Love this album. I still have my original. Fell in love with Band when I heard my older brother bring home their first album. I was about 12. My best friend and I cut school in November 1975 to get tickets. It was just as as the album Night At the Opera was coming out and most people still weren’t turned onto them yet. We got orchestra pit seats at small venue in suburbs of Philly for February 1, 1976, tix were $7.50. Brian May noticed us singing along and let us each chose a song we chose Keep Yourself Alive and Liar. My best friend got Roger’s drumsticks and Freddie gave me a long stem rose. Brilliant show. ✌️♥️🎶
The live version of this track on the Live Killers album takes it to a whole different level - Brian's solo is punctuated by Roger playing timpani drums, but Brian makes the Red Special cry in the second part of this solo, and the use of the 2-3 part delay was absolutely spot on. Not easy at the time as I believe it was a live analogue tape loop, but is now achieved using digital effects, based on an interview with Brian I saw a few years ago.
Sheer Heart Attack almost half a century old and since then there's been countless guitar players and endless technological developments that have basically explored every possible avenue of rock guitar. Back then though, May's playing on Brighton Rock was raw, innovative, exciting and unique. All these years later, he's still one of rock's most outstanding players.
Sheer Heart Attack will always be my favourite Queen album of them all. It's just so versatile in styles and genres. So many creative ideas and song structures. Brighton Rock made me want to play guitar in the first place. Wait til you hear "Flick of the Wrist", one of my all time favourite tracks. This album is all killer no filler. Best cover artwork, best overall performance. So much love for this album. Enjoy the ride.
This was the second Queen song I heard, after Bohemian Rhapsody. I lay on the floor with a speaker on either side of my head and turned it up. I was a Queen fan from that moment in December 1975
Queen , Sparks, Sweet, Roxy Music , Slade , Cockney rebel were all pushing each other in the charts to out gun each other for attention at the time in the UK. Great period for fans to be around .
Brighton Rock - by Brian May John Deacon: Bass Brian May: Backing vocals and electric guitar Freddie Mercury: Lead and backing vocals Roger Taylor: Backing vocals and drums
I bought this album when it came out.......I was 13......I had already started to learn guitar, but this album changed my musical interest and basically I've been rocking ever since.......nearly 50 years old and NO synthesisers were used..... amazing sound .. Still sounds fresh🤟👍👏
I have always thought that this was an interesting opener to this album. Yes, Freddie is doing Jenny and Jimmy so you are right on the vocals. Brian really lights this song up, I love it. Thank you.
Top song, I remember when i first played the vinyl i had to check to see if i had it on the right speed. For this album cover the band members were slathered in Vaseline then hosed down and i think a comment from Freddie was that he quite enjoyed it
"mods" was a label for music fans in the UK at that time - there were "mods" and "rockers" in conflict... I'm sure wikipedia will have all the details...
You just wait until you get to the Live Killers album. Lots of critics said Queen hated it. It was their showcase to everyone who had never had the opportunity to hear them live. Dispite the critics, when I was 13, I thought this was better than Elvis. I love Elvis.
This was why it took me so long to embrace the 'Arena Rock' Queen. This was my first favourite Queen song, when they were more than just Freddie's backing band. They REALLY could rock.
Hi Justin. Love your Queen reaction. Do check out Brian's solo at the 2012 Olympics. It's epic! I notice from your postal address that you are in Florida and hope that you and Camilla are safe.
The nine year old me heard Brian's solo as a train traveling to Brighton. I knew Brighton had Rock, as in the sticks of rock candy. I also knew of the film Brighton Rock, I think I'd seen it with my granddad. He'll have had to explain the full plot line to me, I'm guessing. I know he wouldn't have been allowed to not explain it, I'd have kept on until he told me.
I forget how much I love this album! This one is where they start to experiment with the radio friendly sound that they are in they 1980's. Thanks for doing this.
I loved your introduction, Queen was probably one of the bands that worked the hardest, it was rare to have very long waiting times between albums and at the same time they worked on several other projects such as the first live album which was eagerly awaited, practically to The band's only break from exhaustive recording and touring was before the album The Works, which was extremely necessary to recharge the members for the following years of more extensive productions.
Glad you are doing this album, in my mind its later in the queen chronology because i bought it after Day At The Races and Night At The Opera. Interested to hear your perspective on this album
Although I heard Night at the Opera first I went back to their 1st 3 albums at 15. I was totally inspired by the amazing things May was doing. That's when I stared taking playing guitar seriously. Of course, I had to defend the band from ignorant, homophobic peers in my high school. They probably all love Queen [- the classic rock band - NOW.
Nice! Thanx for more Queen, thought you were maybe moving on, so this is a nice surprise. I know my opinion is in the minority, but I really think you will like News of the World as an album, and would agree that Jazz is a well-done "fun" album (much better than Rush's "fun" album, Roll the Bones)... So, I'm still recommending the fast-forward, since Opera/Races is so well-known, and we've already done some deeper cuts from those two albums on the channel.... I might not get what I want, but Justin you deserve to get what you need - you need to skip ahead to News of the World 😁😗
SHA is when I became aware of Queen. I like "Theatric," over "Glam." Queen has Different dna fr. Mott, or later bands like Poison; musically more progressive, IMHO. Brian May stated that he enjoyed/learned a lot on the Mott tour; different from Freddie's experience. May's guitar work on this album is spectacular, and his iconic tone is evident. Note the robes...I always thought Rush was influenced by Queen in stage costume, but Queen used a designer named Zandra Rhodes and we know Rush's explanation.
I'm not making a request but I was a little surprised that you were not familiar with The Who's Quadrophenia. I really hope you get a chance to check it out sometime. It's a classic and , IMO, it's The Who's best work. It's also the album that they let John Entwistle off the chain on bass the most on so there's that. Be forewarned though..it's a "concept" album (not unlike their earlier double album "Tommy" just 10 times better IMO and way more "Rock" than "Opera"). It's basically a coming of age story about a troubled youth named "Jimmy the mod" set in England during the early to mid 60s when rival gangs of "mods" and "rockers" would fight it out in places like Brighton Beach. During this period The Who were a mod (slang for Modern') band that played mostly American R and B. Somehow The Beatles and Stones slipped past this period in London youth culture without it affecting them much but The Who were caught up in it in their very early years. In Quadrophenia There are recurring themes in the music and most notably there is an atmosphere and just kind of a background feeling of a moody ocean, sky,and rain throughout. For 7os Rock.. it's a "Mount Rushmore" or "deserted island" record. A true classic.
I love this song for a million reasons, but I'll leave the technical convo to other posters. Since you're reviewing some of the catalog, I thought you might be interested in a different big picture arc. If you're familiar with the Queen catalog, you can trace Brian's conflicted love life and relationships through time. It isn't obvious, except in hindsight. There are 2 examples on this album, Brighton Rock and She Makes Me (Stormtrooper in Stilettoes ). Here are a few you've done, and some you might get to in the future. Son and Daughter - confusion and pique from an inexperienced 70s man dealing with a 70s liberated woman. White Queen - Young, bashful, unrequited love and fear of rejection Brighton Rock - hanging out with your pals on holiday and cheating on your girlfriend/wife. What happens in Brighton... She Makes Me (Stormtroopers in Stilettoes) - love is a battlefield - way before Pat Benatar got there Sweet Lady - disenchantment. An argument over expectations. Long Away - Lonliness. Life reflection. A relationship off track. How did I get here? It's Late - a relationship story in 3 parts. It ends in a breakup/divorce. Leaving Home Ain't Easy - Decision time. "I take a step outside and I breathe the air. And I slam the door and I'm on my way." Sail Away Sweet Sister - post- relationship anger and regret. "Maybe you'll find somebody, gonna love you half as much as me." Save Me - May claims this was about Freddie's love life (Freddie had just experienced a break up) but the lyrics are pretty personal. Who Wants to Live Forever - - "...when love must die." I Want it All - a line given to him by his future 2nd wife Anita Dobson, when he was conflicted about the direction of his life and getting divorced. Some artists only write songs about their love life, and I get bored pretty quickly. May managed to do it without becoming a cliché, in fact, many reviewers hear Brian's love life lyrics and attribute them to Freddie.
IMO the main 'song' (the vocal stuff) sounds sort of like if The Who went glam, which make sense given the subject matter. Re: Brian's solo, it's pretty hot. But I feel like a lot of people were messing with delay around this time, Pink Floyd perhaps most famously with "Careful with that Axe Eugene" in 1971. But also things like Steve Miller's "Fly Like an Eagle", etc were floating around back then. My only complaint is I feel like this would have been a better song to open an album if the solo was pared down a little. But this was the age of excess, so it's no biggie.
Yeah, Brian had a rough time there. First Hep A, and it was developing towards gangrene (I understand there was some discussion at the time of possibly losing his arm!), anyway, healed over those issues and then developed a duodenal ulcer. Hospital, hospital, hospital. All the while fearing his bandmates would give him the boot from the band. Of course not! No way! They recorded, making certain to leave room for Brian to come back and add his guitar parts.
lol - check out Roger on this cover - I never noticed it until you mentioned he seems like he wants to be a front-man... it's now obvious from his expression on this cover he's gunning for the spotlight 🧐
Love that we get to go through this ride with you! Hey, you keep bumping into Mott The Hoople. You need get on a bunch of that - great stuff beyond just their hits. And when you hear Mariannette from 1974‘s The Hoople album, you’ll realize where Bohemian Rhapsody came from.
Interesting it sounds like David Bowie and Meatloaf collaboration. Heard a vocal opera there. The words Bohemian and Rhapsody are not in the lyrics of the song.
Love this album. I still have my original. Fell in love with Band when I heard my older brother bring home their first album. I was about 12. “There’s really not that much of a delay.”
Five seconds later. “Oh. Ohhh.” 😂
The live version of this track on the Live Killers album takes it to a whole different level - Brian's solo is punctuated by Roger playing timpani drums, but Brian makes the Red Special cry in the second part of this solo, and the use of the 2-3 part delay was absolutely spot on. yeah they usally had a delay peddle below them

I love how "Baby Driver" introduced a new generation to Queen and this track!
I was 13 when this album came out and me and my friends wore this album out, still brilliant, I never tire of it!!!👍👌✌️😁

Like being washed up on a desert island beach...
My fave Queen song. May kills it.
I have always loved how audacious this song is as far as the structure goes. It was brilliantly used in the movie Baby Driver.👍
This album is a true pearl
So glad your reacting to Sheer Heart Attack my favourite album thank you ❤
Flick Of The Wrist is great!

Yeessss, Sheer Heart Attack !!! Thank you…….
My favourite song to play on guitar🔥
Absolutely totally amazing album all the way through!! Queen rules!!!
Actually my favourite Queen song. Bought this album back when it was released.
That's the perfect thing to do. Just go chronologically, in that way everything will be more interesting.
Exactly ✌🏼
Great reaction video. Keep up the good work thanks
I forget how much I love this album! This one is where they start to experiment with the radio friendly sound that they are in they 1980's. Thanks for doing this.
Thanks for taking the time to give us all the information. It really puts the album in perspective.

Yah. Sad, insecure teenage boys.
Brighton Rock Live front row centre is like experiencing the best sex of you life....Leaving you weak at the knees but wanting more.
You can really hear the clarity and brightness on this album when compared to the previous ones.
this is remastered
@@TONE11111 Yes, but so is Queen II. And in my opinion this recording still sounds so much better.

- love is a battlefield - way before Pat Benatar got there
Sweet Lady - disenchantment.
And I slam the door and I'm on my way."

Do people do 70 vocal overdubs these days?
I would like to know what they are that day🤣😂🤣👌👍✌️😁
👍
