The boys blowing up urinals and messing up bathrooms was very likely a trend called “devious licks.” The idea is that a student steals or vandalizes something from/at school. I teach middle school, and we had a terrible problem with that one. The wild thing is these kids videoed it and shared it on social media, often with the public. We caught so many of them because they shared it on social media, and admin somehow eventually got the video! Nah, if you think about it for a couple minutes, you'll remember we knew plenty of kids just as dumb. The difference is we didn't have a high res camera in our pocket 24/7 and high speed internet everywhere we went. The smart kids are still either staying out of trouble or at least not leaving a clear trail of documentation to themselves. If anything, it's probably easier to avoid getting caught now, because it's easier to be invisible when everyone else is so visible and busy looking at each other.
It was such a problem we ended up putting cages over our soap and paper towel dispensers. When that didn't work, we ended up keeping all but a couple bathrooms locked for most of the day. It sucked. For the kids, I mean. I work there and have a key to the staff bathrooms so... get wrecked, you little shits.

He didn't get it because the western weird ass view of Buddhism is not the same as the actual Asian religion. Americans are extremely offensive about Buddhism most of the time, and seem to think that it is ok to mock it in a way they would never treat another religion. And yes, it has rules & prohibitions & you do not get to decide your own path, there is the same set of proscriptive rules that every major religion has. Also the one-ness is part of their world view, he cannot comprehend the idea of not being in oneness with the universe so it would be like making a joke about duality to us. We only know duality so there isn't much to discuss. Buddhists raised in that culture only know oneness, so it's hard for them to see a joke about it.

I haven't been to church in a long while, by intent. But I realize my religious conditioning may be why I enjoy tuning in to JJ. Folks have wondered how he's able to come up with new material weekly, commenting in a timely manner on all matter of social trends, as a comic. But there is a profession that's expected to provide sociohistorical background to contemporary events as a service their community on a weekly basis. And turn out bangers that are as entertaining as they are informative. Thank you brother Johnson for the word you brought to us today on suffering and mindfulness. Amen!
I've honestly never attended a church where your description would be apt. I've tried quite a few over my many years, but gave up 10-12 years ago... I honestly think if I'd found a church that was socially aware and obviously gave a frick (beyond occasional food pantries) I may have stuck around. One place I left specifically BECAUSE they were so insulated from social reality. They had plans to expand, not an immediate need by their own statements but a "growth mentality". That was 15ish years ago, and there was the economic recession hitting HARD. Their ONLY response was to increase the pressure to donate and commit to the specific building project! I brought up what was going on, and all the GOOD that could be done with that money. The pastor's response was incredibly disappointing... still feel my skin crawl remembering it. Talk about ENTITLED... Soooo... yeah. I tried a couple other places after that, but... Oh well. Sorry for the ramble 😂 Ya got me thinking though - I wonder if there's a GOOD one around, that would accept ME.... 🤔 (there's a lot of self-segregation here, and the churches that are NOT out of touch and privileged af are, I think, kinda... a "photo negative" of me, to quote Christopher Titus😅)

I gave myself a black eye on a bedframe once and my friends basically threw an intervention because they thought my boyfriend did it. And I can understand their concern because "I slammed my face into a bedframe" sounds like a horrible excuse. (I was at a hotel and it was one of those really tall, fancy bedframes.) But I remember the whole thing so clearly because I was pleading with them, "No, I swear, I'm not making excuses for him. I'm just a dumbass." That joke made me realize that I am not alone. Thank you. 🤣 (It was technically the footboard but it was for exactly the reason that you said. I got up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom and didn't turn any lights on. I tried crawling back into bed and...SMASH. Although, my boyfriend did laugh hysterically, so maybe I don't feel so bad that my friends didn't trust him after that.)
I was on the other side of that relationship once. My GF at the time managed to trip over nothing and while flailing hit herself in the eye. Whenever we went out, people gave me dirty looks. We would laugh about it, but I thought I was going to get beaten by dudes a couple times.

In Thailand it's common for young men to be monks for a year or two. This brings honor to their family. They don't necessarily want to be monks and most aren't planning to be a monk for life. The meth monks were a small group of young men.

Oh, lord I needed this laugh By the way my bestie is a Buddhist and shared with me the two arrows belief: “Two Arrows” teaching in Buddhism is a powerful metaphor about how we experience and respond to pain and suffering. Here’s a brief explanation: The First Arrow Physical Pain: This represents the inevitable physical or emotional pain we experience in life. It’s the initial hurt or discomfort that comes from an event or situation. The Second Arrow Mental Suffering: This is the additional suffering we create through our reactions to the first arrow. It includes our thoughts, worries, and emotional responses that amplify the initial pain. The Buddha taught that while we can’t always avoid the first arrow, we can learn to manage our reactions to avoid the second arrow12. For example, if you experience physical pain (the first arrow), the second arrow might be the anxiety, frustration, or negative thoughts that follow. By recognizing and managing these reactions, you can reduce your overall suffering. This teaching is particularly relevant to mindfulness and meditation practices, which help individuals become more aware of their thoughts and reactions, allowing them to respond more skillfully to life’s challenges.”

As a Thai person, the turn of topic to those buddhist monks definitely got me on the ground laughing. Oh, they have been really baaaaad. 🤣🤣🤣 Not demure or mindful at all. Wonderful set as always, Josh.
This was one of my favorites. I love the bit about Buddhist monks. I spent time in Thailand and even went to a retreat at one of the temples. I did see how things could go wrong there. I love how you merged it with the demure and mindful story. Fantastic as usual.
Haven't gotten to that part of the video yet but many everyday people go to those monasteries for 2 reasons: 1. Kind of a national service with a spiritual base for young people post school. They tell me its not required but you won't really be seen as marriage material/responsible adult if you don't do it. 2. Many people go and stay for awhile for things like after a divorce or addiction rehab. Those times you need to regroup, uplift, and heal... It seems nice because people don't need to hit bottom or have insurance if they feel their lives are going down these paths. But my point is they wear robes and are called "monks" but are not the more enlightened ordained leadership. Just based on this I'd assume people from other cultures would lump them into one, not many everyday people attempting to navigate their life transitions in a solid way. But I think there are posers in every religion that need to heal from being posers.
I didn’t really care about the "demure trend", so I didn't rush to watch this one. What a mistake. I thought I was here for the comedy, but his comments about ending our suffering was so needed as I try to move forward after my husband's death.
I'm one of the people who haven't been alive for the last couple weeks. I honestly had no idea why ive been seeing the word demure being used way more often than usual.
That pool thing was so funny. I was actually drowning in a lake at summer camp and my friends had a similar reaction. Like, is she drowning? I think she’s drowning.😂
I have been in 1 knockdown thrown down brawl and it was an unprovoked fight with a couple monks, I won’t say what region. I am talking full on brawl and any items such as a sewer lid or otherwise heavy objects came into play. It was a pretty surreal and crazy escalation on an afternoon meeting coworkers, out of the blue. Anyway afterwards we drank some beers together and they invited us to visit the monastery, region and families to show the hospitality and good nature.

@@linmonash1244 lol no! Jackass was a series of movies that came out in the 2000s where a group of men would do absolutely stupid stunts. Like. Shoot one of them out of a canon or, as Josh said, one of the guys would go up behind their friend and kick him in the balls. None of these men were professionals or stunt men or anything like that. They were just every day dudes. (They got featured on Shark Week for the last couple of years, and one of their people actually got bit by a shark, if that tells you anything about their antics). Before TikTok, InstaGram, Vine and when TH-cam was a different website (used to be a place where people would share these more “home video” styled videos than the type of content it hosts today) Gen X and Millennials would use video cameras/camcorders to record ourselves doing whatever stupid shit we were getting into as preteens/teens lol. Because this took place in the days pre-internet/before the internet became an invasion of personal privacy (ie people treating social media like it’s their own personal diary, and the internet was seen as this weird, niche thing to chronically use) a lot of the stuff us Gen X & Millennials recorded is still on some physical VHS/DVD/chip somewhere lmao! Basically the Jackass franchise represented the interests of a generation of young boys lmao! They don't know what demure means if bringing pastries to work is their definition! I can see this going wrong so fast - demure is one step away from tradwife. I was told my entire childhood and adolescence (in an ultra-Orthodox Jewish community) that a good Jewish girl is demure, meaning stays hidden and silent.
Agree completely @dainybernstein4751 Demure also meant submitting to male authority. Putting their needs above your own. It also could mean dressing "modestly" which controls our bodies and puts the responsibility of other men's thoughts and actions onto the woman. No tradwife! We're not going back! Vote Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in November for freedom!
the creator jools has made videos about how the “very demure, very mindful” is 100% her dunking on herself and most (if not all) the things she says are not demure are things she has done irl (like wearing lime green eye shadow on her first day of work)
Demure most definitely dinnae mean 'hidden' and 'silent'. Demure represents reserved, modest, shy, mature. Or basically, demure. If you grew up with it, no one needs to explain the definition. Proper etiquette would dictate all people behave demurely.
Jamaican girl, here. Same here. Demure is the law for us...lol. In traditional Rastafarian culture, the women STILL do not wear pants in public. But it is more of an expression of "feminine divinity" ...a little less "be a lady". I even took etiquette classes in school😁 (yes...they have that in America!lol) ....I say, you gotta learn the rules if you wanna break them! 💅🏾

Historically there have been a lot of militant buddhist sects in Asia. During the feudal-era civil wars of Japan they'd often pick a side suddenly and show up to battles and start wrecking factions they didn't like.
Some-people become a monk only for the benefit, living of donations, some act like a mega church pastor, preaching the wrong message to trick people in to giving them money, Some even create a spin-off cult and do all sort of evil stuff. It's quite a big on-going problem in Thailand.
My sister 'became' a Buddhist, changed her name and decided she was far more spiritually 'superior' to everyone else in the family, and most everyone else as well. { She was - and still is- all about 'being superior'} After quite a while, of putting up with her and her shenanigans, and her chronic freeloading ( they must have been VERY patient ) they actually threw her out! The final straw, allegedly, was something to do with setting herself up as some kind of 'wise expert' and selling 'teachings'. It was explained to her that these were free teachings to the public and not for profiteering... Which she was quite outraged about. "What! We can beg - but not make a business?!? How DARE they tell me what NOT to do!" Years of Spiritual teachings and none of it sunk in.

A variation on the punchline from one of my favorite jokes ever. “ What did the Zen Buddhist say to the hotdog vendor?”
Someone made a variation of that joke to the actual Dalai Lama.
Iirc, it's an aussi reporter interviewing him.
He didn't get it
@@staomruel It was John Oliver and it was about the Dalai Lama going to a pizza place and saying, "Can you make me one with everything?". Such a great joke and wildly disappointing that he didn't get it lol

I sincerely believe he’s the best up-and-coming comic of his generation.
He has the wisdom of an old soul.
He's the best guy for sure, check out Taylor Tomlinson if you want the best in the current generation 😁
@@AConquerorsVendetta Agree with the OP on this one. Josh Johnson is the best up and coming comedian of his and Taylor Tomlinson’s generation. He did the same for his Detroit show, took the time to meet and greet everyone. I'm just so impressed that he comes out with fresh content constantly while doing so many shows and also the meet and greets.
The consistency on these topics is insane

Came for the demure explanation, stayed to learn about Buddhism. Absolutely incredible set as always Josh
Amen!
beautiful comparison 👏🏽
Amen
You tried friend. The fact that youre so pressed about human suffering and church apathy makes you a better Christian than many Christians. ❤praying with you and for churches to do so much better@KOKO-uu7yd
Try a lutheran church. Mine wasnt too bad, but seeing all the other churches around sure turned me against religion early 😅 Their whole thing was they split off because of corruption and bribing your sins away, among other things, Martin luther was branded a heretic and an outlaw. The tithe is optional.@@KOKO-uu7yd

I'm just a dumbass."
That joke made me realize that I am not alone. Thank you. 🤣
(It was technically the footboard but it was for exactly the reason that you said.
Happened to my mom after she had surgery under her eye. After, it looked like a black eye. WHAT DID DAD DO???? I shrieked when I saw her. Was about to fight my old man! 😂
Try taking your 2 year old daughter out in public, including a trip to the Drs... Who you told to sit down in the bath because standing up is dangerous... She slips, hits the area above her eye on the spout, wakes up the next day with an absolute shiner. Yes, that was fun!

In Thailand it's common for young men to be monks for a year or two. This brings honor to their family. They don't necessarily want to be monks and most aren't planning to be a monk for life. The meth monks were a small group of young men.
It's like enshitification of religion.
@@apcolleenno… it’s not. For foreigners, maybe more a lesson to not generalize large groups of people (even if they are self-selecting) & remember monks are human!
Yeah, Thailand is fairly unique in that young men are often forced to do it, for better and for worse. In other countries where it's 100% voluntary and a lifelong commitment rather than a summer camp, there is obviously *much* less "popping off" :)
There are weekly scandals about monks. Either stealing money, meth or pdf file behaviour and physical abuse. Sadly it's not a one off.

Oh, lord I needed this laugh
By the way my bestie is a Buddhist and shared with me the two arrows belief:
“Two Arrows” teaching in Buddhism is a powerful metaphor about how we experience and respond to pain and suffering. Here’s a brief explanation:
The First Arrow
Physical Pain: This represents the inevitable physical or emotional pain we experience in life. It’s the initial hurt or discomfort that comes from an event or situation.
The Second Arrow
Mental Suffering: This is the additional suffering we create through our reactions to the first arrow.
17:16 This is a deep concept and it’s really cool that Josh can make it accessible.

This was one of my favorites. I love the bit about Buddhist monks. I spent time in Thailand and even went to a retreat at one of the temples. I did see how things could go wrong there. I love how you merged it with the demure and mindful story. Fantastic as usual.
Haven't gotten to that part of the video yet but many everyday people go to those monasteries for 2 reasons:
You're a comedian, you're a reporter, you're a philosopher. A very demure, very mindful triple threat
Actually, there's suffering in the bad AND the good, because the bad feels like it's going to last forever and the good is actually temporary
And there's the rub. For Buddhists, EVERYTHING on this plane of existence is transistory and impermanent.

Lmaoooooooo so true!! Forgot about those days 😂🤣
I've never hear of JackAss. Did Josh say it was your 'friends' who did this!?!
I guess they could be like “Influencers” before that was a thing- if “Influencers” filmed themselves head butting a beehive to get some laughs from their friends and had 0 interest in actually selling you anything 😂🤣
@@linmonash1244 "Jackass" was an American television show in which white male teenagers (or young adults who would subsequently never grow past teen mentality) hurt themselves and each other in increasingly imaginative, usually crude ways.
Vote Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in November for freedom!
the creator jools has made videos about how the “very demure, very mindful” is 100% her dunking on herself and most (if not all) the things she says are not demure are things she has done irl (like wearing lime green eye shadow on her first day of work)
💯💯
Demure most definitely dinnae mean 'hidden' and 'silent'. Demure represents reserved, modest, shy, mature. Or basically, demure. If you grew up with it, no one needs to explain the definition. Proper etiquette would dictate all people behave demurely.
Jamaican girl, here. Same here. Demure is the law for us...lol. In traditional Rastafarian culture, the women STILL do not wear pants in public.
