Till Lindemann is not a rock star. He is a poet, like his father Werner, who wrote children's books. His parents divorced and he went to live with his father who, however, had problems with alcohol. His life has been a disaster, and he sings about disasters. Violence, abuse, perversions, taboos of our modern society. He sings in the first-person because in this way the lyrics are more immediate for the public, while in the third-person it would be like distancing himself from what he says, talking about deviant people and attributing all the blame to them. For Lindemann this would be a kind of "cowardice". His baritone voice is made deliberately hoarse, he adopts the "Sprechstimme" technique which dates back to the works of Richard Wagner. Often the texts (of which he is the sole author) are deliberately ambiguous, to stimulate reasoning, research and considerations on the part of the listeners. In my opinion, Till Lindemann is a modern post-industrial poet, in search of his own musical language capable of conveying the drama of the topics he talks about.
