    We had one of those old Ford cabovers at the department I worked for. It was a 1976 with a 3208 Caterpillar, 5 speed trans with a 2 speed rear axle. It had a Boardman fire apparatus body on it. It was one of the first air brake trucks that the department owned. It had a 500 gpm Waterous pump. The solenoid on the battery box may have had something to do with an old 12 volt wind up siren. I think I remember our old truck having a solenoid on the frame near the siren. It sure brings back a lot of memories.

      I've driven a couple of tandem dumps with 3208's and 13-unders and they were fine trucks. 3208 is a fine motor.

    That relay on the main rail is likely for the starter and a gas pliers (with figure 8 slot) to adjust - the handles fit from from one side to the other to start the starter. Fords had it on the fender wall or such to make it easy. The two small wires go to the key. One is ground and the other key start. Puts 12v on the coil to throw the relay and short the side to side for the starter.

    it reconnects the second battery to the vehicle's main battery (to allow charging) when the engine is running and it allows the vehicle's battery to send power when the vehicle is in accessory mode or when the fire truck is running.

    A little JB weld spread over a patch of fine wire mesh would seal that intake manifold until you can either get a spare or can get the hole patched with welded metal.

  • @awkwarddude
    @awkwarddude 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    That's a challenge for sure. After plug wires, plugs and making sure the carb will feed fuel, you'll need to trace starter wires. That may be a starter relay on the right frame rail. As was suggested scrape the manifold to bare metal and patch with JB Weld. That clutch yoke sticking out of the bell housing should have a slave cylinder rod attached to it if it was a hydraulic clutch. It could have been removed. Trace lines from the clutch pedal assembly that should have a master cylinder connection. Look for mounting holes near that clutch yoke. Check and see if it has any brake action and as you suggested you might be much better off towing it to your ranch to work on it in a shop environment and close by tools. Good luck!

  • @jds3545
    @jds3545 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I know this videos a little old now but I'm just watching it. I am fairly certain that hole in the intake is in the egr path from the head to the carb base plate. That shouldn't effect how it runs other than exhaust gases would come out of it. The previous owner may have even blocked off the passage wich would mean it wouldn't have any effect on it running. I hope you see this and it helps you out.

  • @neil6212
    @neil6212 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Engine is a 391. This is simply the heavy duty version of the 390. And, don't forget the points and condenser. You may just need to clean the points, but they're cheap. A mess of the wiring is fire truck specific. If it has a Federal Q siren (powered by a starter motor looking motor) It will definitely have a special solenoid switch, and no doubt a button on the passenger side floor. Don't forget a well charged group 31 battery or three! They have threaded top posts...just right for a crescent wrench! Getting it running won't be any more complicated than a pickup truck of the same vintage. That solenoid on the battery tray might have been a master disconnect for the emergency lights, or perhaps a control for recharging an extra battery. Those are generally hooked to an isolated output in the alternator, which comes on when the alternator is actually putting out.

  • @DJTAZ1996
    @DJTAZ1996 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    For that hole in intake manifold use J.B. WELD and patch that hole. Let it sit 24 hours and it literally turns to liquid steel. Its about 5-7 bucks at auto parts stores and great for patching stuff with high heat etv

Looks about rusty enough for brake fluid to have been all over it and never did see the slave cylinder. The master for it ought to be on the firewall. Yall ought to go back once more and see how many more snake sheds you find. A guy I worked for was deathly scared of snakes. Even when snow was on the ground. I was cleaning out a ditch with a shovel and he hollered SNAKE and threw a hose down at my feet. I never slowed down. @@HamiltonvilleFarm I'm going to give you the whole thing since you're way behind on me aggravating yall.
      Years ago the whole family went camping over a long weekend at a reserved campground. Pisgah National. Uncles, Aunts, Parents, Cousins, the whole outfit. I was leaving one evening coming back home when my baby sister ran up and gave me a rubber snake and said for me to hide it before some of the kids gave some of the old folks a heart attack running around with it. I had an old field jacket and coats and such piled in the middle of the bench seat on the old truck, 67 or 68 Chevy 1/2 ton so I slipped the snake under the field jacket and promptly forgot about it. Fast forward to I have no idea when but was a while. My boss was riding shotgun and started pawing through the coats and such proclaiming about what he might find in there, to which I said, 'You better watch it, you might get snake bit' and THEN remembered that rubber snake but before I could say anything he yanked the field jacket up and the snake went BOING and raised up like it was going to bite him. Rubber will do that. He hollered and bounced off the door 3 times that was sprung from someone backing into it from when my dad was driving it, the door popped open and he landed in the ditch. I was already stopped by then. 'I'll get you for that' he said and I replied that that's what he got for plundering around in someone else's vehicle. It was later that same day he threw that hose at my feet and hollered 'SNAKE'! I've done a LOT of living in my 70 blessed years. This is the Gods honest truth too. You can't make this stuff up.
