All those applauding Gary Neville might want to remember that he has earned money from the Glazer regime during his playing career and from the likes of Rupert Murdoch in his role at Sky. His blindness to his own hypocrisy is staggering. I'm a United fan but I also supported my local teams as I've moved round the country over the years and I do believe smaller clubs need a voice but football is business. You can't agree with his disdain for Chelsea but then shop at Tesco, fill your car at Esso, buy your furniture from IKEA etc etc when these big companies ruthlessly swallowed up independent businesses and corner shops. The elite PL clubs are greedy monopolists but you can't sit there bleating that on a network like Sky TV. Blatant hypocrisy, from which he's made millions!

It's good that his thoughts have progressed, but it's going to blow his mind when he realises how much further his train of thought could go - that sport is just the tip of the iceberg. That the likes of the Saudi PIF and the UAE equivalent own significant holdings in companies that touch every single part of his life - power, fuel, food, energy, transport, manufacturers, hotels, entertainment, technology, raw materials, etc, etc, etc, all on the list of significant directly owned shareholdings. Then they also invest in investment firms like Berkshire Hathaway, which in turn invest in even more companies, and banks like Citi which trade in other company's shares too.
Eventually he'll realise there's a fair chance that these Sovereign Wealth Funds are (one or two levels removed perhaps, so opaquely) investing in, so owning a part of, Sky Sports. Not sure what his response to that would be, resigning maybe, but probably not tbh. I'd guess he just carries on with his life like everyone else, because it's actually pretty much impossible to even understand how far the tentacles of these Wealth Funds are spread, never mind attempting to exist without consuming stuff from any of the companies they are significantly invested in - which anyone can google if they wanted to take a stand, but I have never come across a single person who even suggests they do.

I agree with Carra's comments. Gerrard mentions it in his biography and goes in more detail of Chelsea's impact on the league, Wenger mentions the Ashley Cole situation in his biography. And even Patrick Barclay's biography on Jose Mourinho mentions the Sven incident. Roman completely changed Chelsea.
But to be fair, I think this is normal in football. Taking full advantage. Olympiacos have done this over the years in Greece, Bayern does this, Juventus got taken apart when relegated and took other players in the league when back on top, Real Madrid are renowned for this. That's just how it is. That's why it's the same group of clubs who tend to win the leagues and champions league. Very difficult to win the big prizes unless you're backed by very rich owners.

That's just not true though is it? Chelsea fans were ridiculed for having an owner that was injecting oil money into the game, was sportswashing and the fans were plastic or glory hunters. That only died down when City took the mantle and the attention shifted to them. Up until the Ukraine crisis they got the same stick. Most football fans have always stood fiercely against large injections of cash from wealthy individuals into the game. It was only ever the Chelsea and City fans who didn't care because it obviously benefitted them. Fans have always stood against it but the government has always ignored the criticisms because football has been a huge source of FDI for the UK in recent decades. Only now that they have to impose sanctions on Russian oligarchs are they paying attention to "oil/blood money" as a whole because the media has increased their scrutiny on it. Point is, stop being a victim saying you were in the minority against Abramovich. Most fans have always been against it but it took an important global political event to bring it under scrutiny.

I think any football club over a certain age should automatically be given a new Community Asset status which would mean that people or companies can only buy the Stewardship of a club but never truly own it. There would be a process for the local community and fans (and an independent regulator) to oust them when necessary. In addition to the fit & proper test, a code of conduct to follow with certain violations essentially costing them steward/ownership instantly and without recompense.
These club are institutions and not just like any other businesses. Their legal status needs to reflect this and also serve to keep their stewards in line.

When they won in 2016, they did so with a starting 11 that included 8 players who joined at the youngest age group possible (plus 2 from U11's, 1 from U14) and were coached by someone who had done just that a decade earlier himself.

Of Course, Chelsea could've signed Jerome Sinclair, Caoimhin Kelleher, Rhian Brewster, Bobby Adekanye, Yan Chanda, Madger Gomes,, Pedro Chirivella, Rafa Camacho, Sergi Canos, Sheyi Ojo, and Liam Millar and more and won nothing. The excuse that well we only get money from them is pretty poor when you’re talking about regimes that oppress and exploit their own populations and engage in wars killing tens of thousands of innocent people. The employees of these clubs players and managers are in the public eye and absolutely should be asked questions about who’s paying them. A independent regulator in football is well overdue! For too long now shady owners and business people have been able to hide behind football and exploit the fans for their own gain! Whether that gain is financial or in reputation.

I have no issue with other clubs trying to take adavantage of Chelsea, everyone would do this.
I have an issue with how the UK gov is punishing the football club a lot more than Abramowitch himself!
Abramowich was literally in the process of selling the club, they could have just insured he doesnt get the money from the sale... They could control the major transactions of the club to ensure that the money doesnt end up with Abramowitch etc. Instead they prohibit the sale of the club and thus prohibit that the situation is getting resolved!
Do they honestly believe that selling tickets/jerseys is furthering Russias war effort?!
