Holy Smoke (and unholy flames, too)!! That was BAD and appeared to be hotter than Hades’ Lava. I am surprised that the aerial ladder did not melt and collapse as well. The companies did a fine job to not lose the whole street and, especially, the white house. However, in my heart and soul, nothing, and no one can compare to the FDNY. Awesome footage, JJ. You are the #1 MAN!

As close as those homes are, they would have to have magnificent tower ladders. They really did a amazing job
Always interesting to see fires like this in older cities. Fire codes for residences like these were slim and none in the early 1900's. Power lines were placed in areas where there were not many other options but to place them like you saw at this fire. The thought at the time was that a lot of people were needing a place to live and power for them as cheaply and as fast as they could get them. Of course it was natural for folks to not think about how close the house next to you was and what will happen if there is a fire. That "always" happen to someone else. The planners and code writers in the last 20 to 25 years correctly tried to "fix' the threat by requiring fire rated construction on the walls of close adjoining structures like these, with the hope that fires would not spread as easily. They later required residential sprinkler systems to lower fire spread, in some jurisdictions. As time has gone on the residential construction industry has lobbied to reduce or even eliminate these requirements in the name of "cost". Your video is a great example of why that is not a smart idea.
Great coverage, John. I used to live down the block from there. These are old wood frame buildings built around the turn of the century. Most are two family dwellings. If you have a radio you can adjust the frequency is 154.145. Keep yourself safe.

I have been delivering building supplies to the house on the right of the fire for a few months now. Where the houses that were burned down is still an open empty lot. Always amazes me the dangers of buildings so close together. As a truck driver we hate going to these areas because of congestion.
I can't get use to how close the house's are in NY and all over here. Ya just don't see that in the midwest. Well you did a really great job covering this fire. And I always enjoy seeing the equipment in the streets. Thanks brother.👍👍👍

Oh yes,,,, in Milwaukee where I live they are that close in older areas of the city. Sometimes one house fire becomes 3 in a hurry.
Some people believe the midwest to be the states from mid wisconsin to the east side of the rockie mts. Denver, Omaha, Kansas City , Oklahoma, Texas are midwest to those of us who live here. Easterners might call it the Great Plains. On my block there is a 32' house on a 35' lot 8 ft from one neighbor and 4 ' on other side. I live in 1885 original farm house in this section. My house 25' square and my lot 150' ft square so my closest neighbor is about 75', then I am on a corner so other two sides houses are across street. But I was born just outside of NYC when my father was a student at NYU and have lived and worked in Boston and DC and Minneapolis/St Paul but I like my space, I can even keep chickens and have a large cement burning pit because my neighbors are so far away. When we get 40 inches of snow it would be nice to have a little shorter sidewalk. The city is 5 times larger than when I was a kid and even though we have zoning and building codes our fire dept is 7x bigger and police 9x bigger. My neighborhood FD response averages 2.5 minutes Police it is about 90 seconds. We have 3 old ladies who rotate police calls for noise, drunks and drugies it is my turn 2 nights a week. The cops drive by at least 1x every 30 minutes at night. When-if you retire I will send JJ an invite to visit.
@@suesmith5746 Sue, you're lucky about your emergency response times. In Milwaukee wi,, my FD is fast but police are at least 1/2 hour to no response at all. Very short staffed here. Milwaukee is #7 on the list of most dangerous cities to live in. Our FD rivals New York on saving structures. They've been extra busy this past month.
Great work by NHRFD. Limited manpower and heavy fire throughout the two frames and they were able to protect the exposure 2 building

Great coverage, as always John!! Just a reminder, never touch the vehicles when walking by because if an aerial (or any other) truck becomes energized by power lines, you then become the path to ground and will be electrocuted. Operators on the trucks are safe as long as they do not touch the ground and truck at the same time. Same goes for a downed line on your personal vehicle. Remain in car until line is de-energized. If you must exit due to fire, jump from vehicle so you are not touching the car and the ground simultaneously.
Aires on jury duty once for a person who became electrified by touching a bucket truck and they were suing the electric company
Love these wooden matchboxes Americans live in. In the middle ages we had them in Europe. Entire city blocks used to go up in flames then. People learned from it and started to build in stone, bricks and concrete. And the overhead power lines is something that we don't have either. Our fireman can get their tower ladders up. You guys deliver the best video footage. Love those stubborn Americans.

Excellent job by N Hudson brothers and sisters and mutual aid companies. Very close exposures all around a couple of fully involved structures. Did I hear you say Montclair, if so that’s quite a distance from there. You also mentioned one of the many buff club canteen units that are like FDNY RAC units. One of the more popular ones is the Box 54 club in Teaneck. Also water supply is surprisingly good since the water is pumped all the way from Haworth. This was one of my area’s in my buffing days.
You didn't mention the Gong Club from Jersey City. They cover Hudson County with their canteen vehicle.

Tower ladder and Ladder towers are two different types of equipment. A ladder tower like in this video has a ladder that you can climb up and down, a tower ladder like FDNY has a bucket but only an escape ladder.
great footage as always, in case ur curious..tower ladder refers to a boom and bucket with no ladder to climb to the bucket (only the emergency one with no side rails, for emergency egress) a ladder tower has the full ladder to the bucket

Dam that's a lot of fire when I was a volunteer fireman we responded to a similar incident. Some guy had been evicted from one of the apartments and he went back and lit the building up. It took 4 other houses with it and displaced several families.

207 was a three-family building, landlord ground floor and basement, two floors above built as apartments. 209, last time I saw it, was for two families, ground and second floor were contained, top floor could be sublet. 207 was my father's childhood home, 209 was bought by his sister and brother-in-law when they were in their 20s or 30s in the early 1970s, neither house was owned by a member of my extended family past the 1990s when my aunt and cousins moved out of 209, and my grandparents in 207 passed.

I can't imagine living in such close quarters to other people for many reasons, this being one of them. My thoughts go out to the families affected by this.

I see two electric services that melted off the two fire buildings. Power is still on for the street evidenced by the Christmas lights still on with the house next door. Stay safe out there John.

Oh yeah, I remember this one buddy. There was some real issues trying to set the power ladder out front. And it was a possibility of arson. Crazy, But real good coverage of the fire and assessment. Jane Street is a narrow dead end street. I don't know if it's still there, but there was a small single engine firehouse near the end of the street. Overhead wires always are a major hindrance for firefighting operations.
Those wires must be the bain of the superheroes lives .very dangerous too I bet x🎉

Hats off to the FDs working this one. Could have been MUCH MUCH worse. Easily could have lost several more homes especially having to work in tight quarters and rats nest of power lines. I did have to check to make sure this was a current video because of homes still having their Christmas lights up.

Hey John. Great coverage as usual. FDNY uses the Aerialscope which is a tower ladder. The ladder on the boom of the Aerialscope is for emergency/ escape use only. Most other fire truck manufacturers (Pierce, Sutphen, E-One, etc) make ladder towers. The basket hangs on the end of a ladder which can be used to climb up and down. My personal opinion is that the Aerialscope is the cream of the crop! Take care sir.

As usual, the internet is FULL OF INCORRECT INFORMATION. If you Google this fire, it will come up as a 3rd alarm, a 4th alarm and as this video states a 6th alarm.
THIS FIRE WAS A 4th ALARM. EXCELLENT VIDEO. I will reserve my comment about the narrative.
Skyler's video had comms...nothing worth noting. They shut down all lines and the deck gun due to water management problems. Major problem with a lack of Buckets and Ladder Pipes. Thanks John.
In alot of your video's I see firemen with no urgency and many standing around doing nothing like the FDNY! Not this fire dept! I liked everything I saw! Firemen moving with urgency and the tactics they used to try and save the next door houses with the difficult situation of wires and trees in the way! Well done!!!

Fires like this is hard to battle to start with when you have multiple structures, but when you have that many cables impeding the department's ability to use aerial assets on makes it more difficult. 2 1/2 hand lines can only do so much with that much fire, ladder trucks and deck guns help a great deal but when power and phones lines are blocking the way then the battle gets that much harder.
How come there is basically no water being poured on the fire in the house on the left? Only one hose was on it for a little while then stopped. Now the whole house is collapsed and basically burned to the ground before they start any water again? Seems like they are just letting the buildings burn to the ground before putting out the fire.Glad I don't live in the city or a tightly nit neighborhood!!
The lines they cut are RG56 cable TV drops...and phone lines...
Fantastic footage John... Yes, very tight narrow streets. North Hudson is THEE most densely populated area in the entire U.S. with 15,693 people per square mile. I don't even know how they get the trucks down some of these streets but they do. Feel terrible for these poor people who lost everything.
