Strange TYCO Locomotive From 1985 - Can We Make it Run?

  • I picked up this 1985 tyco transformers locomotive on eBay a couple years ago and have been waiting to fix it ever since. The engine was originally part of an entire train set tyco sold which included several matching cars, each with a special feature. I suspect this locomotive had been sitting in storage for at least 20 years or more since all metal was quite oxidized.

Look at you Harrison. Transformed a transformer into a runner. Great work as always.

You're a miracle worker to "cheaply" built locomotives. It's junk, until it gets into your hands. I have watched 90% of your videos and it's the "service/discovery" ones that have given me much insight in what I have in my collection. Making locomotives run again, I'm impressed. I'm 53 and have "collected" since I was eight years old. I'm rostering 325 cheap-expensive locomotives. I'm buying the "cheapies" and making them work... "peanut butter" grease is what I've been removing and when it's all put together light and motor run, the words of Frankenstein come to mind: "IT'S ALIVE, IT's Alive!" Thank you. John Kamloops, BC

Thanks for your comment. Many of these locomotives don't need too much to get them going again but as you mentioned after 40 plus years the oils tend to be very dry.

I gotta say, it's kinda clever how Tyco did the shell. The drive also seems nice for a Powertorque. Fascinating little model, and it looks so stereotypically 80's and that just makes it awesome.

It’s amazing the little gems that you can find in this hobby. My sister is actually huge transformers fan, and loves the old cartoons. I flicked this to her and she loved it. Now she is asking me to find it on eBay so I can have it on my layout when she comes to visit.

Nice restoration of that little engine. The sound effects was a great touch as well. Ahh Money for Nothing by Dire Straits. Since this was from 1985 I was thinking that it would have Huey Lewis and the News and a couple Rush songs playing in the background back in that time frame. I actually wish I seen that era it was a different time I think it was better

Pretty neat little locomotive Harrison! Gotta give Tyco credit with the design, simply making a part that just snaps over the shell rather than a complete retool AND the fact that same part can be put on other locomotives of the same type with no modifications, is really ingenious!

SMT - It appears that you do not apply any lubricant on power torque motor armature shaft bearings. Perhaps you should consider using your Labelle needle tip oiler to apply a very small drop that won't get on the commutator & brushes? Seems like there would be some drag with those bearings unlubricated.

I had that very same Santa Fe tyco unit as a kid in the 70's. Have you ever thought about polishing the wheels and contacts instead of grinding them? Grinding leads to abrasions that can hold dirt and cause arcing. I have often thought about getting a couple of those old dogs and kit bashing a center cab from them. Cheers Rob

Watching your videos (and to a far lesser extent, Sam's Trains) has given me a good deal of insight on how to clean and service my old train set locomotives from when I was a kid in the 90's and early 00's. That said, It's also made me realize that I am either going to have to find a servicing guy or get some equipment should I intend to get them going again...
Any plans on doing a video discussing the bare bones of what someone would need to get to Cleaning and servicing? Did I already miss something like that? I don't even have a Soldering Iron...
