The story that Bruce Campbell tells is that Sam Raime wrote the, "Give me some sugar, baby" line on the spot while doubling over with the giggles since he was going to make his friend say that in a major motion picture.
I saw this in the theater at 12 years old and thought it was the greatest movie I'd ever seen. Now, in my 40s I still think it was great and you all should be ashamed of yourselves. Great movies don't always have to be great art, just great fun. Stop ruining my childhood. Who do you think you are? Disney???
I remember being a kid and thinking Evil Dead 2 was the greatest movie ever, only to see the trailer for Army of Darkness on tv and completely losing my shit in the living room. My brothers took me to a midnight screening of it and it was everything I wanted and more.
As far as Ash getting dumber each time on film.....he has taken ALOT of head injuries & PTSD. That why in the show the continuity makes sense ...it all happened to Ash, the movies, video game; even the one where he played poker with Brock Sampson. The drugs, head trama , time travel just makes it a little foggy.
@Skynet1 Yup, he's referencing Poker Night at the Inventory 2. That table was Ash Williams, Brock Sampson, Sam (Sam and Max) and Claptrap. Also in attendance around the Inventory were Mad Moxxi, Glados, Steve and Max.
I saw this opening night in a packed theater and I had no clue it was part of the Evil Dead franchise until it started. It was a fun experience because most of the crowd were fans, so there was a lot of whooping and hollering. It was more like watching a football game than a movie. I was in Michigan at the time so the place just erupted at the "boomstick" scene. That was the last time I remember going to a movie where everyone stood up and clapped at the end.
My dad rented it when I was going through my Evil Dead phase and I was clueless it was the third movie. I was heartbroken when he told me after returning the video.
My buddy and I loved ED 1 and 2 and we also saw this in the theater. We were not disappointed. I had to order the VHS when it came out because none of the rental places had it.
When I saw the 'South Park' movie in the theater we had such a crowd. We were singing along and clapping, quoting and cheering - it was so much fun. I think the only experience I've had at a movie to top it was when I camped out 3 days for 'Phantom Menace' (3 days alongside other superfans; singing the Ewok song and debating the morality of Han Solo).
Army of Darkness is a true gem. So quotable, full of laughs and b-movie-esque charm, and extremely re-watchable like few other movies can say… it somehow defines a real part of the male personality that just makes sense. Personally I put it right up there with the Big Lebowski and Monty Python and the Holy Grail. “Yeahhhh Baby!”
Although the Holy Grail is obviously a comedy classic, I don't find it to be nearly as funny as I did when I was in middle and high school. A lot of the jokes just don't hold up for me in my old age. And I've always hated it when one person quotes a line from that movie it's inevitable that 1 or 2 other people will respond in kind with a different line from the movie, which prompts the 1st person to keep it going with another quote, and they all laugh and mention how much they love the movie. I don't know why, but that has always irritated me.
@@Tom_Van_Zandt You should really see 'Spamalot' on stage if you want to rekindle that fun you had as a child. I saw it with friends when I was in my early 30s and we all loved it - it isn't just a rehash of 'Holy Grail' as I had feared it would be.
they’re here shitting on the movie. not saying they’re wrong, because they’re totally right. but everything they’re saying is exactly why i LOVE about this movie
"The original ending is more appropriate for Ash as a character" So true. Ash is defined as the (unlikely) hero who, just as everything seems to be coming together, loses big time and the end of his movies. That's one of the things that made the Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness so unique at their time (nowadays it's a bit of a trope but at the time it really wasn't). Still love these movies - each in a totally different way.
6:37 Mike is trying to say the Scene in Monty Python's Holy Grail where the old man asks 3 riddles to get across the bridge, and Jay thinks he's talking about the Black Knight scene... Lol
Saw this on the big screen recently with Bruce Campbell on stage giving the behind the scenes scoop and talking mad shit on the movie. He's even more over the top in real life than his character is in the movies. Absolute legend
Horror and Action separated by a single thin line That line breaks when one particular element is added The Badass Badasses have no fear, have no hesitations, and show no mercy They can bleed, but ain't got time to, that large monster is running amuck and needs to be BEATEN He can be a scientist, an architect, a painter, a cook, a wild man, or even a gardener, and go on an adventure to thwart the plots of overlords, dragons, demons, and despots Ash is a Stockboy who experienced the dark underworld, and though feels personally responsible for unleashing Hell, will fight back to avenge his friends, and his severed hand
I was 4 years old when I first saw this movie, and seeing those little Ashes, then one of them literally growing out of his body scared the living piss out of 4 year old me. Its funny as hell now. LMAO
Army of darkness is amazing. What are you talking about when you say how bad it is? All of the bad cuts, special effects, continuity issues, cheesy lines, etc etc. It's all done purposefully.
My buddy and I just watched this movie with Bruce Campbell on Saturday at winnipeg comic con. It was my friends first time seeing army of darkness and he loved the movie, laughed the whole time.
Critiquing Evil Dead as if it is in the same category of any other film... It is a spiritual successor to 40's ,50's and 60's movies like Danny Kay, Jerry Lewis, or 3 Stooges.
I did not know about the alternative ending, which I love. Ash fighting in the future apocalypse sounds awesome. I actually paid full price to see Army of Darkness in the theater and I don't regret it at all.
When I was a kid I used to always listen to casette tapes while falling asleep. Some of them I recorded myself. And on one tape I had for some reason recorded the audio of this movie. I listened to it every night for who knows how long. So I couldn’t just *quote* the movie, I could 100% recite it. Can you beat that?
I saw this in the theater and loved it. There used to be a scene or two more with the army, where you see nazi skeletons, but they seem to have cut it out later. You have to go into this accepting that it'll be cheesy and silly so your critical mind isn't too worried about the idiocy.
There was a mobile castle defense game made with sound bites from this movie. Great little sound clips like that "You can count on my steel, and I'll bend my bow for you."
I love the Evil Dead movies for all their demented batshit lunacy, and that includes this one. The first was pure horror. The second horror-comedy, and then this was straight up comedy. It's just glorious. This movie plus some beers and mebbe a pizza, good night.
I saw it in theaters. And as things went on with Ash's trauma while going to fetch the book, I leaned over and asked my friend "and now, what were those three words?" I had never actually seen that movie where " klatu, verat, niktu "
The MPAA rated this movie R because they wanted to get back at Sam Raimi for dodging around the ratings board and releasing Evil Dead 2 without submitting it to them.
There is no doubt that this movie is very, very flawed in really obvious, basic ways (the entire plot is just broken for example). There is also no doubt that overall it's great fun and has some truly iconic, memorable moments which elevate it far above many movies with far less obvious flaws. You just have to take the rough with the smooth, it's a great movie.
I think you mean BEST MOVIE EVER MADE. This is like, what if some hysterically funny and talented people decided to make a B-movie on a shoestring budget. It's a classic.

Ash is socially dumb. He is an engineering wiz considering he fixed his car with Middle Ages tech.

Considering how their Gremlin's been looking lately, I think it's a good thing Tom Sullivan didn't give Mike the skull page.
