    Man, if I had a nickel for every time the minor pentatonic scale got me out of an improvisational rut, I'd be a millionaire. It truly is the all-purpose, go-to scale for damn near every style of music.

    When I started playing, we didn't have scales with names, just played what sounded good, then along came all the modes, scales "building" chords and it really took the fun out of playing. Haven't taken a single lesson, been playing for over 50 years now I gotta "learn" all the theory behind what I've been doing already. That said, Damn good job man. Keep them coming.

    Been playing for Many years and that was one of the most clear and useful lessons I have ever seen. The Only scale I know (and play) is the minor pentatonic and, as you demonstrated so well, for us non-schooled guitarists, it can be used in every style. Well done. Every budding lead guitarist should see this one video. AWESOME.

    I was taught this in school as the Blues scale, only difference being that my lecturer used an extra note in the A string, the 4th fret in between the 3rd and 5th. I'd love to be able to turn this scale into different forms like you do in this vid, but I think knowing the scale doesn't really just let you play with it. Learning songs with these scales will help you get a better understanding than the basic outline of the scale and help you visualize the different shapes available if you ever run into the same scale again, much like how Love Gun by Kiss and Hold The Line by Toto's solos are on very common scales, Hold the Line being on this one, but using that extra note on the A, the shape roams a bit, but you get the gist of it.

    Six months in at55, I see this is much more than I anticipated, my problem is when I learn I want to know it all. And that is causing me to struggle. It's just me, still I understand completely the point your trying to get across. It's all what you want out of it. What you the player wants to hear and what he thinks people want to hear. I'm guessing however in order not to go nuts I have to look at it that way. When you get up there with snow on the roof things look different to time and accomplishment. Your a good music theory guy and player with loads of talent. Any fool could see that. The a pent scale I got down now it's how to apply it is the next level. Thanks you have a long great road in front of you. Jam on Young Man.

  • @MaggaraMarine

    The thing is, all those solos used notes outside of the pentatonic - there were some major seconds, major thirds, major sixths, also a minor sixth (in the surf solo). But yeah, of course most of the notes were in the pentatonic scale.

    • @GUITARTIME2024
      @GUITARTIME2024 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      are those called accidentals?

    • @MaggaraMarine
      @MaggaraMarine 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      raleighman3000
      Not necessary. Accidentals are out of key notes. Pentatonic scale is not a key. So it depends on the key we are in. Many of the styles were actually in A major, but he was using the Am pentatonic. This is common and gives you that bluesy sound. But in that case the Am pentatonic scale itself has accidentals in it. The additional notes on the other hand (major 6th and 3rd in the bluesy sounding examples) were part of the key.
      Also, I would hardly call that jazz example pentatonic (it had a very strong dorian sound to it). Same with the surf example (sounded too much like regular minor, not minor pentatonic). Of course most notes you play will fit the pentatonic because it's 5 of the 7 notes of a diatonic scale. So usually at least 5 out of 7 times you'll be playing notes in the pentatonic scale, even if you are using the whole diatonic scale.

    Been on and off for something like ten years now because I just can't get over 'the hump'; a video as great as this one (and others I've watched from this channel) get me picking it up again, but then it's like 'Im just never gonna reach THAT kind of fluency with this thing'

    Great demonstration using the scale in context! Inspiration is half the battle and I sometimes (unfairly) think I've mastered the Pentatonic and want to move on. Then, videos like this remind me of the endless possibilities of 5 simple notes. If I can make a suggestion: In your phrasing and licks, I noticed you used several mini chords. Perhaps you can do a follow-up on the ready-made chord shapes to use inside the scale.

  • @madarenrut3011

    Good video. However.....
    You should have said PENTATONIC scale is movable. So you can play that same fingering in different keys. I'm 50 years old. I've been playing music the majority of my life.
    Pentatonic has bailed me out too many times.
    Relative minors are cool to.

      Metal uses more scales than other music harmonic minor, minor, pentatonic, Phrygian, Hungarian minor, Dorian, there's probably more people fluent in scales in metal than there are in other music. Do you have a clear definition of the genre metal? Give the artists Testament, Jeff Loomis, Black Sabbath, Pantera, Lamb of God, Nevermore, and Megadeth a listen and tell me they don't use scales.

    Throughout all the modes and scales there are, the pentatonic positions are the most important and useful of all. There are so many possibilities you have with those five notes.

    best thing is to use a lot of reverb single coils are better for it but if you humbuckers have screws take out the screws and theyll sound like single coils also play as near to the bridge as you can i hope this helps
