You needed a amount of points in the skill to activate it, and you could have steps in the skills (for a better skill). You also could have negative skills, and decoration to put in you armor pieces (if the piece had a slot, or 2, or 3) to increase skills points (and every decoration had at least one negative point in a skill).

Example was handicraft and sharpness where a piece would give +3 handicraft but -5 sharpness. If you had enough negative levels things became funny as you were penalized with bad skills. Monsters don't need insurance, look at Daimyo Hermitaur and Shogun Ceanataur : when they have their shell broken by hunters they just find another one. See? No need for homeowner's insurance.
The only strange thing I've had happen so far is I joined a hunt, and as soon as I got into the quest the monster was already flashing and could be capped. As I was running out of camp I got a connection error, and the other three players just vanished.....suddenly I was alone. Proceeded to just walk over, cap the by then sleeping monster, check a hunt off the list and collected full rewards. Nice
To avoid sharpening interruptions hop on your pallamute and sharpen on the go. It makes you harder to hit and you can reposition yourself to head back into the fight
I've on some occasions harvested the livers from those wild goat things and they still walk away just fine. Truly resilient creatures. But seriously it's so nice to have an actual game that runs well from the get-go.
I think this was because some people didn't like the fact that Kelbis could die (they thought they're too cute) so instead they made it so they get back up and escape. Kinda like the Melynx and Felynes.
