Leak-Proof Quadrajet Well Plugs

  • According to the manufacturer and Quadrajet experts, four-barrel carburetors built before 1975 had leaking primary and secondary well plugs (plus a couple of other spots).
    The best way to take care of this issue is with fuel-impervious epoxy or, ideally, with mechanical plugs.
    I have had excellent results using epoxy in the past. But set screws for the primary wells and new aluminum plugs with O-rings for the secondary wells are the better, long-term option.
    This video shows how I installed 10-32 set screws for the primary wells after drilling out the factory plugs. The best time to do this upgrade or repair is during a complete carburetor rebuild.
    I hope you find this video helpful.
    Thank you for watching! 🙂👍🏻

    JB weld over the plugs has always done well for me

    I've been building carburetors since I was 16 at quality Chevrolet when I was a tech always pull them well plugs because there's crud inside there no matter how long you soak that carburetor

    man, that's an amazing fix on those small plugs I'm going to do mine like that now that I've seen you do it.

      Thanks and good luck! They work great. You can also epoxy the threads if you want, but use Marine Epoxy. 😊👍🏻

    Great video, thanks for demo. Will start mine tomorrow. What thread sealer did you use. not aware of any gas proof ones. was going to use JB weld, its fuel resistant. Thanks

      I think I used a gas-resistant thread sealer paste by Permatex, amzn.to/3YKP24D
      But the JB Weld you already have should also work fine. 😊👍🏻

    I need to pick me up some of that tank weld to seal up my secondary plug wells on my vette 👍🏻

      1705 Quadrajet carburetors did not really have leaky wells.
      From what I’ve read, it’s kind of rare.
      704 and earlier Qjets are prone to develop well leaks.

      Did it work? I’ve seen plugs threaded in by others but they always leaked after a while too.

    How deep can these plugs go before they impede the flow of fuel?

    • @76vette
      @76vette  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I would not use plugs or set screws longer than the original plugs you remove. Also, use marine-grade epoxy to seal the threads. 😊👍🏻

    I'm about to do my primary plugs. DO you think red loctite 271 would work well for the set screws? I read its ethanol and fuel resistant. I'm not so sold on JB I'm reading allot of them leak eventually. Maybe Marine Tex is better? I haven't read about people using Loctite red 271 yet.

      @76vette  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I used Permatex thread sealer which is also fuel resistant. I like to have the ability to remove the plugs if necessary. Not sure if red Loctite would work. Sorry.

    Hello, I followed your instructions and ordered all the products to repair the primary well plugs but mine still leak after following all your steps. The sealant looks blue in the link that you left compare to the white you use? What would you advise to get this leak repaired? Thanks

      Use marine epoxy to seal the threads. That should do it. 😊👍🏻

    How do you test to see if the well plugs are leaking?

    • @76vette
      @76vette  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I test them with the carb on the bench. I pour gas, or alcohol, or paint thinner into the bowl and allow it to sit for an hour or so. If the well plugs are leaking the fuel level will go down and the well plugs will be wet.
