Cool vid. So... when I was 18-19 years old in 1980-1981 , I worked as an apprentice for a old timer who had a 3 man auto repair shop. The old timer was a old tech wizard and he knew Q jets inside and out. He did not believe in jb weld or epoxy at all on these, he said anyone who " fixes " them that way was an " asshole ".... The old timer had actual Carter / Rochester Q jet parts he stocked and there were OEM plugs and he had punches he bought as factory correct tools . The old timer showed me how to rebuild Q jets.... take em apart in the afternoon, of course with a couple shots of vodka , soak them overnight in the nasty bucket of stuff you probably cannot even buy today, put em back together with a couple cups of coffee in the morning. I miss the old guy, he was awesome man, showed me how to adjust points, how to tune / rebuild distributors , carbs , starters, alternators..... This vid reminds me of the mentality of the past.... much respect.
Ive only had one problem doin it that way in a good 70 carbs . Nail was little fat . When i popped the plug out it nicked the side of the well wher the plug came out . Dont use any fatter or bigger nail than you need . One outta 70 thats what about 95 percent success rate ? Be safe brother ! Thanx fr checkin out my channel !
@@earleclemans4836 hate ta burst yr bubble but thats exactly how the chevy dealer did it ! Bench grinder a nail and a 3 lb hammer ! My dad worked ther fr 25 years !
@@earleclemans4836 ben doin fr 42 years now my self ! Never had a problem . Probably done it , , , 40 , 50 times ! To each ther own . Takes 10 mins permanent fix !
This is the fourth video I have watched today on the subject and the first one that looks like a legit long term fix. Thanks so much I'll be hunting down that plug kit riiiiiiight now. Also it's incredible that TH-cam hasn't popped you for the music in the background 🤣
been looking forever for a good fix, have one on my boat , it sets for a day and the bowl is empty , have to turn over for a minute before firing up. hope carquest has them.
a very good video! I need some advice on something. I recently bought a 1986 chevy truck with a V6 4.3. It has a propane system on it and the original carburetor is no where to be found. I have a 78 quadra jet that I just rebuilt and would like to install it. the truck intake manifold is the original spreadbore quadrajet carburetor. Also this engine has the electronic spark control distributor without the vaccum advance. if I put this 78 carb I got on it do you think it will work just fine?
Greatly depends on what the q jet is off of ? Run the numbers off the side of the bowl section ! Should be like 1705 starting with that . If the q jet was off something small 350 or smaller . You can probably tweak it lean enough fr the v6
They ve quit making the plugs ive found out . I just tried to help someone else find some . You ll have to pop the plugs out how i show in the video . And the n tap the holes . And plug them 🙄
I am not surprised there's no more plugs, given Carbs went away 30+ years ago. Tapping does not sound better than epoxy. What epoxy to try? Steel Putty, JB Weld, Marine Tex @@theweldor757

And to be honest after welding for almost 40 years now . Im seriously considering just prepping the wells . And just resoldering them with some low temp solder . Ive never herd of a well kit in a thermoquad . But ive only seen 3 or 4 of those my whole life . The cpl i seen running seemed like they ran good ! But they had warpage issues was what i always herd . Love my spreadbore q jets though ! Take a q jet over anything ! Sorry i dont have a answer for you brother ! Be safe !
@@LaPabst any time brother ! Hit me if ya need more help ! The only problem the well plugs create is you ll go in to a store . Come out 20 mins later and yr motor is flooded . Gotta crank on it fr 5 seconds !
Did a little research . Didnt find any input on primary plugs like the secondary ones . Being a weldor though i know they make a low temp melting aluminum brazing rod . Id probably dismantle the carb . Prep the area real well ! Sand paper maybe , what ever it takes . See if a guy could cover the area with some aluminum brazing rod . Hot/cold hot/cold hot cold n through the years the factory solder cracks is why they leak . That would be my approach to it . Ive seen guys drill em out n tap em . But if yr off center or booger it up . Then yr kinda screwed !
@@theweldor757 yes, I mis-spoke they are under the main (removable) jets. You said you'd only seen them leak once in 70 jobs. Your idea kinda is what I was thinking. I have a lot of recent ads for aluminum welding.

Only thing that can go wrong is if they sit dry fr a cpl years the o ring can dry rot . Nice mug shot !

Summit has the secondary well plug kit but hell they want 60.00 for it

This is the same way they suggested plugging them in the 70's from the service bulletin that GM supplied.

I cannot find these kits anywhere. Can you post where you got em. I just put silicone on em and havent had a problem. Id like to try this method.
