never been married and while I'd LIKE to be with a man.. it's not #1 priority. Thanks for keeping it REAL Mel!!
I always feel happy that I love my own company and I don't have the desire to date seriously right now. I'm 34, I have been in a 9 and 10 year relationship. It isn't until the projection of other people (mainly other women) tell me how I am living my life in the wrong way that I start to feel bad about it. I was happy and inspired reading your comment

Omg am I the first ? Hello from Belgium! I'm 54 and have been thinking of doing a similar podcast to yours Mel but in French for a European audience.
I have no experience and I'm not "young and vibrant" ...but I'm "more experienced and...vibrant "... I'm not narcissistic and not entirely sure of myself but I think this is what I want to do...
Now I've got to STOP making excuses. ..
OK now to listen to this girl. Thank you. ❤
Oops nope I was 3rd. 😂 Oh well.
Do it!!!! 🕺✨
Fantastic! 5, 4, 3, 2, 1...And do it!
Omg! You have no life! 😂
Mel might not answer but let me tell you...go for it!!! You have experience that someone else could need, what you have to say might be the words someone else needed at that moment in their life, so go for it!! It's better to say I tried and it didn't work out than to never try and live with regret 😊❤🙏🏼 I wish you much success
I have lived an absolute parallel life as Ally. I want her to know that I met my complete soulmate on round 3 and we’ve been married 20 yrs, built an amazing business together and she will also.
I share her love of love and diving into everything too fast head first
I love you Mel! I listen to everything you do and send it to my girls and friends
You are a true treasure
“Hope you marry well…” that’s a whole conversation they flew by…
You nailed it Mel! People are winning professionally but losing in their personal life & marriages. Look at our divorce rate. The #1 problem is a failed relationship with ourselves. We need time to analyze & process to truly fix this before dating again & getting into another relationship so quickly.
No one goes into a marriage thinking it will end in divorce. If it happens heck one has to move on
I will save this interview as my favourite list. Because it’s not only successful story but also I really enjoy listening honest conversations.Thank you Mel, Allie! I am also a hairstylist from Japan and moved to Canada 30 years ago and I’ve been through so many challenges through work and life. But all of those challenges have become valuable life lessons. I will keep working till I die as a hairstylist because I always love seeing my clients leave with smile
YES! LOVE her take on "imposter" syndrome. GREAT - imposter syndrome means that you're doing something you haven't done before. Great interview!
Lol, yeah... which is the exact opposite of what "imposter syndrome" actually means, lol! 😉
As someone going through a divorce and also losing myself in the marriage this is the exact video I had to come across today. I’ve already watched three time and plan to listen to every day. Thank you Mel and Allie
As a (former) hairstylist myself, I enjoyed this episode.
I had similar thoughts back in 1995 but didn’t do anything about it. Good for you Allie! I am doing other things now, still being creative, and I LOVE it! I get in flow and the dog whines for his dinner and my husband is, well, ya know…politely ignored, LOL.
Women entrepreneurs ROCK!!! 🚀
How true that our lives mirror our parents to some degree per each person.
I feel that this segment was very scattered and not pithy enough, too many important steps left out : i.e. how did she get the seed capital, what precipitated the move to CA, how did the business expand, etc. I now realize that her new book is being released imminently. I hope that it is a little more revelatory. I also hope that she is able to live in her personal truth.
It's very hard tracking her. She's talking too fast and too scattered. Trying to catch these nuggets, but whew! Mel tried to slow her down and real her in.
Your excitement, enthusiasm, passion for what you are doing.... or going to do.... will EXCITE & IGNITE the people around you to join you - support you - do business with you! GREAT show MEL & ALI 🤩
Mind officially blown! This story is pure inspiration. To think a stay-at-home mom with no traditional 'experience' built a $255M empire-talk about turning challenges into triumphs! The messy truth and real talk about blowouts and divorces make it all the more relatable.
I loved this interview!!! I am a 51 single ( America mom, lol) of three doing nails part time in a Vietnamese nail salon. Alli's story was extremely inspiring. Makes me wonder how I can start something unique in the nail industry? A one income household today is not sustainable w three children.
Try a mobile nail salon. Any at home service. I know she went from mobile to a brick n mortar but, there could be a market for ppl that want that at home for a reasonable price.
@@ec9833 Yes, I've actually thought of that and am trying to figure out a way to do that with where I'm at in life. Thank you so much!
Inspiring and fun interview. Mel’s advice to wait a year before dating was spot on and had me cracking up with her delivery. Ali, thank you for sharing your successful business story.
“It’s easy to show up for the wins…” oh so true. This interview was fire. More of this please, and thank you for your raw insight. Best of luck to you, Alli! You’re a beautiful shining light and may you continue to be so. ❤
OMG , Mel....you had me when you told her "don't date nobody.....". I felt tears on my face. How "fragile" we, women are!!! She has children, great business, She Is beautiful and young, intelligent, amazing and so vulnerabile at the same time. No judge on her. I Just realized that we need inner work to heal ourselves. Thankyou One thousand times Mel ❤
Yes, I can relate to rushing things in general. Key word is rush/rushing. Let's take it slow and roll with the flow.
60, loved Allie; learned, took solace and inspiration from this podcast! Dont complain it wasnt a 'polished' delivery - that's what made it an honest and beneficial conversation. An old hairdresser here, had a similar 23 year marriage too lol. So many similarities.
Allie I wholeheartedly advise you take on board Mels (not) dating advice. Take a breather. Well done, enjoyed it all ❤
Love the "tough girl love" piece towards the 45minute mark
I loveeee this blow dry bar. They also have stylists that can manage textured hair. So as a black woman, I love the experience when I’m there with my cute glass of champagne 🥂
Say what now? They do textured hair?! Years ago they didn’t.
This had me in tears especially when she was talking about her second divorce . I’ve actually been there so I felt it again now. You’re amazing Mel though a bit harsh sometimes but maybe that’s what people need and that’s why we love you 😊❤
More of this kind of content please!!!! Thank you both for opening up and talking about the good, bad and the ugly!! ❤
Listening to this interview and i had so many ideas for my husband business. I want say this woman is bold, brave and so energetic/passionate... sure she was successful
Mel is 100% right- she can't be alone
I just love you Mel! You bring such a realistic, transparent, inspiration to many lives❤❤❤ sending love
So encouraging and empowering!!!!! Wow
This is such an excellent and relatable interview. I love everything about this woman. Although, I hide my hair in a tight bun most days, so I'm probably not her client, but I love everything about it. Well done, Sister
Mel you are such a great person with such a big heart. I don’t know many people who do podcasts for free and this just shows so much of who you are. Bless you 🙏🏻
Thank you both for an awesome, thought provoking podcast!
It's a very interesting interview and Mel you gave her great advices. With that said, we all know that the person on the other end needs to be ready to hear it.
Hey 👋 a 4 year stay at home mom WANTING to find a passion to make income and still be 100% there for my young children. I'm tuning in. thank you
Mel - I have been a listener for years & have purchased all of your books. This by far has been my favorite interview. I felt like I was right there with you guys chatting about girl stuff. I would love more content like this!!!
Thanks Mel! Really enjoyed this interview. Very inspirational! Now I need to read Alli's book to hear everything.
This was a fun podcast to listen to tonight. I literally took a pile of paperwork from my car accident, and turned it into a stack of labeled file folders. The car accident was a year ago, and I seriously need to get it closed so I can get a final check and buy a new car. 🤣
Awesome convo! Great tips! Amazing story!!! Be the partner to yourself! Do some shadow work! Childhood wounds are surfacing. I see childhood abandonment wounds here. Heal that and the right partner WILL COME into your life❤
Thank you so much Mel I loved this interview ! Thank you Allie , I appreciate what you shared today. Passion? I need to find mine again. I’m 50 divorced finding myself again is hard work.
I hated the bait and did sit there for a service that cost me more than I planned to spend, I was upset about it and noted to never return to that business. Very smart to focus on this one thing in your plan.
This was an awesome episode!!! Mel, you cracked me up!!!!
AMAZING guest, wonderful interview thankyou ❤
This had me in tears, laughing and encouraged! Love this episode, Mel! ❤ Totally agree with 2 years! There are cycles to grieving, and we must know ourselves. If you dont care about hurting yourself at least think about the people who get hurt as a result of not taking the time to heal and learn who you are.
THIS! 💯 At least think of the others it hurts.
@@kelliesmith4068 Right! Don't be selfish. There's levels to healing. We may not all arrive 100 percent, but do the work.
Oh my gosh, I love your friendship. That's true friendship right there. Advice...given with love. Agree or don't agree with each other but still advise with love and greater good. You were meant to stumble upon each other.
Awesome interview.... First and foremost she is an amazing business person and her personal story is very true to many.. Great advice
Good morning, thank you for sharing, the good, bad, ugly & the Blessing. We need more information like this. So inspiring & eye opening not just to open your own business, also life trials & hardships. How we can all have a Bless life. Stay Bless & safe 🙏🤗
What a beautiful person she is. Please tell her about doing some IFS therapy, you nailed it about her pushing back. She could really figure this out with the right professional. Good for you for supporting her the way you did, Mel!
Love you Mel. The approach with Allie was a little harsh tho' I must say. A brilliant woman with obviously a brilliant head for business and like many of us struggles with personal relationships. I think she could have used more of you kindness & encouragement instead of reprimands & unwarranted advice while being put on the spot. Hopefully this won't permanently affect your relationship but a repair might be in order, and an apology. Not to us necessarily. ❤
Mel thank you stepping outside the podcaster role to being being a girlfriend. We got to be there for each and be honest when we see someone repeat a bad pattern.
This is such an amazing podcast.
Really like this episode! Now that I want to create my own business this type of podcasts give me so much confidence !
Women need to hear this more often !especially moms as we tend to loose our confidence in the process of motherhood!
My favorite line… “Get a vibrator and get your shit together.“ We need T-shirts ladies… Best advice ever. I have been single for two years now and I know who I am, I know what I want, and I fucking love myself. Highly recommend it… Thanks Mel! 🥰❤️🔥
It’s because the blow out is like the birds when they’re giving the bonding time to each other it’s special and it also makes stuff in the neural network develop plastic gives hormone like chemical releases And your hair it’s got a lot of sensitivity inside like birds with feathers so are used to notice as well when I went to go get my hair done I used to always go in there very tense and leave actually like I’m falling asleep because I got so relaxed in my hair being done
Great video. Would love a follow-up wherein Mel and Alli do a QA with audience questions.
My question to you Mel is what was the advice that you gave her? That would be a real “nugget “ for many of us in the same situation she was and is when she sent that text. ❤ and thank you for what you do Mel and how you show up. ❤️❤️
Damn... Mel delivered some raw and solid dating advice...
This was great.
46:16 love how real you both are!
This woman is brilliant and I think it's partly because she's so honest and true to herself
Thank you for this and thank you Ali for being vulnerable. I see a lot of people being judgmental on the internet even though they too make mistakes in their life so it’s quite hypocritical for you guys to judge this incredible woman who has achieved far more than us. I loved Ali, she’s very real and I hope she finds the love that lasts her lifetime and I hope I can build a business empire like her so I can thrive and support my beloved family.
Love you Mel!!
I love this! I'd love to hear more female entrepreneur interviews ❤
I had no idea blow drying was such a big thing. Mind you I've had a pixie cut for 30 years...
I used to get my hair blown out at Drybar in Buckhead (Atlanta) back in 2014 - 2017. It was next door to Flywheel, the former cycling and barre studio. Those were the days.
Mel is right! Wait a year
Alle- I agree, go at the pace is good for you. However, a rock nugget to keep in your pocket, why a lotta people say a year not arbitrarily. Relationships& those patterns, it’s like an addiction. You’re almost scared of the void of independence because emotionally you’ve had someone there. As someone who has struggled with that in the past, people aren’t blowing smoke at you. They really aren’t. 12mo is a good gauge point. Sure, could be shorter. Often though, for healing, it’s a little longer. It’s not the time restraint or restrictions that are the defining factor of how long it takes. It’s the emotional growth rate that dictates. Either way- You’re a badass& I can’t wait to consume the book. Probs in an audio form.
Mel ...an observation Please let the speaker finish its narration, especially the narration that connects the listerners to the story, before you sum it up .
God, I need to watch this!
It sounds odd when she calls a blow dry a 'blow out' 🙂 I hadn't heard it called that before... in the UK this is when your tyre explodes on the motorway 😏
Mel, thank you for asking her why she had to be in a relationship! It may well be that she should take a break from dating for at least a year.
I love you mel!!
Ali should have been more open that her brother had been the VP at Yahoo Finances and helped secure her $250k+ to open her first Brentwood, Cali blowout bar, which including an architect to create the aesthetic that would be branded to all dry bars. As they say team work makes the dream work, but when you don’t have the privilege to finance a startup with that type of financial backing. I heard Ali speak live at FounderMade in NYC in 2018 which is how I know. I wish I had her brother! ☺️
Love you Mel! Where did you get your necklace and charms?
Thank you for this interview. Very enlightening.
Do you have any suggestions for a new podcaster, who is totally oblivious to how to stay one? I would love to do a similar podcast where I interview people but my subject for my podcast will be quite different.
While I agree with the advice you gave Alli about taking some time for herself before getting back out into the dating scene, I have to wonder if you would give the same advice to a man in a similar situation.
Big Ups to Alli!!!🙌🙌👏👏👏👋🖐High5!
I’ve been wanting to try Drybar in Gilbert AZ. I guess I assumed they didn’t wash just styled.
Take a year off from dating and seek God. It’s what I did after my divorce. It paid off because God sent my man of God to me and we’ve been happily married 10years this January 2024 ❤🙏🏽
Dear Allie, please consider loving Allie before you go find another man. Heal that little girl Allie, Mel is right. You need more than a year. We ALL like to have a partner.. duh. But you will NEVER get the right partner if you fail to love yourself and heal your soul from any past hurts. Your young, please please don't show your children how to be bad at many relationships, show them that the most important relationship is the one with yourself. Peace to you. All my best to you. ❤️
She loves LOVE, nothing wrong with that, like in life keep looking keep trying until u get it right, better than being bitter and resentful.
Unpopular opinion, but I just felt Mel didn't need to go so hard about her personal life. The "let them" theory should have been pulled into practise here. If she asks for advice cool, but she didn't in that moment so it should have been left alone. I wish I heard more about her business and less "tough love" her about her dating choices
40 bucks with the gas at $6+ a gallon, in the LA traffic, wouldnt be worth it.
As I like to remind myself on a regular basis (and others as well, LOL)... the definition of insanity is doing the same thing and expecting a different result! 💥
* Simple proverb:
If you have the guts to ask for advice, have the guts to take it sometime! 😉
Truly inspirational story. However, what the dickens is a "blow out"? I've had a blow out in a tyre, but hairdressing? I even went to the website, and still a little confused. Is this a hairdressing business? I know blow drying is part of the service, but this is where the confusion comes in. Anytime someone goes to a hairdresser here in New Zealand, everything is priced beforehand and blow drying is part of it. Hair stylists also do the whole thing as far as I know.
Also, the website mentions "gratuities" I assume that is tipping. Very different from here and other countries where tipping isn't a culture. To me this would defeat the "exact price" model. However obviously it works in the USA, but I can't see how tipping sits along the guaranteed price. What about just adding a percentage to the listed price and skip the tipping? It's always amazed me that the USA has the tipping culture. Surely it doesn't promote a fabulous customer service relationship. How does this work? Is tipping a choice in your business?
At the end of the day. although I am a thoroughly confused Kiwi, the business obviously works exceptionally well. Congratulations to Alli for her passion and enthusiasm. Amazing story of breaking through the business barrier.
Still a tad wee bit confused though!
Cheers Pete
Mel’s hilarious - “Personally I don’t give a shit about blow outs” 😂
We all crave intimacy with a human, I don't think it matters our bank account size and I also do not believe a toy, friends, or family can replace touch, and bond between lovers.
Success in the great dry bar story. Yes!
Relationship no...
If i could warn the next guy to heed caution I would. We could all learn from mistakes but if you are ready to move on this fast for the penetrating experience Stop There! You are dealing with the emotional heart and mind. Line up your head and heart with God and make longterm goals. Slowdown, abstain from momentary sexual gratification and spare the next men from getting tangled in your web of confusion. Be responsible and do your personal growth and soul searching first. .
I'm 65 and listening to you makes me nervous, don't project your invisible scars on innocence. There are red flags waving all around you. Listen to Mel, you need some self love and self respect and self balance first. If you don't spend time with yourself my next question is, are you a narcissist? Narcisists do not do therapy and if they do they fake it. How are your children doing? Do they have a Mom?
Mel, she’s pushing back because she’s a hopeless romantic! I know because I am one. you just want to believe in love, and you never know when you might find “the one.” But I think it’s important to have discernment and wisdom and self-healing, FOR SURE.
❤❤❤❤
Mel let her talk, please!
❤️🥰 Love 🎉 Love 🎆🎉❤️
I like the ideas of no mirrors that’s great (one reason I don’t go to hairdressers !) but having hair done in a ‘party ‘ atmosphere is a big no no for me
Might be my age ! Need serenity
