Update. Now that the 15+ Mustangs have been out for awhile. Another option is to take the whole pumpkin off a GT with 3.55 or 3.73 already in it. Junk yards etc. Cheaper and much easier to install.
@@Doomsday410 what about programming for the pcm? The speedo will be incorrect when going to 3.73? There's also an additional Ford Racing "installation kit" which has bearings, shims, and bolts. Is that needed? Link: www.cjponyparts.com/ford-racing-ring-and-pinion-installation-kit-8-8-irs-2015-2019/p/M4210B3/
My man, THANK YOU. You made my dreams come true !! I was looking around forums and TH-cam for hours days even. Stressing. You just made my dream possible I just want you to know that. You have Ana amazing rest of your day and thank you endlessly for the video. You are a true pioneer.
Good job bro!..thanks for doing this vid man..super informative!..my only question now is, if I’m not mistaken, for us automatic guys,..are our housings different in size and if they’re aluminum can we still upgrade the gears the same way?..I know iron is better for the strip but for us daily drivers that just wanna bump performance up a bit and not necessarily be jumping from 300 to 650hp lol..can this same gear and diff swap be done safely without risk of the housing ears snapping
aLAvon Major if you check the gears link below the video. There is a description section and a link for fitment. It shows all models and no mention of only manual or automatic. Also a quick scan of the Q&A section has some guys with autos asking what they need etc. AM staff replying with just the gears it looks like. Might be worth a quick chat with them to verify but I don’t see anything saying manuals only.
Purchased Diff, gears and bearing kit and Ford will install in a,couple weeks. They hook up to my PCM to see about calibration on speedo. Come to find out no matter what they can't. The newer models of Mustang if your car came with 3.15 there is NO option for calibration. So just making sure if Ford couldn't the tuner still can. Just making sure.
Ricky Rott Ford won’t do anything that wasn’t a factory option. The best you could get from the factory on these was a 3.55 gear ratio which is why they won’t calibrate for the 3.73 gears. An SCT or other brand tuner will do the trick.
If I get these 3.73 gears and differential, would I need to buy the ring and pinion installation kit and the 8.8 in. IRS rear axle bearing & seal kit from AM? Or everything would be reused ?
Oscar Really would depend. If you’re car is super low mileage you might be able to reuse. Otherwise you’d need it. If you’re having a pro install it I’d ask them what they think. My installer carries those and I got it a lot cheaper than AM.
Do you also need the ring and pinion installation kit or just these two items? The shop I asked said I would need the install kit and also they quoted $800 for labor. So I'm looking at $1300 to do this gear swap, do you really think it makes that big of a difference? Seems like most 3.7 owners who say the gears are best bang for buck are s197 owners who get the parts and labor done for $500 total.
If you're staying NA then a tune and gears should be your first two mods hands down. I see people spend more than that buying shorties, cai, and a throttle body. That combination does very little and will cost you more money with labor. If you're going boost, especially turbo probably not. I never thought I'd have the opportunity to pro charge my car back when I got the gears. You can bang out some great times with boost and 3.15s. That being said I'm glad I have them. I have to run the 1/8 most of the time where I live which means I need to get in boost quick to cut a good time. My 3.73s do the trick. Install kit is up to your installer really. Some guys will say no need with real low miles. I think they're less than 100 bucks if memory serves.
Is it possible that my 2016 3.7 has 3.31 from the factory? The label on the door has the marking for 3.31 but I never see anyone mention it. Awesome videos by the way.
TheUsmc913 Don’t quote me on this cause my memory could be off. But I think you could order one with 3.31 but the ones already at the dealership lots were 99% 3.15s. Thanks btw!
Travis Willoughby I’m not positive but I think they’re for the 5.0. What are you trying to accomplish? Several of us run Deatchwerks 65lb injectors made for our cars which is about 700cc. Great for boost and e85 compatible.
Christian Gilbert The shop I used carried all the conversion parts they don’t come with the gears. AM sells those as a kit I believe though. As far as the warranty I’m not sure but probably. The housing is the same so without careful inspection I’m not sure the dealer would even notice and I’m not telling them 😂
What about the IRS ring and pinion install kit? Did you replace old kit? With 700 miles on my 17 I wonder if I need the kit. I got the gears and differential last night from LMR. Trying to figure out if I need the ring and pinion install kit.
Emmanuel just the carrier bearings, fluid, and additives per my installers recommendation (he keeps conversion parts in stock). I think the full kit is typically for higher mileage vehicles. I’d check with your installer to see what they think.
CHINO AN7RAX Install kit is a good idea and doesn’t cost much. I just pinned a comment above to another cheaper option to upgrade your gears if you can find one.
greyghost3.7 I understand getting a tune but I have 3000 miles on a 1000,000 6 year warranty that I was told by ford if I hook up a turner I will void warranty. They will install gears but tell me they can't fix speedo.
Ricky Rott I have the same bumper to bumper warranty. They can’t just “void” your warranty that’s illegal. Check the link below for more detail on the laws that protect consumers and their warranties. The dealership would have to prove that a particular mod caused the failure to refuse warranty repair. I just flash my car back to the stock tune when I take it in for service. www.autoanything.com/popups/MossWarranty.aspx At the end of the day I just decided to take the risk on some of my mods. I won’t have the car forever and I wanted to “make it my own”.
Ricky Rott I think once you change the speedo you’ve technically “flashed” it from stock. At that point you might as well throw a tune in too. Really just do what you think is best. I just like to share what I’ve done or am doing. I’m by no means a mechanic or a lawyer lol. I’m just a regular knuckle head who loves Mustangs and mods 😎
Bryant Espinoza yeah you shouldn’t have any issues there. I paid 650 for labor. Considering they have to do the differential as well it’s a little higher than just a gear swap.
@@Doomsday410 I appreciate the response, just trying to quantify the gains of a gear swap, its not that expensive but I cant figure out if its worth it vs tuning the ecoboost.
Iron Reed If you’re staying stock boost levels I’d say 100% it’s worth it but tune it first. I say that because with most handheld tuners like an SCTX4 you can adjust for the new gears after you install them. If you’re going to up the boost I’d leave the stock gears. I didn’t know I was going to boost the car when I got the gears. The 3.73’s were borderline too aggressive once I went boost. I was manual though. If you’re auto maybe it’s not as bad but you’d probably still be ok with a 3.15 or 3.31. If I could go back I probably would’ve left the 3.15’s.
I went on AM and the guy told me all I need is the install kit and the gears do I also need the irs slip for 180 bucks more I’m confused, can anyone let me know thanks
PVKLoL I’d say to get a single piece at some point. The GT comes with a factory 3.73 option and the same two piece and there are a lot of forums where people are having drive shaft vibration/noise etc. A single piece is my next mod. My mechanic said if I’m going to keep adding power he’d “strongly advise” installing a single piece. That was enough for me lol
Emmanuel I’d say it depends on whether you drive through heavy traffic frequently. The 3.73s have great drive ability IMO. When I had 4.10s years ago they sucked in traffic and 1st gear was almost useless lol.
SON OF A BITCH LOL, so glad I didn't buy that this summer and went with my BBK LT Headers & Borla Stingers Catback... American Muscle still hasn't updated it from GT to All or V6, Ecoboost. So those are the only two things I need plus labour costs? - Why are they charging $1800 for it there must be some kind of advantages.
Kernal29 I can’t say what the advantage is really. If you watch the AM video about the 1800 version he even says not recommended for the drag strip. They didn’t update their link but they should. I just added the ford link in the description to the same part number M-4204-M. Ford lists it for the GT,V6, and ecoboost.
greyghost3.7 Pefect, thanks for clarification man! They really should update that, isn't that kind of misleading your own customers on AMs part? Shake my head lol
Nicholas Paladini very informative. from what I gather it looks like the Torsen may be preferable for road/track racing but not so much the drag strip. thanks for the info!

Are the cakes different? Splines? Straight pumpkin swap that’s it??
TheReal NateDogg Correct just a straight pumpkin swap. The S550 V8 and V6 have the same 8.8 rear and the same spline count.
