One of those companies I reached out to was Shiny Entertainment. I received a nice letter and some promo materials from them, but what was best of all is that David Perry used to call me randomly over the course of about 2 years and just chat with me about various video games things, upcoming projects, etc. I'm not sure why we ever stopped chatting or why he chose me to talk to, but it's a memory I'll never forget.
Wow, such a nice job on this! A friend just sent me a link. Our team had so much fun making MDK. Thanks for doing all this research! David Perry P.S. Thanks for keeping the ending a secret! Rock on!
I played MDK for the first time a few months ago and can confirm that it still holds up really well! I had a blast playing through it! Everyone on the team deserves all the praise they can get
God MDK was so good, you are right that there has not been anything since that captures that magic of this game. There is just something about MDK that you don't really understand until you play it
MDK2 was the start of my gaming career. The time spent being a part of the team, making that game, is to this day, the best and most fun experience Ive had in gaming. Russell Rice, the art director, was the real reason why the game feels the way it does. His humor and personality are all over this game. He slept over night at the studio more than once to squeeze in something new that was not even suppose to be in the game but he made it happen. The conehead window washers for example. Or after max crash lands into the alien ship impaling a conehead, all Russ adding stuff to the game. Remember the WASSUP Budweiser commercial? Well Russ put together a little animation to the audio of the commercial one night just for fun. He was that committed to the game. Of course Greg Zeschuk was also a massive part of feel of the game, and more so, the gameplay. He would play the hell out of it, trying to figure out how he could make it more challenging to play. And just how far he could push the player to insanity. I remember chatting with him when he had the programmers make the platform at the top of the atomic reactor break when the player finally reached the top, only to fall all the way back to the start . He thought it was hilarious! LOL The game had a ton of talented people involved with it. Casey Hudson was even responsible for making content, level 5 boss as well as all of level 8. Lots of great times and laughs. Getting to draw those loadscreens was a joy, if you look closely you can see me (the muscle man) in the left corner :P As usual your video was excellent, well done!!!!
Replaying MDK 25 years after my first experience with it during summer of 97. Still in awe of the games disctinct artstyle, unique vibe and freaking amazing soundtrack.
my small 7-year old brain exploded in several different ways upon seeing this game for the 1st time, the entire "experience" started with the CD disc itself which had gorgeous artwork, same with the manual with concept artwork that instigated the imagination even more... Then, you barely load up the game and the Menu in itself was already making your jaw drop with such presentation and the soundtrack on it... Wow, just wow... 10 out of 10 masterpiece 🤘(PC table speakers of the time had lots of bass which helped a lot too)
For years I thought this game was a figment of my imagination. I had vague memories of the character and his weirdly shaped head. I could not remember the name of the game so I could never find any information about it. I was thrilled when I actually found it years later and got to play it again confirming I was not crazy.
MDK is one of my all time favorite games. Born in 92 and played it the year it released on PC (cause my dad played it) and then again on PS1. I've played it every few years since. No game has the feel the original MDK had.... that includes the sequel. One of the most highly underrated games of the 90s. And that soundtrack will always be 🔥
MDK is probably my all time favorite video game. I used to play it on PC with a Microsoft sidewinder joystick. It was fantastic! The controls were so intuitive. When you twist the joystick, the character rotates. When you move the joystick side to side, the character sidesteps. The game was erie but fun. The graphics were way ahead of their time in my opinion. I really wish they had made a movie about it.
To me the best MDK meaning has always been "Mahogany Door Knob", which is visible in the background of the MDK2 W95 installer, IIRC. Max Doctor Kurt is also unironically a good one.
another remarkable feat of this game was that it ran smoothly on any cheap "family" computer of the time, my sloppy 486 could not handle Duke Nukem 3D very well but MDK ran flawlessly 👍despite being a newer game
It was the spiritual successor to earthworm jim... The true EWJ3 Reskinned it could be EWJ 100% I bet that was the idea until they tried to make it a new franchise.
@24:30 Edmonton, Alberta! Me and my cousins used to laugh our assess off when we were kids at that scene. Finally! A game that takes place in our own home! 💎
This game popped up in my memory, so I decided to look it up so many years after playing it. I was surprised at how stylish it is, and how it actually still holds up in many ways, there's so much variety. Also can't believe they did such smooth "in-between-level loading" that early.
So much nostalgia with this one. My bigger cousin had a pretty good computer at the time and everytime my family visited them he let me play MDK or Quake. I only had the slow computer of my dad and i didnt get any games for it so seing and playing something like this with my cousin opened up a whole new world of 3d for me.
I remember I was home sick during a bad flu and felt pretty crappy. Then my Mom came home from "grocery" shopping and gave me a copy of MDK2 she bought for me as a surprise "pick me up". I remembered that game for years until I was bouncing around GoG and saw them. Immediately bought both it and the orginal instantly, installed them and had just as much fun as an adult as I did as a kid those years go (If not more so.)
I still love the artstyle of the original MDK in particular. There's something about it that manages to look both futuristic and retro all at the same time in the best possible way!
I still remember the sound design all these years later. One of the first games I ever got my hands on. I remember being at a friend's house and seeing he had MDK2, I never realized the original got a sequel. Immediately asked my parents to get it for my birthday. Was sorely disappointed by the sequel's aesthetic. Lacked the grit of the original. And didnt at all care for the parts where I was forced to play as the doctor or dog (despite liking them as characters).
Damn, great job with this! So well-researched and thorough -- very satisfying for us cult followers of MDK. :) I'm surprised and impressed around how many quotes, stories and background drama you were able to unearth!
This was one of a few games my dad had on our PC, I can remember playing this when I was like 5 or 6 and I never had any idea how to save the game, so each time I played it I would just start it over from the beginning. 😂
Same! This game always lingered in the back of my mind and could never remember the name of it until I typed in “Dog with a cigarette” on google years later 😂 My childhood was then unlocked. I haven’t played this since I had a Dreamcast! And I was born in 98 so I was very young at the time. Crazy. This game was dope!
These games were underrated. I loved the premise of roving death machine cities and how cutting edge being able to zoom in and snipe in the first one was on PS1. Then the second one was an essential Dreamcast title imo.
YES!! Holy crap I love this game! It came as a pack in game with my Microsoft Sidewinder Force Feedback joystick back in the day along with Interstate 76.
I always felt that the funny comedic points if the game clashed with the HR Giger aesthetic. But the game was smooth as butter and made you feel invincible. Really fun game.
Man I love MDK, it's one of my favorite games. It would be nice to see this game getting a remake or at least an HD re-release to make it run better on modern systems and add some things like widescreen and 60fps, it would be awesome.
I'm surprised you didn't dive into the graphics a bit more. They were revolutionary for the time. I seem to remember the texture resolution being so high that no video card on the market could run it on highest. Each individual ground texture was something like 640x480. Basically the Crysis of 1995. I love MDK and have always had a fascination with it. Something about the character design and the gunhead is so unique and creative, even to this day. I originally played it and beat it on Playstation and had heard the PC version was kind of legendary because of how good the graphics were. I don't think any of us realized your character was a sprite! We thought the computer was pumping out movie quality CGI! Plus, any true gamer from the mid 90s knew it was absolutely nothing like Doom and it was the true next generation of 3D *gameplay*.
I don't know how I never discovered this channel before but this documentary was very good. You really should have more people subscribing and watching these. Great content!
@@slopesgameroom Well me personally, I went through the playlist for your "Complete Histories" and I am interested in every one. Clearly I am in your core demographic LOL 🤣 And thanks for responding to my comment on a 6 month old video!

@@thatfield977 it's "Murder Death Kill" spoken by Sandra Bullock in my head. The Game actually comes up on Google if you type out murder death kill too
I was jus thinking about this game at work recently. From that 1st cutscene skydiving into the 1st level, this game exposed me to something different years ago. This video is epic to a fan like myself.
I used to play it every year and finish this game on Mac, but sadly now it's not supported. A game that is purely fun and with that design and sound track is perfect game.
I felt sic and got nightmares because i played this game nonstop as a kid. I kind of had Halluzinations after like 10 hours straight and i had to vomit. My father didnt want me to play the game further on . But i played it anyway. After so much years have past i still get those sic Nostalgic feeling when i look at this game. I even rembember the smell of the pc box
MDK2 is and always will be my favorite videogame ever. I know it's simply nostalgia but it's merits stand by themself: it has fun story, funny dialogues, extremely solid gameplay, agoraphobic and detailed atmospheres and, cherry on top, one of the most kickass rave music in space in videogame history.
I first met MDK 2 on a Dreamcast demo disc. Played it quite a bit on there. Eventually saw it used for a couple bucks, and being 11 at the time, had enough collected couch-change to grab it. I love that game. I've never been able to get the PC version of MDK to work though :( I know I could play the PlayStation copy, but I want to play the PC version first.
never finished it as a kid but it is a badass game!!!! I instantly recognized the game when I saw a small piece of it, i didn't remember the name but thankfully it had the name with it.
Subbed. This was amazing. I prefer the DOS version myself too - it has a particular feeling to it that I can't explain, in comparison to the PSX version. Wonderful job!
My mate got MDK when it came out for ps1 and we had a blast with it over a weekend. Decided to get a hold of both games a few months back and I regret nothing, great stuff!
When I first heard MDK in the movie Demolition Man and they said "Murder. Death. kill." I was like, "Oh that's what it stood for!!" Yes, I was a bit of a moron.
I loved this game. Loved being able to use sniper rifles and also throwing grenades felt really good. Loved the start bit where you're sky diving. Will never forget it
man that was awsome. i love mdk. when i played it in 1997 i thought i was watching a movie. also my fav band are nirvana and naked is in my top 10 movies ever. so now it all makes sense, thx!!!!
So nice to see these two amazing games get some love. Unfortunately many have forgotten about it and its a hidden gem. We brought mdk 2 along with our first ps2 way back in 2000.
Bruh I never played the game but watched someone else play it as a kid, I didn't remember the name but the one thing I remember from this game was the scientist saying eureka I've made toast.
This game definitely deserves a remaster or remake for PS5 and virtual reality. Using the coil suit in virtual reality would be an interesting experience.
Probably one of the “first” PC games (excluding Keen, Stunt Race and others) I played after deciding the N64 was my last console. Spectacular game. And also lovely that no 3D acceleration required.
Interesting video. The graphics give me an early Timesplitters vibe, yet the gameplay looks quite unique from any other shooter. Might be worth watching a Lets play or something if i can find one.
I never knew that the first MDK was not done by Bioware. I remember that line in MDK: 2 with the aliens attacking Edmonton ( the City I live in and I went to the university that the doctors both went to). I thought Bioware release Shattered Steel in 1996 as there first title. It was a mech title. I remember my pops friend showing the game and said it was made in Edmonton.
My favourite game of all time! The demo was bundled into my Packard Bell Win. 95 machine, along with The Incredible Machine, Swiv 3D, and Adiboo! Hey.. How about the complete history of Adiboo while we're on it? 😋
I loved this game as a kid, I first played in elementary/primary school in the computer lab, the Gen 1 iMacs had just been installed in the lab and there were 2 games preinstalled which we were allowed to play, Nanosaur and MDK, after playing it for the first time, I saved up my allowance and bought the PSOne version. It remains as one of my all time favorites
I used to have the DOS version of the first one back when I had my windows 95 computer back in the 90s. I enjoyed the game, I haven't played it in a long time
I honestly think about this game all the time. I played the pc game and mdk2 on PlayStation. I’ve forgotten a lot about it, but this brings back so many fond memories. I would like to extend a sincere thanks to you. Great job.
I remember MDK 2 HD was originally released as an exclusive to the Beamdog launcher, named after its studio which was founded by BioWare people. Hardly anyone found out about it so it ended up releasing on Steam less than a year after. But I also recall it being a buggy mess at launch and for example when I fell into a void after missing a jump, I respawned within that same void, camera still stuck watching from above, rather than being brought back to the previous platform, effectively soft-locking me.
It also has audio glitches, like music playing where there isn't supposed to be, or even the wrong track on occasion if I remember right. I also noticed many visual oddities, like the original in the cutscene on the Jim Dandy when Kurt is getting ready to dive for the minecrawler at the start, the gun is on his head, yet strangely in the HD version it's BOTH on his head and his arm. I've also had the hud decide to just show up whenever it wanted to randomly as well. That's the one part I'd argue against on this episode, that for PC the best way to play MDK2 is the GOG version, the original graphics actually hold up fine.
Loved the video, man. This was always a game I saw at the video rental store and on shelves but never played; that crazy character design and box art has always stuck with me though. Thanks again for the great content!
90s/early 2000s sci-fi games were such a cool vibe. Weird, wonderful funny AND dark, there was nothing quite as inspiring and creepy, as a kid, as your first experience with games like MDK, Oddworld, Giants: Citizen Kabuto, Half Life, War Wind etc.
Yes! A perfect The Complete History in that I owned this game, bought used on a whim, and have very fond memories of it though so few people have heard of it. I'd put Silent Bomber in this camp as well. Check out that game (PS1) if you haven't.
Christmas 97 I got a ps1 with a demo disc I went to bed woke up like midnight and bro rented games,I woke up to final doom and this...the most amazing playing, looking, sounds just as he sed leaves an impression on u for the rest of your life. Best Christmas memory ever

Third time I’ve watched this video! I thought I was the only one that remembered this game. Also that’s an awesome shirt, any idea where I can find it. (The anime one)
Great video, very pleasant to remember those days the way you put this videos together, good job. The gaming industry was like lightning, very beautiful, very bright, and gone in a flash.
First time i am played this game when i was a child. A few days ago i found old PC into stock on my job and revived it. Now i am playing first part of this game again and I'm surprised at how interesting to this game after 20 years.
So let me get this straight: The original concept art and ideas for MDK didn't make any sense and yet these are coming from the same guys that worked on a game about a worm that uses a powerful space suit to rescue Princess What's-her-Name from an ugly slug queen. Yeah.....let that thought sink in.

Wild hearing parts of the ALIEN 3 soundtrack in the first look presentation for MDK
man that was awsome. i love mdk. when i played it in 1997 i thought i was watching a movie. also my fav band are nirvana and naked is in my top 10 movies ever. so now it all makes sense, thx!!!!
How could you say Cool Spot was a greater memory than a game?! Cool Spot is great!
Cool spot brings back so many great memories 😀
The step up in production value is definitely noticed 👌
Appreciate this mate
So nice to see these two amazing games get some love. Unfortunately many have forgotten about it and its a hidden gem. We brought mdk 2 along with our first ps2 way back in 2000.
Brilliant game!!! I have finished MDK about eight times. And when i managed to configure mouse and keybord WASD modern way it's surprisingly easy :-)
Bruh I never played the game but watched someone else play it as a kid, I didn't remember the name but the one thing I remember from this game was the scientist saying eureka I've made toast.
So awesome. Just sitting here thinking we need a remake!!!
It's really fascinating how much it looks like modern 3rd person action games.
Great video as per usual mate. I always love when you do deep dives into games like these and the editing and everything in it was spot on.
we need a remake or remaster of this masterpiece
So glad to hear you talk about the WiiWare version, I remember reading about it in Nintendo Power
Yeah, there was supposed to be a "Descent" port on WiiWare as well, but Interplay unfortunately went broke before they could finish it.
You should do Legacy of Kain series. To this day Soul Reaver is still one of the my most favorite games.
MDK was a thing to behold with a 3DFX card and is rather enjoyable to this day. I remember picking it and Blood on the same day!
Interesting video. The graphics give me an early Timesplitters vibe, yet the gameplay looks quite unique from any other shooter. Might be worth watching a Lets play or something if i can find one.
Dood yes. I love both Time Splitters and MDK. The sniping in MDK is unlike any other game.
It's nothing like Timesplitters. It's better than that.
Back when apple computers were actually serious
omg if our iMacs had MDK instead of Nanosaur i would've been kicked out of school. Nanosaur suuucked.
I used to have the DOS version of the first one back when I had my windows 95 computer back in the 90s. I enjoyed the game, I haven't played it in a long time
MDK is on GOG if anyone is interested in checking it out.
I honestly think about this game all the time. I played the pc game and mdk2 on PlayStation. I’ve forgotten a lot about it, but this brings back so many fond memories. I would like to extend a sincere thanks to you. Great job.
Thank you for making this video and all of the research that you've clearly put into it.
I remember this game pushing my PC to the limit being able to snipe peaples eyes out
Yeah, the second level boss literally requires you to shoot out his eyes.
Great episode mate. MDK 2 is one of my favourite Dreamcast games. Shame the series doesn't get the recognition it deserves. Keep up the good work man.
Christmas 97 I got a ps1 with a demo disc I went to bed woke up like midnight and bro rented games,I woke up to final doom and this...the most amazing playing, looking, sounds just as he sed leaves an impression on u for the rest of your life. Best Christmas memory ever
Great video! I love the MDK games! By the way, I don't know if you've done it already, but could you do a video about the Legacy of Kain series?
2:07 It almost became a movie?!
10:58 So that's how you get the gun off!
14:20 Oof!
21:29 Awwwww,maaaaaan!
29:26 Hated those guys!
To play this game again!
Another classic. Loved the intro for MDK2, and I'm loving these videos!
I played this on a PPC (pre-intel) Mac. I think it was bundled with them at the time.
Awesome. Glad you got this up without the issues that you mentioned earlier this week, was too excited for this one. 🥳🤩
Third time I’ve watched this video! I thought I was the only one that remembered this game. Also that’s an awesome shirt, any idea where I can find it. (The anime one)
Every time someone mentions MDK, I say; _Non, Non Rien n’a changé_ !
Thats correct... except for her name is actually "Queen Slug-for-a-Butt" (for real)
@@Shazamatazz Actually, her full name has several gross adjectives included in there as well
Yeah, if the weird guys who specialize in weird games every day design something they think is weird you get MDK
Earthworm Jim! He saved the episode!
Earthworm Jim! His head it might asplode! _[sic]_
My first PC came with a demo of MDK and I played it over and over again. Bought it eventually. Probably one of my favourites that i still play today
Thank you. I been waiting decades for this.
Such an awesome franchise
Oh I definitely remember MDK, I spent a chunk of my childhood calling the protagonist The Green Goblin
I remember getting the iMac when it first came out. This was the only game I had on it for awhile til I got Civ 2 and Close Combat.
I hope that one day they make a new mdk game.
MDK 2 was one of my favorite games on the Dreamcast!
I'd love to see an updated version on Steam/ PC instead of just the GOG version.
The MDK ending music video was the weirdest thing ever
the full colored video ending is on youtube now from the original band
If you love those games you should interview Tommy Tallerico
One of the best and unique games i have ever played. And still looking good. Thank you to bringing back the good old memories.
