It's vile, isn't it what one so-called human being can do to another human being, and especially more so when kids are involved. This, and the story of Emily Holland, are two of the most graphic I think we have covered.
We have covered some dark stories on this channel. We have another upcoming one from 1987 that as far as I'm aware, hasn't been covered by anyone on TH-cam so far. I've checked but cannot find anything on the story.
How tragic. Poor June must have been terrified. I can't understand how someone who was so intoxicated could manage to take June so quietly and provide a detailed statement to the police. But evidence is evidence. What I can't understand is if the bottle in question was covered in fingerprints how come they didn't find a match for those prints. I can only imagine he was in self denial about certain aspects of his crime, as there was no suggestion that anyone else was involved. Thank you for your research x
His fingerprints and palm print were on the bottle. For some reason though, his name was missing on the electoral register along with around 900 other people. It was only when they checked the food store and to see if anyone had been recently issued with rationing books they found him. But out of 100+ thousand people, his prints were in the last 900 to be checked! How close was he to never being arrested!
Poor little June. Glad Griffiths was caught and suffered the appropriate penalty. Poor sweet baby. This case tugs at the heartstrings. Thanks for your sensitivity in dealing with this case

What an absolutely heartbreaking story, poor little girl. It’s good that you include a visit to the graves of the victims of these stories, I like to think it (without being religious) gives a comfort to the victim that they are remembered and their story is still being told.

Thanks Konix! Whilst we have been to Blackburn on many, MANY occasions over the years, I've always felt that where the old cemetery is, its perhaps my favourite area. It always has been if Im being honest, but thats probably because of the history around the area and of course, the cemetery itself.
I don't mind either place as I'm from Haslingden BUT I do find that when I'm looking into stories in Burnley, I keep getting told off people I work with who live there NOT to have my GoPro on show in certain areas. Such as Cog Lane for one. That kinda puts us off. But then again, Blackburn does have its no-go areas too! Same as Haslingden! There are tons of stories yet to tell on Burnley. As for Whalley, we do have two that are interesting so watch this space 👀

Im retired now but I worked in mental health as a nursing assistant. We were taught the definition of Schizophrenia was ones irrational, irresponsible behaviour in the community, and when well the same people with Schizophrenia, show empathy towards others, on the other hand Psychopaths do not have the ability to feel empathy, and can commit crewel acts and feel absolutely no remorse. Im just giving my two pennies worth regarding his mental condition at the time of committing the crime, personally I think his tenancy was towards the latter, mainly due to him having no remorse regarding the savage behaviour towards the little one. An interesting story, sensitively told Chris and Vicky. I do enjoy your channel especially this type of story, its our history at the end of the day.
I agree with you he sounds like a classic Psychopath, no empathy or compassion whatsoever. Makes you wonder what sort of activity went on in that street over the years what demonic activity did this sort of thing, there is no doubt to me that the perpetrator was probably demon possessed.

Ive know about the june ann devaney case since i was a little girl from my parents. I remember my dad saying about having his finger prints taken like hundreds of other local men who did at that time. I wasnt born then but it was mentioned a lot, very sad case 😢
Been this monster it was in him , I have been intoxicated but I have never thought about hurting a child or anyone else for that matter he knew what he was doing and even were he was going to do it .
I have watched many videos about true life crimes and in a series on horrific murders and how they were solved by the FBI there was a very interesting bit of information on how they worked the investigation which sounds as if it would explain why a man living in the same street as rhe victim was the perpetrator of the murder. The investigators said that if a horrible crime like the one you are talking about is committed the very first thing they would do is to focus their investigation on the same neighbourhood of the victim. They said that right from the average petty crime to the crime of serial killers there is the probability that the criminal either lived in the same neighbourhood as the victim or in the closed neighborhoods to the victim. I would be very interested to know if the hospital was either in the neighbourhood or very near the neighbourhood where the victim and perpetrator lived? If so it would fit the FBI profile of the criminal. This man sounded like a sufferer of psychopathy. They have absolutely no remorse for what they do. Maybe he was having such a huge psychopathic episode coupled with his inebriated state that he didnt even remember the sexual attack he was known to have committed. Today's DNA testing would have not only pinned him specifically down but even given a very good description of him.
Enjoyed the video again thanks, though it was again a very sad one. One thing that puzzles me about the case is that according to Griffiths himself he had drunk a least 11 pints of bitter 2 double shots of rum and a pint of Guinness. That's a serious drinking session for anyone and he must surely have been hammered, so it seems difficult to imagine him entering a hospital, taking a baby from its cot presumably in at least partial darkness, leaving again with June in his arms, all without being heard. I couldn't manage going home after drinking a fraction of that without falling over a chair or tripping over the cat. I just wonder if Griffiths had planned what he was going to do beforehand and knew that security was a bit lax in that particular ward. Sadly, I presume nurse Humphreys was forever plagued with guilt after that sad event.
The amount of alcohol in his body also made me think after we finished recording. I mean, he says he stumbled around before crashing into June's cot but how could he be so 'mindful' to remove his shoes before entering the hospital, creep around and also think about picking up an object in case he was approached (the bottle). Like you say, wasnhe as drunk as he made out? Had he scouted the place recently? And June was just the unfortunate victim when it could have been anyone of the children he took?
I agree. I think he’s told the police that he had drunk that amount as a lame excuse for his horrendous actions. Obviously it didn’t work. He’d also said that he’d got a lift from a mate of his who had seen him staggering so much along the road. That was a lie because as you said a taxi driver said he’d dropped him off near the hospital. Why would you lie about that unless you were trying to concoct a story that you were completely intoxicated?
I’m sorry if you mentioned it on the video and I missed it but do you know if he gave a reason as to why he was dropped off at Queens Park when he lived on Birley Street? That’s some distance away and in the other direction to Blackburn town centre. Otherwise that would also suggest an element of preplanning.
All I have read is that he was dropped off near to the Delph as they called it which was very close to the hospital. But again, very odd it's it's not even close to where he lived 🤔 Unless there was a pub near by, bur then again, it was near to midnight when he was dropped off and would the pubs be open back in the 40s at that time? I don't know?

Idk what Burley streets like but I'm thinking if there's some kind of like back then some kind of underlying thing going on like there's gas or pollution that might affect people's mental health and that there was an increase in mental health at the time then there might be something there.
My mum and my brother are both paranoid schizophrenics, they may forget any actions they take when their 'alter-personality' is in charge, but they are always empathetic. I think this guy was an psychopath, as he had no remorse. Tragic story, but well told.

This, and the stories of Helen Chester, Alice Barnes and Emily Holland, are the saddest we have covered. All children and strangely, all from Blackburn. What makes people harm children in any way shape or form completely baffles me. What goes on in these people's minds I do often talk about with Vickie. Is it a switch that just comes on and they lose all remorse which enables them to have no empathy and they can commit murders without any thought? Whilst horrific, it's also an interesting subject matter no matter what people may think, but it is something I would not wish on any child or family.
I think the "confession" was as cold and calculated as the attack and murder itself. I don't believe the amount he claims to have drunk, and I certainly don't believe that a drunken man could have done what he did without attracting attention. They Know he looked at the cots of other little ones, so he was actually selecting one. I think he had preplanned everything, even down to the excuses should he be caught. "Was it the fingerprints?" Seems a very odd thing to say. I can almost imagine him thinking "Damn, I got that wrong, I should have worn gloves" He was far from stupid, and he knew he would be convicted, but was hoping by playing the drunk and incapable card he might get a more lenient sentence. That is why he left out the sexual attack too. Maybe he hoped that if he didn't mention it, it would not be used in court? I used to believe that there was no such thing as evil,; that people did evil things because they were sick of mind, but nowadays, I Do believe that some people Are evil, certain murders have convinced me of it. Some of the ones you highlight have illustrated that conclusively. But you will be getting your area a bad name! So many monsters in such a small space! I am sure if you did the same in other areas tou would get the same results, but it does make it look like all the Evil Ones live "OOp North!" Haha.
We have just got back home from filming our next story. Set in Congleton in 1776, and it's probably up there as the most brutal and savage we have yet covered. I thought the stories in Blackburn were bad, but the Congleton one seems to be on another level.
I think the crime was pre-meditated and planned, however Griffiths tried to present it as a drunken impulse. He was not only trying to minimize the murder, he was trying to avoid the gallows. Nothing nuts about this guy, he would've done it again if he hadn't been caught
They needed to have bars on the bottom floor and make sure that these kinds of guys didn't break into hospitals back then. And they could have also determined his guild more by the SA by looking at his jaw by biting into a piece of meat or something and determining what it would look like compared to the bite marks on her body.

Schizophrenia is muddled thinking. There are many versions of it. Internal thinking may not be outwardly shown. So it is plausible the internal fighting, the remorse, may not be shown. (MH nurse and family members with schizophrenia)

It was one of the first I looked into during lockdown and I sort of feel like it's become part of what we do with each and every video and podcast we cover on our website. Little Emily will always be with us in thought wherever we may go when retelling these crimes and other stories.
I am a peaceful person, but cruelty to children really makes me angry. Back in the 1970s, I was driving just West of Carmarthen, along what was then a busy "A" road, but I think is motorway now, when I noticed the traffic slowing down and steering round something. As I got closer, I could see that it was a boy, aged about 10-12, running in terror between the cars, being chased by a rough looking man kicking out at him viciously. I stopped my car, yelled at the man to stop, but he took no notice, so I grabbed him, gave him a dead leg to sober him up, and pushed him down onto the grass at the side of the carriageway. I then pulled the boy to safety, but he was too hysterical with fear to tell me what had happened. The man said, in a strong West Country accent "It's all right - he suffers from asthma" which seemed a strange reason for a brutal assault. I told him I was very angry, and that if he said anything else I would really beat him up. I flagged a car down, and asked the driver to stop at the next house, call 999 and get the police. They turned up quite quickly, I explained what had happened. I gave my details, and fully expected to be called as a witness, but never heard from the Police or Court. I often wondered how it all panned out. Many years later, I saw the man's distinctive simian features in the paper, and heard again in my mind him giving his name to the Police so long before - Frederick West.

I work at Queen's Park Hospital (now Royal Blackburn Hospital). The building that the ward CH3 was in, is now called Park View Offices.

My family always say I’m not normal because I love Blackburn and Burnley in equal measure. However neither compare to my hometown whalley.

It was one of the first I looked into during lockdown and I sort of feel like it's become part of what we do with each and every video and podcast we cover on our website. I am a peaceful person, but cruelty to children really makes me angry. Back in the 1970s, I was driving just West of Carmarthen, along what was then a busy "A" road, but I think is motorway now, when I noticed the traffic slowing down and steering round something. As I got closer, I could see that it was a boy, aged about 10-12, running in terror between the cars, being chased by a rough looking man kicking out at him viciously. I stopped my car, yelled at the man to stop, but he took no notice, so I grabbed him, gave him a dead leg to sober him up, and pushed him down onto the grass at the side of the carriageway. I then pulled the boy to safety, but he was too hysterical with fear to tell me what had happened. The man said, in a strong West Country accent "It's all right - he suffers from asthma" which seemed a strange reason for a brutal assault. I told him I was very angry, and that if he said anything else I would really beat him up. I flagged a car down, and asked the driver to stop at the next house, call 999 and get the police. They turned up quite quickly, I explained what had happened. I gave my details, and fully expected to be called as a witness, but never heard from the Police or Court. I often wondered how it all panned out. Many years later, I saw the man's distinctive simian features in the paper, and heard again in my mind him giving his name to the Police so long before - Frederick West.
