I Replaced Nearly Everything Under my Lexus GX470! New E-locker!

  • This upgrade project was over a year in the making. Doing research, finding the right rear axle and getting it all purchased and installed. I could not have done it without YotaMafia so a very special thanks to them!
Here is the reason this all came about. When wheeling with the GX470 the center locking differential sends 50/50 split of power front and back, however both front and rear differentials are open. When you get off-camber this causes an open diff situation. Toyota answers this by using what they call A-track to try and brake the wheel with the least traction. In theory this is great, except it is not all that great in all circumstances. The second problem is the GX470 came with a weak rear-end which was later resolved with the GX460. The Toyota 8.0 rear end has many issues, but the biggest one causes it to self-destruct on the trails when you add some weight to the GX and get into a situation where you have extra wheel hop which is sometimes induced by a-track and sometime by bouncing on rock ledges. The solution to both problems above is an almost direct bolt on part. A rear 8.2 axle from a 2010 + FJ or 2010+ Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro which both come with an e-locker and a stronger third member. I also re-geared to Nitro 4.56 gears to help with the newly added weight and bigger tires. The rest of the upgrades are well explained in the video.
Here is some basic information on the parts and upgrades shown in this video:
    1 Rear Axle - 8.2 e-lock swap with Nitro 4.56 gears from 19 Toyota 4Runner
2 E-lock wiring harness- Dark Illusions Fabrication / darkillusionsfabrication
3 Front Diff - East coast gear supply - Purchased through YotaMafia

It is about 7 hours to get up to Windrock which is not bad. I am on the Panhandle so I am blessed the have the beach in my backyard and the mountains fairly close. I built this to wheel in the mountains.

Great job and thanks for the info. I've been looking at 4.56 and 8.2" elocked diff, but the price to play hard on the trails really jumps once you decide to go with 35s, 4.56s, and 8.2" elocked rear differential on the GX470. It's a domino effect on things that I would need to upgrade from my 2.5" lift with 33" tires.
It's good to see others do it and I hope you enjoy the new ride.

I just want to be able to add strength for gwr overall. I'd change the led to a blue bulb. Would you ever consider adding a shield to the catalytic/muffler, also I'd always put it in neutral before changing over just to help the overall life of it. Thanks for the clip. I got a heck of a deal on the rear axle with the 4.56 gears already installed. The cost varies depending on parts availability and labor rates. Links to all things are on the video description.
