Why would you blow coal on a worse version of a tech tree ship?
Obviously because Z-44 has Hydro-… wait, what? It doesn’t have hydro? It’s a damn German ship! Why doesn’t it have hydro? I don’t even care about the bloody thing! I’m just tilted because I’ve been playing around it AS IF IT HAD HYDRO!
Ty. I have seen some pretty positive reviews of this ship (heavily reliant on the AP shells), but they never made sense to me looking at the numbers. Knowing that that is not always the whole story, I have kept it on the "maybe" list. Now I can kill it off. Appreciated.
Fletcher is better than Z-44 in everyway that counts
one thing you have to remember with PQ is if a ship doesn't do 200k damage with its guns he doesn't like it. he is very much all about gun damage and not the different type of rolls of various ships.

The ship is a DD killer, amazing gun arcs, fast torps, good ballistics and radar. Absolutely struggles against BBs and cruisers. You only have one rack of torps, with very low damage.
@@devonellis2520 I agree, BBs arent as big of a problem if you engage them while their attention is focused on another target but cruisers should be approached with caution. The torps are more of an area denial tool however, they do have decent range and will get the occasional lol hit here and there.
I got that ship in August mystery drop. Would be nice to see PQ play it
In the past, competitive destroyers were Cossack, Loyang, Kidd, Cossack, Le Terrible, and Cossack. Siliwangi as rare dark horse.
I'd love to see Orkan in Clan Battles, but I don't expect it to be popular even among the not very many players who have it.

One of the few coal ships I don't have, no hurry to get it because every streamer complains about it. The only advantage I see is the torp range. I'd like to see a secondary build Kii.
Z-44 is the Fletcher we have at home. It wants to be a torp focused hybrid, but it sucks at it so hard
It cant gunfight, the torps are mid af, its way to big and clumsy, has next to 0 AA, and to top it all off, it has exactly 0 special gimmicks

@@Pandemic1313Z-44 has some of the best torps spreads at the tier. The torps are just comfortable and quick reload and long range, make it easy to land hits.
Not recommending anyone gets the ship, because it's very meh as a whole. But the torps are perhaps the easiest to use at the tier.

I could go into the numbers explaining exactly why, but I dont want to bore you. Suffice it to say, Fletcher is just better than Z-44 in every way that counts, and Fletcher is in the tech tree for free
Upfront: Number 1 is Benham and Benham is just over the top nuts so i will not compare it.
Just to make this clear about "middle of the pac" torpedo capabilities: (11:24) The torpedo DPM is 96k and that makes it 14th of all Tier 9 Destroyers. Fletcher on 7th has only 11k more at 107k. So between 7th and 15th dpm are pretty close.
What about range? Z has 12km - Fletcher sits at 10.5km. The only Destroyers that with a higher DPM and equal or better range are Black with 13.7km, Orage with equal 12km. Minegumo with 15km and yugumo with 12.
What about reload? Z-44 puts 7.1 Torps every minute. Fletcher? Just 5.7. Black? 6.3. Orage? 4.5. Minegumo 4.8 and Yugumo only 4.2. The only ships with more torps send are Mogador with 7.8 at only 8km range. Tashkent at 7.8 with also 8km range. That's it. Basically there is no ship putting out more torps with the same or better DPM.
But thats not all. Lets see how sneaky the torps are.
Reaction time: On a Z-44 torpedo you get 7.6s reaction time once you see it. The only better ships here are: Tashkent (7.4), Minegumo with its 6km torps (7.3) and Udaloi (7.4). That's it again. To be fair: Black is close with 7.8 and maybe fletcher with 7.9, Orage then at 8.0 and yugumo only at 9.4.
PQ calls Jäger the better torp boat. It sits at 63k DPM. Thats 1/3 of Z-44s DPM off. With the same range, only half the flood chance and also giving the enemy more time to avoid. Jäger only has faster reload and faster torps. But the enemy has more reaction time (7.8s) compared to the Z-44s torps (7.6s)
Now if you take all this into account you will not find a better torpedo destroyer (benham excluded) on Tier 9. Some may have higher dpm but there is none with faster reload (i don't count mogador and tash since 8km is too short for real torpedo gameplay), there is only udaloi or minegumo with it's 6km torps and we dont compare 12km to 6km torps or 10km from udaloi. Add most HP for comparing DDs (Mogador, Paolo and Tash with more). Good concealment on level with fletcher.
On on top you get horrible guns. Yugumo has better guns. They are bad. Real bad. If you try to Gunboat on the Z-44 thats like playing Tashkent as Torp boat. Or taking range consumable on Buffalo. Things you should just not do.
But that is not the point. The point is if you say Z-44 is "in the middle of the pac" with its torpedos then you just didnt understand and fully realize what those torpedos can do and are doing. Beside of benham there is no better torpedo destroyer on tier 9.
And by the way there are not even a lot of Tier 10 destroyers that are better on torpedos. But thats a different story.

Just looking at the raw torpedo stats isn't that useful if you want to compare a Jäger to a Z44. Lets start with the torps, which as you pointed out look preferable on paper: Having a much better alpha at a comparable reaction time is better in most cases, IF the other DD does launch them way the Z44 does - in 2 racks with 10 torps total. But Jäger is totally different, because it has 4 racks with 12 torps total, with the option for a super narrow spread. That gives so much flexibility over two racks! Some examples: You can torp every possible direction of an incoming ship, super useful if you have to fight a closing DD. Or if you got the perfect broadside on a BB, you can white-line torp him with 3 racks and withhold the last to stack nasty perma floodings. You can also really punish bow-in ships due to the tight super tied spread or attack two ships on both your sides with 6 torps each. So even though the alpha and DPM might be worse, the effective damage is much higher if you take advantage of all the flexibility. And while the average reaction time might be comparable (or even slightly favorable for Z44), that's not the whole picture neither: Jäger gets 86 knot torps while Z44 has slow 64 knots base. The big difference is: Z44 torps are trash if the ship is sailing away and is easily dodgeable with hydro. Jäger torps on the other hand are so fast that hydro often does not cut it and even DDs that are sailing away from you often get hit, an insane advantage. Furthermore you also have better torp angles, which allow you to use your mobility much more effectively. Speaking of which: Jäger is not only much much stealthier, it also is slightly quicker and turns much better. Combined it means that it can very easily vision-trap a Z44 (or any DD without long range hydro or radar, besides Japanese DDs with similar detection). Pushing into a pre-kited Jäger by yourself will just mean that you'll be perma-spotted, shot at by its teammates while the Jäger also throws 86+ knots torps your way. Simply put: The Jäger often determines the engagement, while the Z44 can just react to it - another night and day difference. Combining all these factors paints a pretty clear picture of how difficult and annoying the Jäger is, especially compared to the Z44. The Jäger is also much better at surviving because it has a tiny hull and a heal. And we have not even talked about the access to the European special commander, which boosts the Jäger so, so much (-5% torp reload per 8 torp hits on a DD that can easily rank up 20+ hits on a good game AND enhanced Adrenaline Rush, allowing to intentionally not use your heal, buffing the torp reload even further). As a result a Jäger with that setup will often run around the second half of a game with a 40 second torp reload, getting stronger and stronger while the ships facing it are getting weaker (more spread out, less hydro, used DCPs, low health, etc). That's also a big psychological effect because its pretty much a constant stream of sheer undodgeable torps, slowly bleeding you to death from a DD that is very very difficult to dig out. And the player feedback speaks volume on that if you compare how they hate dealing with a Jäger vs. how unfaced most of them are against a Z44. The server statistics of course also show a much better performance on Jäger: Average damage: 33.2k vs 47.3k, winrate: 51,9% vs 47,1% in the last patch. If you enjoy the Z44: Great! But calling it the best torpedo dd on T9? That's a tough sale my man..
i have z-44 and is one of my most played ship, is not a good ship but is a good enough ship on all the aspect except gun. now with the jager avalable i dont think there is a reason to take z44 since both have similar stats but jager gets better conceal. I've had a lot of enemy dd get surprised by an early salvo of torps in the cap since the 1minute cooldown and 12km range allow you to send a wave of torp while going to the cap and have almost a secon one when you contest. Personally as a buff i'd like to have a buff to torp cooldown o dmg since 13k is quite low.
Just play fletcher it has better gun angles

Fr german ships are some of the worst ship in every tier. You got Gneisenau and Z31 at T7, T8 got the Graf Zeppelin and Hipper, T9 got this ship and FDG, and almost all T10 german ships are just meh save Schlieffen and Z42

Best thing you could have gotten out of this ship tbh. Karl is a fun ship, and good as well
Got z-44 for free as well, but kept it. Guns are weak but usable 'cause comfortable shell arcs & bearable turret traverse vs. Yugumo.
Torps & conceal comfortable, specced lütjens with swift & silent to go faster
I have all of the current coal DDs and PQ is right about the Z-44. The nicest thing about it is that quick torp reload in a full torp build. It´s not a bad ship per say, but it´s not worth getting it as one of your first coal DDs, get it last unless you really, really need a German captain trainer.

I don't understand how the dispersion is so bad. On paper it's basically the same as most other T9 DD's.
You don't take dispersion mod. Bad arcs also makes dispersion look worse.

The single gun turrets look very silly at tier 9.
Somehow outgunned by Yūgumo by 30k HE dpm (Yes, that torpedo boat in the line of which everyone insults the guns of) that also has 12km torps that have far superior damage, a torpedo reload booster, far better concealment, more maneuverable and is 100% free to get, plus you get to grind for the best ship in the game, Shimakaze

Traded the one I got in a crate in for a Boise last year during one of the Trade In Events. Absolutely no regrets on that choice! If it's ever discontinued I might grab it for coal just to keep from pulling it out of another crate but that's about the extent of my interest in this boat.
I've had this ship for years now. It's always been weak, but the torp reload makes it a fun pick. I never use the guns, they're useless. The ship is too clumsy to expose so if I get caught I use smoke to escape and try to reposition for a better torp shot. If there aren't many options for you and you want a new torp DD, it's not terrible for that role, just don't expect huge point totals.
i got this for my birthday this year and i have to say i do really enjoy it so far. as a spotting and torp dd its not too bad
What's really sad about this ship in my opinion is that this ship really had the potential to be a very strong torpedo German destroyer I mean they've been buffing a lot of older premiums so fingers crossed that they buff this one it would really be nice especially considering the fact that you know German destroyers are already kind of a little power crept being at their one of the oldest lines in game so I would think that this ship is going to be due for a buff here very soon

I recently got this ship for free for guessing 9/10 football things (choose the side with a lower rate on any online betting site, no insight needed). Since I enjoy a little torp boating, I don't mind it at all. Reasonable torp reload and good range, good detect, sometimes some AP shenanigans

The pure idea of getting matched against a Mog, Fletcher, Black, Jutland, ZF6 in this thing is really funny. Everytime i see one, I consider it a Free Real Estate
Currently using Z-44 to help grind up Lütjens. Admittedly not the best DD around, but I’ve got the torp reload down to just over a minute which is OK. Though generally I wasn’t too impressed with the original German DD line.
Strength(and the only strength):fast reloading torps which can hit targets easily
Thanks for the video. Been going back and forth on whether to pick this one up or not. I tend to like the German DD's, but have heard that this one isn't great. I can usually deal with the limitations of German DDs, but the total lack of hydro on this makes it a no go. Having hydro is a staple of German DDs. With nothing else buffed to make up for the loss of hydro, it definitely isn't worth it.
Never got this one on coal.. Received it for free last xmas in a container.. Its still okay to train your maas captain
I think a torp speed buff would help. Or a concealment buff. Probably both. Or TRB

i personally love the Z44 its a super fun ship to play in the sense that its really bad... I love tryingto preform with ships that are tragic to play, but you are completely right this ship IS REALLY BAD!

@@EvoraGT430 Nah, there's some naff CVs in there. Some are a lot more user friendly and consistent while others have crazy high peaks if you can land the strikes, but a lot harder to land said strikes
i got mine set as a torp boat. 65 second torp reload and 67knt speed
She was my second coal ship and I played hunders of games in her. Really enjoyed playing it as a torp DD. Eventually traded her in in a event because coal ships can always be bought back. Thought about gegting her back but as you said, the gun angles are horrible and no hydro hurts a lot.
Possible buffs would be:
Better angles for guns and torps.
Faster/Higher Damage torps (e.g. 67 base and/or 14k damage)
5.5 km hydro or at least the British hydro because 6 km might be to good.
I like my Z-44. I've had some nice games in it.

I feel like all torp botes are useless. Everyone has hydro, every BB released in the last 3 years has cruiser rudder shift, and trying to predict potato movements 45-60 seconds out is impossible.
I have given up on torping people and started torping locations. Where do I want someone NOT to go is where I torp.
@@kena4977 Many years ago, I loved my German dds. Capping, smoking up and hydro where the perfect tools in the beginning of a match. Then came cvs, radar crusers subs. It's No wonder, that the most dds die in the first five minutes of a game. Hydro on a dd was once very powerfull.
minegumo has better HE dpm, better conceal, and much better torps. i don't have a z44 and probably never will.
The Torps are very cool and funny, but the Rest of the Ship is so Bad. Its slow too, Turret traverse everything is bad. It need 3 big Buffs and it could be good. Way better conceal, way more speed and maybe a Hydro 😅
ship buff: 1000% flooding chance on the torps, so that no matter what reduction they have, you always get a flood
