Yep. That's exactly what I noticed from the first time I saw this. The first confession he did was to honor his wife's wish. But he confessed what truly haunted him to Tao, so he could pay penance by giving his own life for him.
I got choked up myself when you were talking about brining your dogs to see you when you’re gone, so they know you didn’t abandon them. I’ve heard of people who give their dogs away because they’re not entertaining anymore or they move to a new house and they’re now inconvenient. This is unbelievable to me. All dogs want is to love you and make you happy. They think (and are) your family. How can people turn their backs on that? They trust you. It kills me every single time I just have to drop my dogs off at the vet. Just the thought in my mind that they might think I’ve given them away and don’t want them anymore is heartbreaking. For the record, if I ever get thrown out on the street, my dogs are coming with me. If it’s the end of the world and I have a couple of bites of food left before I starve to death, they’re getting a bite too. Sorry for my rant but it just came out of me.
I used to work for the city hall in my small town and part of the job was being dogcatcher sometimes and we took them all to a local no kill shelter in the next town about 10 miles away. It still to this day breaks my heart because most of the time it was people who got puppies and when they got bigger and became too much for them they just threw them out in the streets. 😢. So many people are cruel to animals! 😡

This movie is phenomenal. TBF, Clint sacrificing himself for the kid and family hits harder than a Rambo shoot-em-up moment. Also, he was spitting up blood from cancer so it wasn't like his quality of life was up there. In a time when the country is so divided and the media is pushing divisive messages and tribalism, with social media amplifying the worst and most toxic voices, we certainly need more people like Sue Lor, bridging the gap between people with different personalities and viewpoints.

Instead, it filled up with immigrants and gangs, and Walt had to watch it all go downhill as his property value went to nothing. Walt was a veteran with PTSD and survivor guilt, every war veteran who saw combat and lost friends carries that grief and anguish for the rest of their lives, for a society that has long forgotten their sacrifices. Clint had a colorful way of speaking and no filter, just true to himself, there was not a single act of racism in this film. I really like your reactions, you are perceptive, funny, and you have a great heart.
I'd argue that the gangbangers driving next to each other, or at least the young black guys were actually being racist in their speech against Walt. At least we don't know enough about all those younger individuals whether they just talk like that in general like Walt does towards every ethnic group and color.
Once I saw him cutting his grass and taking a bubble bath, I knew what was coming. Cutting his hair, the new suit, it was obvious to me he was not planning on living past that day. He has pride in how his house looks, his lawn his property and so he was tidying up before he died.
it's not how we wanted it to go, but it was the best Walt could give. He was old, he was dying, he had many regrets. This was his way to leave the world in a way that left people with a good image of him, instead of seeing him waste away to sickness while becoming more and more bitter and resentful.

When my son was killed..I woke saying this prayer..I'm not Catholic...it wasn't until that night that I was told of his passing... A true late bloomer, his acting got better and better once he got into his fifties. His directing career has mostly been a series of masterpieces, starting with 1988's "Bird". One of the greatest men the old Hollywood system produced.

This is a very sad movie, as he sacrificed everything to make sure Thau would have a normal life and would never experience killing someone, worrying that he would end up in prison and throw his entire life away.

When he died, 3000 showed up in this small town... and we fed them all a traditional meal (3 sheeps and 2 cows). The number of stories I've heard from people who were once suicidal that changed their minds at the last moment because they thought about who was going to take care of their pets is both too many and not enough. Not everyone deserve to have a pet, of course. There are people who will never be anything but cruel, careless, and evil. I just wish everyone in need could have an unconditional furry friend to lean unto when times are rough.
Outstanding film. For me, this is the best film of the past 20 years. Eastwood is a superb actor and director. I felt how you felt watching this film. I love how you thought of his dog and how you would want your dogs to come and see you after you've gone. Our animals, whether cats or dogs, are our family. ❤
My family were WW2/Korean/Vietnam War vets and I assure you every insult was real not made up. Even though Clint didnt see action he is a Korean War vet.
I don't think Walt was racist. I think he had demons that made him angry at the world. The girl brought him out of it. She accepted him as he was. He needed that. He did bad things in Vietnam and the media and public condemned Vietnam Vets when they returned home. That added to the guilt he felt. He was also dealing with the loss of his wife.

Really glad you watched this. (You said you had to stop watching these sad movies about a month ago!) It was a good plan. He was coughing up blood; all he had in store for him was a painful time left, so he killed two birds by relieving himself of the extended period of sickness and jailing the hoodlums. He got them to convict themselves and he was not commiting any more killings; he was just lighting his cigarette.
I'm from Detroit, and I gotta say this movie was huge for us when it was released. Glad you took the time to review it! People saw a different, more serious side of life over here and gave it from a veteran's perspective too which I thought was pretty cool. I remember when they filmed it here. It's in my top 10 favorite movies of all time for sure
If this was the first Clint Eastwood movie you have seen there's a treasure of great movies he's in. I strongly suggest checking out his 1992 western called Unforgiven. One of the greatest westerns ever made.
Don't worry, dogs are very smart and spiritual animals. They understand when we die, they feel it. My mom's little ancient dog died the day after she died. I didn't have to show him her body, he was half blind by then anyway and couldn't see if I tried to. He just laid down in her kitchen and never woke up.

Walt on this movie was just like my dad---a Korean War vet himself, who actually taught me that rhyme ("spectacles, testicles, wallet & watch") when I was getting ready to leave the house to make sure I had what I needed. I saw this movie with my dad and turned to him and told him "they made a movie about your life!" and we both loved it. Love how much you love your puppies--ours are equally important to us. The thing that bothers me about his sons is that birthday conversation. “Let’s send you to a home.” In my family that conversation would be “come live with my family so we can take care of you.”
If you want to see more Eastwood, there's Rawhide; a tv series about cowboys herding steers to the train station. Each episode is 30 minutes. The theme song was used in The Blues Brothers movie. A movie would be The Good The Bad and The Ugly where three men tried to find buried gold. My favorite is Unforgiven about a retired outlaw collecting a bounty with Morgan Freeman..
The first movie I watched with my husband and I’m half Asian! 🤣🤣🤣 I laughed so hard at his insults and at first my husband was mortified then when he heard me cracking up he liked my sense of humor. This was an amazing movie, it was so sad at the end but satisfying his family didn’t get a thing. Disgusting how they treated an elderly family member like that.

I think it has something to do with our age , I have cried more in the last few years then I have my whole life. Movie with heavy subjects like Clint Eastwoods character and how his own family only see him as a dollar sign , and having a closer relationship with strangers. Just the little things that strikes me all the time. I can’t see the green mile without something to blow my nose . It is not a sign of weakness it’s just means you have a big heart. You are able to feel something real and in this world full of fake people that sir puts you up there with my respect!!! You are an awesome person and there should be more people like you. The gun Walt has is an M1 Garand. Shoots a big nasty round and has an 8 round capacity. And yes I would definitely call it a cannon cause it sounds like one when you shoot it.

This is a very sad movie, as he sacrificed everything to make sure Thau would have a normal life and would never experience killing someone, worrying that he would end up in prison and throw his entire life away.

Notorious for beating down cops for drinking in public, notorious for standing up for his military friends (including my mom). When he died, 3000 showed up in this small town... and we fed them all a traditional meal (3 sheeps and 2 cows). They came from all corners of this beloved US of A to say he saved them, he fought for them... he is the embodiment of the USofA should be. The number of stories I've heard from people who were once suicidal that changed their minds at the last moment because they thought about who was going to take care of their pets is both too many and not enough.
Not everyone deserve to have a pet, of course. There are people who will never be anything but cruel, careless, and evil. I just wish everyone in need could have an unconditional furry friend to lean unto when times are rough.

My family were WW2/Korean/Vietnam War vets and I assure you every insult was real not made up. Even though Clint didnt see action he is a Korean War vet.

I don't think Walt was racist. I think he had demons that made him angry at the world. The girl brought him out of it. She accepted him as he was. He needed that. He did bad things in Vietnam and the media and public condemned Vietnam Vets when they returned home. That added to the guilt he felt. He was also dealing with the loss of his wife.

Really glad you watched this. (You said you had to stop watching these sad movies about a month ago!) It was a good plan. He was coughing up blood; all he had in store for him was a painful time left, so he killed two birds by relieving himself of the extended period of sickness and jailing the hoodlums. He got them to convict themselves and he was not commiting any more killings; he was just lighting his cigarette.

If this was the first Clint Eastwood movie you have seen there's a treasure of great movies he's in. I strongly suggest checking out his 1992 western called Unforgiven. One of the greatest westerns ever made.

Don't worry, dogs are very smart and spiritual animals. They understand when we die, they feel it. My mom's little ancient dog died the day after she died. I didn't have to show him her body, he was half blind by then anyway and couldn't see if I tried to. He just laid down in her kitchen and never woke up.

I love how clint always spoke his truth and never bit his tongue,always spoke his mind regardless of what anyone else thought or felt about it.
Walt on this movie was just like my dad---a Korean War vet himself, who actually taught me that rhyme ("spectacles, testicles, wallet & watch") when I was getting ready to leave the house to make sure I had what I needed. I saw this movie with my dad and turned to him and told him "they made a movie about your life!" and we both loved it. Love how much you love your puppies--ours are equally important to us. If you want to see more Eastwood, there's Rawhide; a tv series about cowboys herding steers to the train station. Each episode is 30 minutes. The theme song was used in The Blues Brothers movie. A movie would be The Good The Bad and The Ugly where three men tried to find buried gold. My favorite is Unforgiven about a retired outlaw collecting a bounty with Morgan Freeman..

The first movie I watched with my husband and I’m half Asian! 🤣🤣🤣 I laughed so hard at his insults and at first my husband was mortified then when he heard me cracking up he liked my sense of humor. This was an amazing movie, it was so sad at the end but satisfying his family didn’t get a thing. Disgusting how they treated an elderly family member like that.

I think it has something to do with our age , I have cried more in the last few years then I have my whole life. Movie with heavy subjects like Clint Eastwoods character and how his own family only see him as a dollar sign , and having a closer relationship with strangers. Just the little things that strikes me all the time. I can’t see the green mile without something to blow my nose . It is not a sign of weakness it’s just means you have a big heart.
