It is amazing he was able to come in and play the way he did with such a long layoff, and when he retired, he was at the top of his game. Staubach accomplished all of this after serving 4 years in the military and not becoming a full-time starter until he was 29 years old. IMO, if Staubach came into the league as a 22 year old rookie, the Cowboys would have had at least 1 more Lombardi Trophy and Roger would have been in the discussion as THE greatest QB in NFL history.
If he didn't serve 4 years in the Navy, he would have been just another NFL quarterback. His service made him who he is. A loyal person. A trusted individual. A leader....and a million other positive adjectives.

He retired only because the Drs said that if he was concussed again, that he may never recover from it. Meaning, that he might have become a permanent mental vegetable. As good as he was... at 35 things go downhill pretty fast. Danny White was no Roger but was likely better than Roger would have been at that point. The Cowboys were still real good for the first half of the 80's with Danny White.

My dad the late Salvatore Blumette took me to see the Dallas Cowboys against the Philadelphia Eagles in Philly when I was about 10 years old. I was so impressed by Coach Landry team and the play of their QB back then Danny Don Meredith with the great wide receiver Bob Hayes. It truly inspired me to become a football coach when I grew up. And now I been doing for the past 25 years as a college, high school and Junior High football Coach. And not quite ready to retire yet!
If the Cowboys had picked up Warren Moon, they would have had more Super Bowls than anyone else by far! It would have been perfect timing as Roger was retiring the following year. It is an amazing fact to understand that in the same year Earl Campbell was drafted, Warren Moon went UNDRAFTED!

Landry isn't given enough recognition to what he brought to the NFL and which is still being used today. Staubach for me was the best Cowboy QB. Aikman 2nd. Danny White 3rd for atleast bringing us to 3 NFC championship games in a row.

Roger got two rings. Made me a little kid football fan when they stomped Miami and got that 2nd dominating Denver.
