What's your to-do list app of choice?
We are firmly in the MS word at work and I am starting to use Planner and To Do - I like the automation with both outlook and Planner and I can see what task I need to do in one single spot. I will experiment some more but it might just the work solution I need.

I'm trying Things now. TickTick's UI for me is so bad that I managed to use the app for 5 min, then I had to uninstall 😅. I'm happy that I can stay within Apple's ecosystem. 🥳
I've been a 2Do user for many many years.
I've been a heavy TickTick user for about 6 years now. I don't mind paying because of the extra features and the way they continue to release features is amazing.
I am very happy with the macOs reminder app. It integrates seamlessly with the OS, collaborates with other apps, and syncs data with iPadOs/iOs. That's all I need. The app has improved a lot with the past macOs versions and is underrated by many users.
Yes keep it simple direct and to the point. No need to complicate things and move on with your life.
It handles sub tasks really badly
Agreed...it misses a few bells,but since it's so integrated...you honestly can't escape the reminder from "reminders'... it's almost not slick enough, but it's very functional...maybe a UI/UX redesign in the future might be wise.
It might work for people with only a few things they need to keep track of, but for most people reminders isn't enough. I don't know if I'd call myself a 'power user' - but I certainly need MUCH more from an app to manage my life than Reminders provides.
Fan boy!... seriously, it's the least 'good' of many better options, but it does work for you and if you live in Mac ecosystem then sure, it's a great solution. And you're not spending any extra money$$
I don't really understand why people don't like the design of TickTick, I absolutely love the design. I think I prefer it more than most apps
Expectations for to do apps do vary so much between users and their particular needs. I loved Things but had a few frustrations. I am not cross platform but after a brief flirtation with Good Task (which is built on top of Reminders) I have found that Tick Tick really hits the sweet spot for me! I love using the Themes too. I am not against subscriptions but they do focus the mind and mean that I am very focussed about what apps I use. Previously I might just have brought an app to try it out - but not when a sub is involved!
Glad it works for you! What keeps me in Things is the clear differentiation between the "when" I intend to do a task and the "when" a task is due. I didn't see a clear way of doing this in Tick Tick when I tried it a year ago so I skipped it. I often defer tasks or projects to a specific date so I can start working on them, but they are not really due that date so having that option inside Things 3 was fantastic.

i have this issue as well. It's actually available on Microsoft To-Do with its My Day feature. But this app lacks many features compared to TickTick.

This is what I use for more than a year now. Very happy. It’s in all of my devices - iPhones, Android, iPad, Macs and I use the web version in my work laptop. I can’t imagine life without TickTick!

Ive commented this on another video already but since you asked about a writing alternative to Ulysses here, chiming in again for Obsidian since its also a writing app in markdown (and so much more!). Works well on both windows and mac

That's for the lead. I have been a Things user from its inception. I love it. But working for the military, we have to use Microsoft for most things. This may be a great conciliatory to bridge the two. It is one of those apps that just works. Mostly a unitasker, but that's okay. I have dabbled in so many To Do's apps but I keep going back to Things. The UI/UX seems to be geared to Teams outline of the new 11 icons etc. I will give it a look. BTW, I like IA [writer] for my cross-platform writing. It has markdown and other features that I love.
I did the same....one thing i found annoying that Things makes it so hard to add sub tasks and their support staff always has the standard response on a suggestion "we aren't planning this feature yet!" In today's time and age one would expect better transparency from developers on where the app is headed
..look at Craft!!
I prefer keeping things simple - all these apps can get overwhelming and many a times get in the way of actually getting work done. The system is more important than the app in my books. For work I use Google Tasks since it's well integrated to the Google Workspace that our office uses and for personal stuff I stick to the stock apps on my Apple devices. They get the job done, besides, I've already paid for them when I bought the device(s).

My apps to enhance my workflow:
1. Pocket Informant: calendar, tasks, notes. MacOS, iOS, Android
2. Google Calendar: cross platform & web. 2-way sync with Pocket Informant.
3. Toodledo: task manager. Cross platform & web. Follows GTD methodology. 2-way sync with Pocket Informant.
4. Evernote: notes and information capture. I love the new calendar feature where you can associate notes with your Google Calendar events. Sync with Pocket Informant, dated notes appear on my calendar.

Having to pay every month/year for my software is a big no for me. If developers want us to pay money every year they should use the payment model which means the amount you pay each year buys new features (which apps like Agenda and Due use). With this payment model, if you chose not to make an additional payment you can still keep what you have already paid for. One or two subscriptions are fine, but it can easily get out of hand if you have to basically rent all of your key applications.
It's definitely each to their own with this, Carl. As a business owner, I much prefer the small, ongoing nature of monthly or annual fees. Provides security with support/updates and ensures there are no massive upfront costs like there used to be with software.
@@MarkEllisReviews I understand Mark. The only software I am prepared to 'rent' is Microsoft Office. It used to cost hundreds of pounds and was truly too expensive to pay for. It now comes with a lot of extras, the OneDrive storage for example, for a low price.
While I agree on the Agenda payment model being better for both parties, I see ongoing software development just like any other job out there. Why shouldn't we pay accordingly? I am paid by the hour, sometimes for not-so-brilliant work. I still have the security of the payment at the end of the month and wouldn't want that differently for the programmers of the software I use most and love a lot. Things is an exception there as of now, but if there's a chance to pay annually, I'd gladly do so.
I have no issue with ongoing subscriptions as long as the cost is reasonable. TickTick is very affordable at under $4 a month unlike some apps like Sunsama ($20 a month!).
Subscriptions can get out of hand, for sure. On the other hand sometimes I discover software that is well worth the price in terms of improving my quality of life and making me $$, TickTick falls into the latter for me.
Hi Mark, another good video from you. Writing apps: I really like iA Writer. It’s cross platform, the design is minimalistic but beautiful (I’m using it on macOS and iOS). Perfect if you like to focus on your writing.
iA Writer is great. The Windows version lacks the syntax highlighting feature however, but I think the developers said this couldn't be done with a Windows OS.
I like IA Writer, but it's not quite powerful enough for me unfortunately.

How secure is the data stored in Tick Tick? there is very little information shared on this topic on their websites. Customer data is not encrypted at client side, which could be accessed by the service provider.
Thanks for the video. I could use a good todo list. Your question on writing apps: Scrivener, which is a lot like Ulysses, runs on both Mac and Windows. Scrivener has a free demo period with full functionality. You might give it a try.
Scrivener is excellent but looks daunting at first. It can basically be used for any writing projects but most think it's just for writing novels or more in-depth projects.
Thanks, Fitch! I was a long-term Scrivener user for many years. Alas, I got a bit fed up with it's Dropbox sync being so ham fisted.
Great review. Have been using the free version for a couple of weeks now. Even this version has really helped me stay on top of projects and tasks. I like that I can forward emails directly into Tick Tick as new tasks.
Is it possible to set a notification for one task both based on the position and the time as well as an insurance, when the task can be completed at the latest, if I do not arrive in the area? So the notification would pop up depending on what happened sooner, location or the time?
I'm a Todoist user and quite happy with its functionality and the fact that it's also on my platform of choice... Linux!
I have used at least 30 to-do list apps but TickTick made the most sense to me. It's cheap, it's available everywhere, it has a build in calendar. I only use the tasks and calendar, I don't use the eisenhower matrix or habit tracker just yet. But I can recommend this app to anyone, I use the 3 day view on my phone calendar and it's brilliant
Still using it? Have you tried other apps such as Todoist? I’m thinking of using Ticktick as well for the calendar integration only… what’s your thoughts on this
one thing that pushed me away from TT was that it seemed that the web version/app version and Mac version would not sync... there was a different number and setup from each view... as chaotic as my life is, I couldn't deal with multiple counts and syncing issues...maybe that has changed. I'm using ToDoist now (for now) and starting to play around with Notion. I think for straight "to do" there are several key players...things 3 looks sharp. Lastly...for me i think there is a mindset/holistic way to look at your list of all your stuff and figure out how to sort/tag/filter etc that I need to learn. I'll take any suggestions b/c at the end of the day, most straight "to do" apps are so similar...it's splitting hairs.
For a great writing app that works just as well on windows as mac I'd suggest Obsidian. The android app is also very good
I too recentely moved to a multi platform eco-system and the two apps I miss most is Things and Fantastical
What alternative did you find for Apple notes?
Tell them to add watchers for tasks, as it can be only one person assigned.
Also no task management has feature to move finished tasks automaticly to "moderator" so someone can check if it is really done

Hey brother, I enjoy writing on Apple as well, but when I have to write on Windows or Android I just use Google drive with Google Docs. Then you can cross platform if you need to.
I really don't like these apps where you have to subscribe every month or every year. With Things 3, I paid €20, And I can use it without paying anything else.
I've used TickTick for about 5 years now and I just use the free version. No ads, excellent functionality, and very robust. It truly is amazing.

Hi Mark - Does TickTick offer Apple Watch face complications like Things does? It advertises that it does, but I can't seem to have the option to add a TickTick complication. Any guidance would be great!
? Wich is better for Apple Watch? TickTick or Things? In witch app can i see the catagories in colour, for example..
What is the Siri integration like? What is the trial period like? What was the transition / migration from one app to another like?
As fate would have it, I had just deleted ticktick yesterday. I currently use remember the milk. It is pretty long in the tooth, but I haven't found anything close to it for me. Then I found ticktick which claimed to have siri integration, etc. Well.... Never could get it to work. Even with the premium subscription. Was far to difficult to get anythign to work the way one would expect. So to the bit bucket it went.... If they ever sort out their issues, I will try it again, but for me it just isn't there yet. Remember the Milk far out paces ticktick right now for basic functionality. Just my 2 cents. Great video though! THANK YOU!!!!
I always learn a lot from your videos and you have introduced me to some great apps and I think Tik Tik might really work for me it covers everything I need. It’s always good to branch out from Apple as I have found by trying a different device

Things is beautifully designed, but as you mentioned, TickTick is cross platform, so I can use it on my android ipad and mac.

I tried Todoist and TickTick some time
Todoist: elegant, good-looking, stable, with a great library of knowledge and support
BUT where is obvious and most demanding features - in Todoist I can’t see a completed task. What? In to-do app after a long and productive day I can’t simple look and see my done’s? I can’t analyze most important. Yep they have features and ways to see completed task, like in separate project, when you click to separate menu, but it’s not convenient
Sub tasks - I don’t know how, but in Todoist I can’t simply use them. All my sub tasks in reoccurring main tasks becomes like separate main tasks and when I open my daily view my list with dozens subtasks looks like a mess.

Personally for me TickTick is a choice
I use several Macs, for the most part, but also Linux here and there.. anything that ties me down to a single OS is a non-starter, TickTick is the best kept secret in task management apps.

I can’t be into too many ecosystem and platforms. Did that and done that! I need simplicity and something that works. Apple ecosystem provides that for me ; you can’t buy back “ Time” specially as you get older.

Things allows you to share a link of a task or a project to other apps. That’s the only thing keep me not using ticktick.
Cross-platforming...that's an interesting new label I can identify with. To be honest, I've gotten bored with Apple. Lenovo and Samsung to me are offering exciting PCs with great options, Oled/Amoled screens, 2n1 Laptops, and some very interesting offerings. I'm a "cross-platformer." I have a MacStudio because of the configuration, base RAM, SSD, and, most importantly, 10GB Ethernet I can connect to a 5GB internet service. On the Windows side, I have a 16" Samsung Book3 Pro 360 with a gorgeous 3K AMOLED Touch Screen (gorgeous), TB SSD for $1,400 with tons of ports, and a mini SD card slot. All are connected to two 43" 4K monitors. Hello, Apple? Where are you?
The bottom line, I'm not bored, and it's fun being a cross-platformer. I love the experience.
TickTick is great, with tons of functionality. It still needs a UI refresh, though.
I hate subscription based models, so I guess Ill stick with Things 3.
I do have an iPhone, but no Apple PC, so I wanted to try cross-platform.
Tick Tick, Notion, Notes, a calendar app and a writing app… how do they all work together?

Want to leave Omnifocus... its complication makes me always drop it, I am literally sick of its UI... I am appealed by Things but annoyed by the absence of some features (no attachments, no embedded tags, no dedicated view of tags, no location-based tags...). I found Todoist ok but I prefer Things' UI... now I just can't decide if the UI is more important to me than the features... but that's an expensive gamble ! So I was hoping Tick Tick looked better...
Why none of the apps decided to copy Thing's UI... They would kill the market !
Never heard of Tick Tick until I saw this video. Having done lads of research recently I opted for Evernote, but Tick Tick IMHO is far superior. Many thanks for the recommendation

I've seen lots of todo list apps.
For Apple users, I will never understand why people are still paying monthly for the exact same app that is included on their Macs, iPhones, and iPads, just with less integration and a usually worse UI.

Have you tried Obsidian as your Ulysses replacement?
Yes - it's great. But it won't tear me away from Ulysses.
TickTick is still terrible at showing you which section an item belongs to under today. I would create tags for each tags and use those instead. If I have a list called Reviews and two sections Mac and PC, adding an item under either one has no identifier other than Reviews. So I complemented with Mac and PC tags and use those. But this scales terribly the more lists and sections you add. That's the only thing I dislike about TickTick.
It needs some UI improvements - I agree.
Agreed, otherwise compared to, say, Todoist, TickTick is brilliant.

I don’t really know anything about this stuff - I JUST started using Apple’s Reminders a week ago. So, I was a bit curious why you didn’t mention that. Obviously, it’s not cross-platform.
Reminders is great... but it's not quite powerful enough for me (and it isn't cross-platform, as you note).
It's not fair that people who don't live in rich country need to pay same price. No we will never pay subscription for lifetime with that price because it's too much.
Heads up: Things in Australia is $30, whereas Tick Tick is $60.

£27 is cheap. £27 a year is not. I get that software companies want to be sustainable, and to keep working on their apps, but to keep charging without any additional features is just wrong.
But you are paying for future updates, and £27 per year is about 7p a day to keep your entire to-do list and diary in check. It's not your fault, but it bothers me that we've headed down this road where the perceived value of software is so low.

What do you use for email? I ended up using Spark for cross platform support, but was curious what you use? I'm gonna try Tick Tick. I'm currently using MS Todo and what brought me here is I'm thinking of using Any.Do but wanted to see what else was out there.
Top 2 Productivity Apps I install automatically on to my new devices are:
- TickTick
- Notion
Sadly my only gripes with these two are the lack support of native 2 factor authentication especially if you're to putting your entire life online.
I prefer Craft to Notion, very similar but local (so easier access to offline notes)
Todoist + Taskade!
Todoist now have two factor.
Notion is love it or hate it, if it works for you, it's Nirvana, if not, it's torture and painful to even look at. Productivity software is such an individual choice.. have a friend who lives in Notion... another in Evernote, different strokes. I moved from Todoist to TickTick, was best move for me, but some folks dump TickTick for... Todoists :-)

I love Tick Tick but I also love Todoist. One of the main features that Tick Tick is missing compared to Todoist is using the NPL (Natural Processing Language) for dates when editing an existing task with a date. Indeed, when the task already has a date, you cannot anymore use the NPL. This is a significant pain point for me because I'm constantly changing the dates of my tasks and since I use NPL, I hate using the mouse to click on the date time picker.
In the Android version, when you start to edit a task title, you cannot anymore cancel your changes. Yes, even though you click back, what you type will be saved. I like Todoist the ability to cancel my changes if I change my mind.
Adding a task with Todoist in Android using the notification bar is better integrated. Also, the ability to add a task and then a new task popup is displayed again is great when you want to add many tasks. With Tick Tick, you have to click the add button again and again.
Other than a couple of other minors points with Todoist, Tick Tick is a way better than Todoist. Like you compared Things with Tick Tick, Todoist is sexier than Tick Tick.
I don't use the Habit tracker or the Pomodoro tool because I found it's easier to do habit tracking with simple recurrent tasks.
Calendar integration is amazing because I don't anymore need to switch between Google Calendar and my task application. Todoist doesn't have this type of feature.
To sum up, I don't know about Things but if I compared Todoist with Tick Tick, Tick Tick wins the vast majority of the time for each feature.

TickTick comes from China and that is why some do not trust this app. No one knows if the communist regime has its fingers in it somewhere.
I found TickTick rather interesting as an alternative to Todoist. The two apps are very similar. The interface of TickTick is a bit clearer and the integrated calendar is great. But in the end I found TickTick too buggy and switched back to Todoist.
Things is difficult! Almost everyone mentions the user interface as a standout feature. But a lot of it seems outdated... I find recurring tasks poorly implemented. Titles of tasks can't be formatted as links. No real subtasks. Projects don't show the number of tasks they contain, you always have to put that in an area to see that. But there are start and deadline and a progress indicator. Entering new tasks is cumbersome compared to Todoist... Things is ok, but needs a renewal, maybe with Things 4? ;)
