As an American I usually don't like to look at strangers faces because I don't want to look at their eyes. I think it makes me seem like I want something from them but I don't.
Every time you just look at a single text message, your dopamine system gets fired up. We're literally weakening our brains hitting the "Refresh" button!! :)

Been doing that the last few days, not super intense but been using my phone allot more. I sort of hate it, it isn't worth it cause you get peanuts for the time spent sitting there, swiping and pushing like some chimp that's expected to get their banana treat after x swipes. 2:30 "stare at phone to avoid other people" Nah, just get some cheap headphones if you want to be left alone. I wouldn't advice getting "Iphone neck" from staring down all the time, besides that you can't really see much in front of you so you might walk into things/people. Just not a good idea, mate.
