#55 How to do the background cleanup on our freehand carved wood signs

  • Eric & Dave show how they do the background cleanup. Also the way they do a double cut on small 1" outset letters. That way there is a buffer zone around the letters so you're less likely to hit them with the 90 degree v groove. Eric mentions the Provest sign. You can see close ups of it on our facebook page. If you watch this in full screen it gets kinda fuzzy, sorry. We'll be upgrading our camera soon.

    These old videos are still a wealth of knowledge. You should do a "Back to Basics" series of videos. You've got 10+ years of great teachings out here on the Tube.

    I love the way that you both do not leave anything to our imagination, but show us step by step to include mistakes and how you fix those. Thank you.

    These are great videos and making clouds what I have done is to make the cloud area then go over the area with a rabbeting/flat bit to take the high spots down below the surrounding surface. Then I spray the ink. That works well for me.

      @oldave100  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like that would work well. Glad you found a way that works for you. Thank you for watching and your input, Eric

    where do you get your stencil? Do you print them with a 3D printer? I have 2 1/2" and 4" from Rockler, but looks like they only offer one font. What do you recommend? I was thinks a Cricut printer. I have just began making a few signs and your tutorials are, by far, the greatest help I have gotten. Thanks

      We make and sell our own laser cut layout letters. You can see them all on our website makeawoodsign.com. Click on the Sign Carving Supplies tab and everything is in there. Thank you Tony for watching and the kind words. If you have any specific questions I can answer for you just let me know eric@makeawoodsign.com

      I print mine out on my larger format printer. It can take up to 13" wide paper but mostly use 11 X 17, then glue it on the board using spray adhesive. You can make it any font using Word or some other program, add graphics and go from there.

    Hey Dave I'm kinda new to this and wondering if there are any tricks to doing the back ground at all that you can give that way I don't accidentally make it just look flat?

    How long do the bits normally last,a few weeks,few months

    • @oldave100
      @oldave100  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends on several factors. How many signs, what kid of wood, how much moisture, and which bit? As an example, On the profile bit it will last approx 20-30 signs if you are using dry softwoods before it needs resharpening. If you have more specific questions you can email me directly eric@makeawoodsign.com. Thank you....

    What about a perfectly smooth background that becomes a border / container for a wooden puzzle.
