I am a 100% disabled vet. In my experience, I have found that clinical staff members are excellent, but the bureaucracy is absolutely horrible. The hospitals are understaffed with medical staff in all disciplines. I've heard that primary care physicians in the VA are assigned excessive numbers of patients. The mental health clinic cannot keep pace with needs.
My wife and I are seeing the same, she’s 100% with PTSD and Nuero issues, I’m 60% with respiratory and digestive issues. During DJT’s tenure, when the employees were afraid of being canned the receptionists and schedulers actually did pretty well. As soon as this mess came in, almost a 180 degree turn. I’m my wife’s caregiver since she can’t really go out in public without freezing up thanks to the PTSD, and we were told 2, maybe 3 years ago that the qualifications for the caregiver program were going to change, basically unless the vet was a stump, there was going to be no caregiver support. I guess there was so much pushback that idea got shelved.

The day after my shot, the injection site was hot, hard and red. The military doc that saw it knew immediately what it was and was able to treat it, plus enter in my records that no more vaccines for me. She happened to be the chief of allergies at the Travis AFB hospital, and told me that the civilian world wouldn’t have had an understanding of how to treat it. Military people are different that pure civilian. We see the world differently, and are generally uncomfortable around new people, especially if they haven’t been in our world. It’s not that we’re special, but our life experiences are, and most of the civilian sector doesn’t understand, and we can’t expect them to. When I, or my wife, have to go to a civilian medical (ER, urgent care, tests, imaging, that kind of thing), we have to explain our conditions, and quite often the folks just don’t get it. It is getting better, somewhat, and depends where you are.

Took me almost two years to get a primary care during Obama's policy changes that affected the apprenticeship school. Took me another six months to get one when I moved to another state. My friends in the military tell me they got screwed in similar ways. Pending pre-existing by default. Almost lost my leg working for the city and it's never been the same.
VA health care since the current administration has been in charge has gone down. My father and uncle experiences have been terrible. Their appointments are made, a short time later the appointments are cancelled via email. Now many people who were born during 40-60’s do not check their emails often.
They also love to deny you have a condition caused by their negligence, and fail to address it even when you show evidence, resident drs only there to deflect your findings to mis interpret the reality of a condition getting worse. Please change the current leadership 😢
