    I was disappointed we barely saw the teen romance
    I felt like dee dee and the principal romance was longer than the actual teens. ( i read the novelization and it focuses so much on Emma and Alyssa)
    Also the Emma break up moment was so weird Emma kept smiling.

    If I was to present this vids opening, I would've gotten 'Nam flashbacks. You are brave, Austin.

    Loved it so much. I watched it as soon as I got back from school, and the soundtrack, plot, and casting couldn't have been done better.

    The biggest thing that ligitmitly pissed me off is how the lesbian romance has barely any development and just no chemistry at all. And how most of the time is going to the straight couple that could have easily just Been written out it’s like they just tried to combine two separate movies into one just meh movie that feels like Emma wasn’t even meant to be the main character for what should be her move

      Well, the major way you could see there relationship was much more solid through a cut scene that was in the original song. Alyssa giving Emma a bracelet as a promposal gift.

      I don't know. As a gay person, I loved their romance. It really repesented how a lot of gay relationships are. A lot of the drama between a gay romance comes from outside reasons which is sad.

    Way too long. It was cute at times but the love thy neighbor song went 3 minutes longer than it should’ve.
    And the final scenes made Lotr Return of the King’s ending seem short

      First of all, I respect your opinion. Secondly I actually loved the movie, and especially the The Love Thy Neighbour one. It felt satisfying to me. The message and truths of the song is something I rarely see in media entertainment even though it is makes so many good points. Aside from that, I just thought it was really fun scene and great song. Loved Andrew Ranalls from his other braodway stuff.

    Hey Austin did you know this movie actually based on Tony Award Nominated Broadway play. You definitely have to see live on stage which I heard the performance was truly amazing. I just can't wait to experience this musical as well. I really love Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, Kerry Washington, James Corden and Keegan-Michael Key!!!

    I've read elsewhere that James Cordon's portrayal of a gay character was somehow offensive to them. So, while watching it I kept waiting to see what he did that was so bad. Didn't see anything, honestly. Thought he did a great job, actually, as well as the rest of the cast. If anyone reading this was offended by him, what specifically was so bad? I'd like to know.

      @laurarenee6407 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree. I thought that he was pretty good in the roll. I'm not a part of the LGBTQ community but I think that the casting was good for a movie adaptation. I understand that they aren't as good as the bway actors but still.

    Sounds like a lot of positives and also a lot of negatives! Haha. I'm surprised you like James Corden so much because most people have said that he really played to stereotypes in the film, but I will hold my opinion until I get to see it. Thanks for the review Austin! As always, cannot wait for more! :)

    • @kavyb1730
      @kavyb1730 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      His stereotypical gayness was there in the broadway musical, so it's part of the character. James Corden had nothing to do with it.

    *Mild spoilers ahead!*
    THE PROM (which is about 4 theater stars who go to a small town to help a lesbian teenager fight against discrimination) is an entertaining movie with good performances (Jo Ellen Pellman being the breakout) and toe-tapping songs. Unfortunately, Peggy Tachdjian and Danielle Wang's editing is a little out of control. From the very beginning, it feels easy to predict the outcome of the story. Which characters' secrets and lies will be exposed, leading to a fight right before the climax, which is where we'll see the titular ceremony. However, all of that happens around the halfway point. What a pleasant surprise! Sure, nothing that follows is particularly original, but credit where credit is due. Before watching the film, I listened to the Broadway album. I also found the original cast's TV appearances and behind-the-scenes music videos that showed clips from the play. The only major change I noticed was that they cut THE ACCEPTANCE SONG in half, resulting in a very abrupt scene transition. Whatever the reason was, why not cut the whole musical number? It's not like it was needed for the plot. Now that it's so short, it feels even less relevant. After I closed my Netflix tab, I read complains about how James Corden plays his character as a stereotype, and also how hiring him goes against inclusivity. There are a couple of problems here:
    -If you watch the aforementioned videos about the Broadway version, you'll notice how effeminate Brooks Ashmanskas was. James is a lumberjack in comparison.
    -James isn't just straight; he's metrosexual. He was cast as a narcissistic diva with flamboyant mannerisms because he plays one on his talk show skits all the time.
    -When it comes to diverse casting, we must only protest when we believe that someone got robbed of a job opportunity. Why would Ryan Murphy do that? Aside from being gay himself, he's arguably the person who works the hardest in the film/TV industry to employ people who don't get hired very often. Hell, he recently produced a movie where *all* the actors were gay. Also, as the director, he's the one who told James how he should play the character.
    During the song LOVE THY NEIGHBOR, Trent Oliver (one of the theater stars) calls the students out for cherry-picking the Bible. When one of them (his name is Kevin) brings up his stepdad, Trent asks if his parents are divorced. When Kevin confirms it, Trent points out that it goes against the rules of the scripture. Trent is lucky that Kevin's dad hadn't died, or this musical number would've ended a lot sooner!
    6/10

      I liked him in this and dont think he should get the hate he does. That said, I think they should have got someone older for the role. Nathan Lane would have been perfection in this.

    Here’s a NOVEL IDEA: How about those folks WHO HATE BROADWAY MUSICALS not watch & talk about them. Simple, right?! The fact that you’ve expressed CONTEMPT for the Medium/Genre automatically nullifies & renders your opinion moot over the matter. To speak with such boldness and audacity over a subject matter YOU KNOW NOTHING OF is not only pretentious, disingenuous of you-but also LAUGHABLE at best!

    The stage musical its based on its better, but I thought they did a good job with this. Its just fun, silly heart on its sleeve stuff but very positive for the people its aimed at. Corden has been insulted for playing a gay man, as a gay man I find that stupid, its acting. However, he might not be as good as the Broadway actor, but I enjoyed him..

    Was actually really disappointed by this movie, the costumes drove me crazy (Emma’s especially) and the random backstories drove me nuts. Was pretty disappointed because I love the cause, director, and cast but the story telling did not go well with me at all!☹️ somehow 2 hours of not enough information? Not sure how they did that.

      First of all, don’t think you’ve seen this movie. Second, there are much worse movies than this. Plus, you can’t blame Hollywood as The Prom has already been a play on Broadway before a movie.

      The prom was a big hit on Broadway being nominated for 7 Tony’s and impacting many people this comment was 2 days before the movie came out ( in America I don’t if that is where you are but that is where I am) and Netflix adapted it and it isn’t perfect but when adaptations like the lightning thief exists you can’t say this is a bad movie .
