Hi denny the budgie I am so sorry to hear that denny sadly passed away may God rest his sole I know how it feels to lose a bird I lost a baby love bird
My birds favorite are sprouted bird seed "lawns". I grow them in a shallow dish on a damp paper towel after soaking overnight until they grow green shoots two inches long. Then I put their tiny green "lawn" for them to forage in on top their cage while they're out playing. They absolutely love it!
Rosy and Raspberry are so cute🥰 I’ve never heard of sprouting before! Sprouted seeds look so cool! This looks so yummy and natural, your birds loved it😃 thanks for sharing😊
I use grapefruit seed extract to keep my sprouts from growing mold or bacteria. It works really well. I hope this gets more bird moms and dads to start sprouting!!🌾🌰🌱 It is a lot of what small birds eat in the wild. Thanks Donna!!💕
China Prairie also recommends using grapefruit seed extract during the sprouting and they sell their own formulation. See my previous comment about the importance of fresh vs. dead grains and seeds.
Thats really neat. Quite the difference with growth rate between some seeds. Looks pretty easy to set up and do. Will try and keep that in mind for any future birbs.
Hi Donna , that sure is a lot of work and love you put into all of your bird food .I would like to sprout barley first sort of trying one by one to see if Stormy will go for them.Hes just coming around and eating carrots and cantaloupe with his organic peas in pod. This barley might be just what he needs first.Thsnk you for sharing all of those sprouts. It was very interesting.I never knew I could sprout barley .Thank you.
This makes me happy. My veteran told me to try sprouts for my bird . I have one budgie and he is a little over weight. He only eats seeds and some fruit and only corn for veggies. Also he wants what ever I eat but I know that’s not good. So I will try this but where do I get the sprouts seeds at ? There not at the pet stores.. And this video really helped me . Thank you I will save this video for sure.
I've actually purchased from my avian vet fresh seeds pack. All kinds of seeds in one small pack just right for my birds. Very healthy fresh seeds rather than dry ones. And of course egg millet for better egg laying and egg shells. Calcium is essential for birds.
Great video, very informative. Never knew anything about sprouting or how nutritious it is for birds. I am going to start with mung beans, but since they take a few days to sprout, would alfalfa sprouts now be good also; alfalfa sprouts are found fresh in supermarkets and i could start giving them to my budgies right now; what do you think?
Hello this is a very old comment but i am just letting you know that if you are feeding birds seeds please stop they can get fatty liver disease! That is like feeding a 1-6 year old burgers there whole life.
Hey Donna I just wanted to ask some questions in regards to this video: 1. Are the sprouts served to your birds fresh after sprouting? (Not refrigerated right?) 2. How do you store remaining sprouts and how long are they good for? 3. If I begin to serve various sprouts to my budgies (who currently only eat seeds and fruits, not interested in fresh veggies), is this sufficient enough for their veggie intake? Love your birds, your energy, and your knowledge. ☺️🌾
My friend Leslie Moran has used sprouts for a long time to keep her birds healthy, and what she does is rinsing the sprouts before giving them to the birds so that they remain fresh in the food dishes. And sprouts can be easily stored in the fridge too! It doesn't affect to their nutrient content because the temperature is above freezing in the fridge. And it helps to keep them fresh for longer because the low temperature slows their growth👍 Also, good quality sprouts last about 3-5 days in the fridge AFTER sprouted.
I watched someone who was suppose to be a “pro” at this & she had an organic seed mix with Quinoa being one of the seeds & I’ve just been adding it to their diet Edit: so rinse well then soak 8 hours after that only rinse 2 times daily til sprouts?
They could most likely eat any sprout that is on the smaller side. Green peas are larger. You can offer various sprouts and see with is easiest for them to eat. I would say the smaller the better
After I received the Easysprout unit, I sprouted some mung beans and they are a great hit with my 4 budgies; finally I got them eating something nutritious. I tried sprouting brown lentils, but they did not sprout and the natural foods store only recommended I try red lentils. The store does not carry whole green peas for sprouting, they only carry split peas and could not recommend me trying to find green peas anywhere else. I could google it and would probably eventually come up with something. But I was wondering if you could add sprouting beans/seeds to your Amazon store ?. I would certainly buy mung beans, lentils, green peas, broccoli seeds. Any possibility?
Hello, your videos are great source of information. I have four month old pair of suncanore. They are loving and playful but they some time also bite my fingure or ears. Can you please tell how to stop their habit of bitting. Thanks
Hi, it's best to read their body language as to when they will bite to avoid being bit. They are babies so they will be nippy. Also try to redirect their biting by giving then something to do such as chewing on toys instead. Check out the channel called Birdtricks as they have bird training videos that may help you.
China Prairie is a wonderful company in Sacramento, CA that sells clean, fresh seed mixes for sprouting. Purchasing a fresh mix from CP is a safer bet than making one's own mix and here is why: The reason that most of the barley and budgie seed did not sprout is because it is not fresh. Rule of thumb: When choosing a brand of budgie seed just for dry eating, take the time to sprout some to determine freshness. Some brands are less fresh. The seeds and beans that fail to sprout but have soaked are probably not a great thing. Hopefully the birds will leave these duds in the bowl as they are much more likely to harbor bacteria and mold. The sprouted, live seeds produce natural anti-bacterial and anti-mold substances. I don't recommend feeding the soaked, unsprouted barley. True, soaked seed/grain/legumes offer a different nutrition profile than their dried counterparts even if fed before they have put out a root tip. HOWEVER, that is only the case if the seeds are fresh and live and chemical changes are occurring inside the seed. Soaking dead seeds, on the other hand merely invites spoilage. Donna, in the future, don't feed soaked, dead barley, etc. P.S. Love your channel. Thanks for all the great videos.
Thanks so much! One question: isn't it bad that the beans are raw? I'm just wondering because I read birds shouldn't eat raw beans, but maybe it's different when they're sprouted? 🤷♀️
What are your experiences with sprouts animating hens to lay eggs? My cockatiel hen started laying eggs (we're a household of females only lol) and it took me by surprise!
Sprouts or and soft food does encourage them to lay eggs unfortunately. Only feed dry food and dark leafy greens that are high in calcium. Take away greens if she continues but provide calcium so she does not get calcium deprived. Take away anything that resembles a nest.
Hi, I don't rinse them once in the fridge. They can keep for 3 to 5 days sometimes longer depending on what type of sprouts they are. Smell them and look for mold. If they smell bad or you see mold then don't use them.
what can you use to sprout please tellme someone i want to sprout for my eclectur parrot and if you want to feed them the sprouts do you feed the seed to?

Your birds will love the sprouts 😃
Thank you for your video! Your birds are so sweet!
Spray Millet starts sprouting at the 3rd day in my experience. White Millet will start sprouting at the 3rd day too
Yes.. For me too
Thats really neat. Quite the difference with growth rate between some seeds. Looks pretty easy to set up and do. Will try and keep that in mind for any future birbs.
The difference in growth rates in this demo is due to the degree of freshness/aliveness of the products Donna purchased.
Oooo Yum! I will need to try this. Thanks again for another educational video! :)
Awwww I love your birds
Brilliant explanation thanks so much. I’ve tried and failed at this a few times so will definitely be doing your method next !
Thank you for such a well made and informative video. 🐦
Thank you this was really helpful
Wow 😮superb 💖 my budgies loves sprouts, I feed them twice a week.
great information Donna :) I still have yet to do this successfully...LOL! Thank you for the motivation to keep trying ;)

Hi, you can find legumes and seeds at the grocery store to sprout. You can also sprout your budgie seed.
I'm the third comment with a bird as the profile picture
Cute bird edit: typo lol

I usually place the strainer in a large ziplock bag but I don't seal it. Keeps some moisture in and has enough air to prevent mold from growing

Rinse more if it's hot or dry in your house. You don't want them to dry out.
Informative
Can I feed my budgies clover sprouts? Sorry for asking.
Yes you can 😀 Don't be sorry, I don't mind answering questions
Hi donna 😊❤ thanka for this . How long centimetres good for a dove ? I mean could they eat very larg sprout 🤔 ?

That's great that you gave it a try. I will search for them and add to my store if I can find some.
Try Sprouting their seed also as they may like it.
I read if u put a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar in a cup of water for 45 mins, then you rinse. B4 the rest of your steps.

How long do those sprouted seeds last. Do you give it all in one day or can they be given over the course of a few days?

The beans are safe when sprouted. Raw beans are not safe for birds to eat

I have stored them for 3 to 5 days. Discard them if they smell off or if you see mold

They would sprout more quickly if you place them in a dark place after hydrating them.
