I live an hour's drive from Chicago and have been in the Art Institute more times than I can remember. It was only on this last visit where I attended a lecture that I noticed this plaque that said, "On this location in 1893 Swami Vivekananda delivered his speech to the World Parliament of Religions." I heard about this event in history and only a few years before had I been introduced to him and Sri Ramakrishna. Sometimes we read about history, but it doesn't seem real or it exists as abstraction until it is touched.

There was one American aristocrat (Mrs. Hale) who took pity on Vivekananda on the night of September 10, 1893 when he was shivering and homeless the day before his great speech to the Parliament of Religions. He hadn't properly planned his expenses on the long voyage from India and across the Eastern USA. She saw him from her window sitting across the street on Dearborn Avenue and invited him into her home. It would later become his HQ in Chicago. Swami Vivekenanda was forever grateful to the Hale family for their kindness and generosity in his time of need. He would later write to them more than to any other Westerners but one.

The Video says: After Swamiji's opening address and saying, "Sisters and Brothers of American, he received thunderous applause from the crowd of 7,000 people." In it, he records not only the speeches in the order they were given, but often the audience reaction as well.
