    In the late 80's I went to a guitar clinic with Jason and Marty. I think there were maybe 40-50 people there. I couldn't believe more people didn't show up to see them. Later that night saw Cacophony live with the same amount of people. People just didn't get their genius.

      That would of been epic to witness them 2 guitar virtuosos. It always amazed me how one could just start playing, noodling around and the other comes into improvise and they harmonize together yet playing different things that inter-weave in and out of eachother and it just fit perfectly together! I remember the 1st time hearing "The Ninja" & "Concerto" both intros are soo memorably huge sounding with an orchestral feel Cacophony is still underrated to me

    Hey Ben, I'm glad someone finally pointed out that Marty uses Gypsy picking technique. The reasoning behind this picking style (the wrist angle, always downstroke a string change) is to get the most volume out of an acoustic guitar. This music predates electric guitars, so it was pretty necessary for the guitarists to utilize this technique if they wanted to be heard when taking a solo live!

    • @BenEller
      @BenEller  4 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Nailed it!!! It’s all about the volume!

    • @altonlathrop7925
      @altonlathrop7925 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I also love that Ben pointed this connection out. The Gypsy picking technique is a very powerful tool when playing acoustic - especially in an ensemble when taking a solo. I started playing as a teen metalhead and Marty was (and still is) my favorite player in the genre, because he was always doing such different things - exotic and very lyrical phrases - not just running up and down scales.
      After 25 years of playing metal, I discovered Gypsy Jazz, and that's what I mostly play these days. Committing to the Gypsy picking technique has made me lost some of my electric shredding chops, but I'm fine with that. I also appreciate that Ben points out the melodic link to Gypsy Jazz - to this day, when I am in a jam session and "Minor Swing" by Django Reinhardt comes up, I'll loosely quote Marty's Am6 arpeggio idea from "Symphony of Destruction". It works well in the tune and all of the other players have no idea where it came from!

    • @jonlate4581
      @jonlate4581 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Someone should point it out to Marty. The funny thing is, when asked about it, Marty has said it's just the way he holds the pick. There was never any certain approach he was going for. Watch some of his lessons, he's far less technical than people think. His approach to playing is pretty simple but brilliant.

    • @ThorsShadow
      @ThorsShadow 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jonlate4581 This exactly. Marty always said in interviews and still says to this day, that this is just the way he holds the pick. In fact, he holds the pick this way when playing electric guitar and he always has, even before Holy Wars. The Gypsy technique thing is just a coincidence. Although an awesome one. :D

    Hey Ben. Awesome lesson. It’s been a long while a since I’ve heard this one. I noticed that certain elements of it are eerily familiar to some Chopin I recently transcribed to the guitar, i.e. Sandwiched tonic between the flat 2nd and raised 7th. IMHO The highest level of creativity lies in the ability to mix and overlap different modal colors to the point of chromaticism without sounding like a chromatic exercise. Oh and that Martin is badass man! I have the Mexican Martin 12 String. It’s pretty good too.

He talks about a lot of the things you mention like the chromaticism that come from out of nowhere, the double downpicking thing, his thoughts on scales and ornamentation, all that good stuff. Tons of food for guitar thought.

    Two small corrections:
    - at 7:10 you play the D on the B string (3th fret) but Marty plays it on the G string (7th fret).
    - the chord at the end isn't actually an E but an E5 (same except you omit the G#, by either fretting 4 on the G or muting the string), so a dyad in fact.

    Damn, your breakdowns are way more betterlier than otherses. Also, 💚 the Martin. While you're at it, any chance we might get a breakdown of the intro to Crazy On You (Heart)? Imo, that shit is insane. Thanks again for the learning experience Uncle Ben.

    Ben, please do an episode on Steal Away The Night from the Tribute album (live version). Another great song with a ton of bad tabs out there. Solo is also epic and is a great showcase of Randy Rhoads style. Song is also full of fills that blow me away!

    Thank you for this. This seemed an impossible riff for me as a young guitar player back in the day. Maybe today with your help, we will get there...

    One acoustic riff that always stuck in the back or my mind is Vinnie Moore's 'Never Been to Barcelona'
