This is the most vital performance of Brahms' 2nd that I've ever heard. There are certainly broader and more romantic performances. I admire many of them, like Giulini's Los Angeles performance, which has an inner integrity and is deeply satisfying in its own way . But what sets this aside is Kleiber's combination of brisk and lively tempi with rhythmic nuance and transparency of the inner voices. In doing so, he recreates Brahms' architecture in an exciting, bracing, and still moving way. Because of that transparency and phrasing, nothing feels rushed. We know that Brahms preferred not to prescribe tempi and metronomic markings. So there is no "right" way to play this astonishing music. But this is a performance for the ages.

Upon listening to the final 3 minutes of this performance, Brahms says: At first, I thought to myself, "No, no. this isn't what I meant." Later on, I came to realize, "Yes, yes, this is in fact exactly what I meant" :-)

He really knew how to build and build and conserve energy until a massive release at the very end. The final bars are SO LOUD, ditto the final bars of mozart 36 linz, the energy is just electric and everyone in the room can feel it

Wow. Extraordinary -- I've heard lots of Brahms 2 recordings, but this surpasses them all. Magnificent.

A grand performance from end to end.The fourth movement, as conducted by Carlos Kleiber, spoils one's desire or tolerance to hear it played any differently than with gusto, bravado, sonority, and tempo as played here. I know of no other great conductor who was a drummer before he became a conductor, but Carlos Kleiber was a drummer. If you listen again, especially to the 4th movement, you'd appreciate his connection to drumming. I can very well imagine that Brahms, upon hearing this symphony played, as we've just heard, and more particularly, the 4th movement would throw down his cigar and jump up at the conclusion with the loudest of "Bravos" one has ever heard. Thanks for uploading. Sheer joy.

Thanks for the great comment. Glad you enjoyed the performance. I believe Simon Rattle began as a percussionist, by the way.

@@Music-Lover I didn't know that, but I'll listen more carefully for anything Sir Simon conducts to se if there's a "bias" toward drumwork (which I LOVE!) Thanks!

The public wants clowns like Karajan, not real music.

Kleiber was not underestimated, certainly not in Europe, he just made himself rare.

@@Fritz_Maisenbachernothing wrong with Karajan's music, though. He was way better than Kleiber and had a way wider repertoire. A clown? I don't know, he definitely was a superstar and I don't hate him for that

I, too, was looking for the video of this performance, which clearly showed the remarkably tight rapport between conductor and orchestra. The VPO and Kleiber were thoroughly lock and step together throughout the symphony, lending it an amazing sense of urgency that never went off the rails.
