  • This is one of the most talked about topics on my channel comments... Tough Solar, charging times, battery life, lithium ion durability and general paranoia about whether someone will get caught out on an expedition with a battery going flat on them without prior warning.
In this video I talk about my experience with G-Shock Tough Solar and traditional battery models such as the GG-B100 Mudmaster. Many people compare the Mudmaster GWG 1000 vs GG B100.
What is best? What Mudmaster is better value for money? How long will GG B100 battery last? What is G-Shock Tough Solar? I attempt to give some help here based on my experience of G-Shock ownership.
I talk about experience with Tough Solar watches as well as traditional battery watches like the GW-9400 Rangeman and GA-2100. I hope it provides some useful insight for anyone trying to choose between one of these watches.

A useful and helpful video for folks with respect to making possible purchasing decisions. I'll just share some thoughts/experiences from someone who spent over a decade as a Design for Sigma Master Black Belt working with engineers in developing technologically-based products. I saw a lot of comments (as you have mentioned) that when the GGB-100 debuted, some folks were not going to buy it because it was not Tough Solar. That's fine, folks get to decide for themselves what constitutes a value proposition for them. But when it comes to functionality, features and cost, it's important to understand there is _no free lunch;_ something will *always* to have to give when it comes to striking a balance between functionality, quality attributes, and price. The GWG-1000 is a Triple Sensor Tough Solar watch with an MSRP of ~USD$800. The GWG-100 was also a Tough Solar watch, and it sold for ~$350, but, it was a _Dual Sensor_ watch, not a Triple Sensor watch. You can have Tough Solar, but at $350, there's no room in the "budget" (technically the Bill of Materials, aka "BOM") for Triple Sensor functionality. Conversely, the GG-1000 was a Triple Sensor watch, but also at a price $350....no Tough Solar. At this price point, something's gotta give, either the number of sensors *_OR_* the Tough Solar functionality. If you want Tough Solar AND Triple Sensor, well, that watch is going to sell for 800 smackers because of the additional cost for Casio with respect to the BOM. That watch is the GWG-1000. Now, enter the GGB-100, and...it's a Carbon Core Guard, Quad Sensor, watch that sells for a MSRP of $380. Folks were griping that it wasn't Tough Solar. Well, at $380, you're not going to be able to buy a Carbon Core Guard, Quad-Sensor G-shock because 1) there likely isn't room in the module for the circuitry and parts for Tough Solar functionality and 2) if one engineered a Tough Solar watch that was a Carbon Core Guard, Quad-Sensor G-shock, that watch would likely cost about $1000. Bottom-line: There's no free lunch when it comes to product design and functionality. You're not gonna get a Tough Solar, Quad-Sensor, Carbon Core Guard GGB-100 for only...$380. Folks have to decide for themselves which combination of features, functions and price point works for them. The nice thing is, Casio gave folks lots of options at reasonable price points to be able to get the Mudmaster that works best for them. For me, the GGB-100, with it's tech and being a very light and very comfortable, very durable watch to wear, is that watch. I've not thought twice about the fact that it's not Tough Solar; its just a *helluva* good watch. Cheers.

Thank you very much for the thoughtful and comprehensive comment. Clearly written with product design experience. Much appreciated. And I 100% agree, it's very easy to compare these watches because they are both a Mudmasters but they are different beasts at different price points with significantly different functions. You can't have your cake and eat it unless you pay for it. You can't cram in all possible functions, and as you mention the great variety provided by Gshock solves that problem. And that is why I love G-Shock. Cheers man!

@@stormrider1119 Yes, that's it exactly, Stormrider. Many folks think one can have "infinite" functionality at "zero" cost. I see the same behavior from folks that gripe about similar things on digital camera forums. They want a 50mm f/1.0 lens that is small and light and only costs $600, and....they _can't_ have that. A 50mm f/1.0 lens will be vey large, heavy, and really expensive. The physics and engineering constraints are that there is no way around these facts. The problems come when amateurs think they know what constitutes technical product engineering and manufacturing. Cheers, mate.

I've heard of Tough Solar G Shocks still going strong after 10 years. My practice is to put a newly acquired Tough Solar on the windowsill for a week, especially in winter. This brings anything up to full charge. After that, I leave it on the windowsill for a full day once a month. I have a four year old resin bluetooth square which shows full charge with this charging schedule, and a three year old full metal square which is also at full charge. I've just got a secondhand Gravitymaster which is nearly at full charge after having run to almost nothing.

I think people overthink it. Sadly.
Oh, it’s not Solar. I’m going to die! Please. I’ve watched most of the videos out there for the GA-2100 and GG-B100. The comments are stupid. “If only it has solar”, “no solar, no sale”.
I recently changed the battery in my GA-100 after many years of constant use. I haven’t had to change the battery in the GG-B100 yet. But when I do, I look forward to it as I also enjoy the peace of mind of applying silicon to the caseback gasket. Something most solar watches don’t get done because of the assumption that they are maintenance free.
