Hi steve,im 17 years old and from guyana, which is the only English-speaking country in latin america...your channel is a huge help with my spanish journey
Hello Steve. The listening can trigger the feeling "what does meaning this sound or word" and when I discover what is this meaning I become very happy with that, because "Wow, I'm really learning it". I think that this feeling is very important to keep the motivation in learning a language.
Once again, an excellent video. I really value that you cite so much research. I admit to finding reading very much easier than listening, even in my native English (although I did start listening to unread English classics when lockdown happened, and am definitely getting better). Also, my main drive these days is to read works in the original, rather than to converse. However, I do understand that listening is a crucial skill, and it would enable me to enjoy more content on youtube, so your advice, as so often, is timely.
I just want to appreciate that Steve keeps remind me of importance of basic learning principles It's easy to be inundated by information and lose sense how to learn in this day and age So I am grateful to your diligent work, Steve! Thanks a lot!
Hi Steve. This is exactly my struggle with Irish at the moment. Reading Irish is so difficult. Fighting through it now. Hope to see lingQ get Irish soon.
I believe listening is a good way to get the feel for the language in terms of how it actually works and how people speak. In that sense it could be seen as the baseline that forms our way of communication to the great extent, plus by listening you get to understand spoken language (duuuh 😂) On the other hand, reading can also have an indirect impact on listening in the sense that by reading you come across more difficult and less frequent words: while reading you can get familiar with those words at your own pace, so when you encounter them while listening, they don't seem so foreign and confusing anymore, plus there's no immediate pressure of you having to understand them at the spot. Those two are definitely connected, one reinforces the other and vice versa, and that's why you should definitely use the combination of two. I don't think you always have to do all of them, in other words listening and reading every single day, just pick the activity that seems interesting for the day.
Great info. I shared w my TL study group. The only thing I will add is listening is much more challenging than reading. I can read at my own pace (slow) and feel like I mine info better than when I listen. When I listen I have to keep up with the information flow and no matter how hard I try, things get past me. It’s like being on a treadmill. But who knows what gives the best learning yield? I might ultimately benefit more from reading bc it forces me to focus harder and be in the moment.
I would love a video on exercise and studying. I onlu have limited tome and hsve to choose between thrm because I struggle to listen snd focus whrn i exercise. Sometimes i realise I've stopped paying attention because I'm paying attention to my exercise instead. If you're ever up for it, please share it with us. We can kill two birds with one stone. ❤️✨
Continua escuchando muchísimo cuando ya sepas cada palabra o casi todas entonces comienza poco a poco a nada más escuchar sin poner los subtítulos y poco a poco te irás acostumbrando. A mí me funciona muy bien.
@@Hofer2304 Often you do both. If I'm understanding I suppose that I can ignore a little bit the subtitles, and as soon as I don't get a word I suppose that I focus more on them
If I am listening I also can't focus of i just sit snd do nothing. I have to write notes or as weurd as this sounds adult colouring books. Its become such a s joke that my brother got me an adult colouring book with Spanish swear words in them. I just sit, listen snd colour, it's helpful if i am listening to something for a second or third time. 😅 I don't normally have rude colouring books but it's my brother's sende of humour so I mske the most of it. :)!
The answer to your question regarding the chicken and the egg is answered already. All life evolved from a common ancestor. Thus, any animal's egg came "before" said animal.

If you learn better while exercising, you aren't exercising anywhere near enough. Ride that bike at 90% of max heart rate and try doing some simple math problems in your head.
@@PhantomFellows Yeah, I don't think Steve is suggesting that is easier to learn while doing sprints or heavy weight lifting... he means lighter exercises like walking, jogging, biking, etc. Which are very beneficial for the body without operating at 90% max capacity

My sweet spot is listening while knitting. Keeping my hands busy helps my brain focus and absorb!

The best as always, I agree with everything 🎉🎉
For real, if steve released a non-fiction book about learning languages, i would buy it!
When you are listening do you stop regularly to think, or replay parts, or to look words up? Or do you just listen to everything in one go?
This video is truly rewarding. Thank you very much! ☀️🍀💎

Ooh cool message! I like your thought.
Excellent message, and I completely agree, listening is essential!

Trivially, we love learning languages 'cause how they sounds 😁
For me, listening all the way as main activity!

I only understand well when I listen with subtitles. Could you make a video about how we can improve this problem?

Yeah, that's true ☝🏻🤓
thee chicken came first.. God created 2 of each animal (not eggs)

you missed the point fool
totally agree, although I think zone 2 + some listening isn't the worst!
You don't need to exercise to near exhaustion to get health benefits...
This statement is true in regards to training, not exercising.
