- Urban development in Turkey has moved rapidly since 2000. This is when the authorities started work to protect old settlements and cultural heritage, but they didn't stop there. Residential areas were tackled as well. This makes residents vulnerable to forced eviction and demolition. The residents of the Ottoman quarter of Tokludede, in Istanbul, were told in 2006 that their quarter would be tackled. They live in fear ever since.
This video is part of the Amnesty International www.SlumStories.org project. An online videochannel about the life in slums in different parts of the world.

Government should help them renovate their houses rather than asking them to evacuate

True, These dilapidated structures are ugly, unsafe and many need restoration to their old glory. But, compassion has to be an integral part of such revivals. Too often, these gentrification projects are to favor the rich and the powerful. Some of the derogatory remarks found in comments section points to the lack of humane view of the problem.
Apart from offering alternative homes to live, let the development companies give these inhabitants preferred stock in the project. If the renovation companies make money, these original owners of the real estate will also benefit.

Same in Pakistan poor people are suffering electricity comes sometimes people have to go far for water, people don't even have clean water to drink. No proper medical care system. Education system is not good, children's have to sit on the floor. People don't have money to pay for their bills. The rich is getting richer and poor people are getting more poor. Politicians are corrupt. Bribery is everywhere. This is why they are desperate to go to Europe for better life, but they go their illegally, and you see what happened in greece the ship drowned and many illegal pakistani immigrants was on their. I know Turkey has taken many immigrants and Turkish people don't like immigrants, because many of them are doing something bad. I feel bad for Turkey, because this is causing crisis in Turkey. God bless Turkey and I hope my country Pakistan can have good relationships with Turkey, because right now it's not good because of illegal immigrants, also Pakistan has to pay so much debt to Turkey, which they haven't done it. these houses are actually cool, if the turkish gov fixes them instead of destroying them ive never been to turkey but the old istambul is very romantic for a tourist i actually like these old wood houses and quarters they are a window into the past

Its is very shameful for me as a Muslim by seeing how my Muslim brothers are yelling against each other. Is this the way you want to prove your point? Talk eachother with a gentle manner. Islam forbids us to yell at eachother even if they are non-muslims.
Now, come to the point. Every country has rich and poor. Poor should be addressed as he has a very small world inside his heart in contrast to those who are richer and always enjoy pizza and juices and dishes on every night. We are Muslims and it is our religious and moral duty to reach to these people and provide them a hand, so they can stand on their feet.
It is the Hadith of Prophet Mohammed s.a.w that you are not believer if your neighbor sleep with hunger and you eat with bellyful.

The government is doing a good job these houses wont even pass OH&S standards the government is giving them large disconts on the house's and in many casses they are getting 2 appartments out out of the whole complex.i know this because my relatives got a really good deal they got 2 apartments and a small shop at the bottom of the complex

I know Turkey is an Islamic country but seems to me to be one of the far less Islamic countries , so much poverty mixed in with the wealthy , each only a matter of metres from one another.Went to Turkey in 20008 , can't say we enjoyed it , a market vendor in Marmaris was trying to force us to buy copepod designer tat from him, we only wanted to buy one item but he starts hurling multiple items into a bin liner which we did not want..upon telling him this HE had the audacity to try to insult is by calling US gypsies! He become all aggressive , not a good impression and we wouldn't return ...especially shaky because of terrors it groups now :(

If people cared about their housing they would maintain it themselves. No one can count on land lords or government to improve living conditions. Aren’t the tenants concerned with insects and mold entering their dwelling? The authorities always come into communities with services that could remove children from homes which is obviously horrific
