    I was in DBX waiting for a layover in full view of the crash when it happened. I just gotta say, you don't fully realise the seriousness of an aircraft exploding like that until you're there and can feel the entire terminal shake and the cloud of ash expanding from the plane. It's amazing everyone made it out of there alive.

    If I remember correctly, this was the flight where many of the passengers, in mid-evacuation, against the direct instructions of cabin crew, were trying to extract their bulky items of carry-on luggage, slowing the whole evacuation and placing lives at risk. It was a scandal.

    • @mrclasspcwizard
      @mrclasspcwizard 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @Kate 64 The airline pays 7000$ per each registered luggage in the case of a total loss. And knowing Indian families tend to pack several bags, Im sure they got more than enough compensation

    • @mookie2637
      @mookie2637 4 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      @Kate 64 "Selfish"? How ironic that you use that word. I suspect most people would prefer to lose their belongings than their lives. Poverty is not an excuse, and airlines usually pay compensation. Trying to take carry-on luggage with you in the event of an evacuation should be a criminal offence, whether it's at O'Hare, Las Vegas, or Dubai.

    When the main gear touched down, software inhibited the TOGA switch, and the engines stayed at idle until the thrust levers were moved forward manually (and too late). Another accident caused by misunderstanding the functions of flight-control software, and the folly of "sharing" control between pilots and software in a critical phase of flight.

    • @David-mr3gw
      @David-mr3gw ปีที่แล้ว

      I was actually wondering why they didn’t throttle up upon go around, they obviously hit TOGA and presumed the thrust levers would just do there thing, but in that situation both pilots were probably bricking it. go arounds are always encouraged but no one ever wants to do one.

    • @lbowsk
      @lbowsk 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Not quite. But close. The AT is inhibited below 35' during landing for a short window. I forget now but its for several seconds. As a result of this fact (its contained in the Boeing Flight Manual, so not a surprise to anyone except these two) ALL crews are trained to manually "follow up" or indeed ADD the thrust manually before the Auto Throttle does. It was the crews JOB to manually add thrust when they hit the Go Around switch or at least ENSURE that the Auto Throttle did it. Yet they pitched up with zero thrust and then waited an eternity before they added power. Boom goes the jet. What a surprise!
      The 777 has literally an insane amount of thrust. Had they shoved the levers up even half way at that light weight, that plane would have flown out of that botched landing. Its a damn shame. Perfectly good and incredibly competent airplane reduced to scrap.

Been watching for the last 4 nights 😳 I’m afraid of flying (though I’ve been on a plane multiple times) but surprisingly these videos taught me a lot and that I wasn’t even afraid of watching. It’s really educational to watch (although the result of souls lost devastates me) and these incidents helped improve the aviation industry.

    (February 6th, 2020)
    The flight crew did not effectively scan and monitor the primary flight instrumentation parameters during the landing and the attempted go-around. The flight crew were unaware that the autothrottle (A/T) had not responded to move the engine thrust levers to the TO/GA position after the Commander pushed the TO/GA switch at the initiation of the FCOM ̶ Go-around and Missed Approach Procedure.

    What I don't understand about this are the following;
    1. Why did the flight crew choose to retract the gear at such a low altitude following take-off. While I assume it was because deployed landing gears create extra drag, typically gears are retracted once there's positive climb.
    2. The flight crew knew that the was variable wind speed and direction so a head wind could have turned into a tailwind at any instance so that means as they took off into a head-wind, a tail wind would have the opposite affect, i.e. airspeed would decrease as would lift.

    This is why I prefer 777's to any other make, because when survivable incidents like this have happened, in three cases that I can recall, nearly every passenger survived. They hold together like tanks!

    • @wizardmix
      @wizardmix 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Lakshay It held together pre-fire on ground impact at landing speeds, likely at 140+MPH. All passengers to escaped a largely intact aircraft. Post fire, once everyone was out, the aluminum eventually melted under the intense heat, which is what you see at 8:35 .. That's physics. Aluminum will melt under high heat. True with any aircraft made of the alloy.
      I re-assert that when the 777 has been put to the test in survivable incidents, it has passed exceptionally well:
      BA38 -- Lost both engines on final due to a fuel clog. Crashed hard short of the runway at LHR. ALL 152 souls aboard survived a largely intact aircraft. 47 injuries, 1 serious.
      Asiana 214 -- Pilot error, mismanagement of the throttle. Crashed HARD on the end of the runway at SFO and cartwheeled before skidding to a stop. There are actual videos of that. Only the tail section broke free. Of the 307 souls aboard, 304 survived and 187 injuries.
      The one in this video speaks for itself.

  • @islamicschoolofmemestudies
    @islamicschoolofmemestudies 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    this could turn out to be lot lot worse. The same thing happened with an aircraft in my country once, and the plane got obliterated into pieces because when the plane stalled in 100 feet altitude the pilot panicked, he increased the throttle ,his nose still points upward and he banks the plane to the left side causing the wing to struck a lamp then the plane crashed into pieces killing everyone on board.
    The emirate pilot here are more skilled even tough they made an error and yet they are very very lucky that the b777 have good structural integrity otherwise the plane would probably got torn into pieces after falling 85 feet right on the belly part of the hull.

    B777 TOGA functions do not work when on the ground. They pressed TOGA switch on the ground and didn't check their FMA and did not check that the THR lever were still at idle.
    That is what caused the crash.
    Lesson: Actually advance the THR levers forward with your hand whilst pressing TOGA s/w, instead of just pressing TOGA with your index finger.

    It’s pretty simple: the throttles were not advanced immediately causing there to not be enough lift. This caused the plane to sink and then crash. Also, the pilots should have retracted the landing gear at 200-300 feet, but retracted them at about 60 feet.

    The Air Accident Investigation Sector determines that the causes of the Accident are: (a) During the attempted go-around, except for the last three seconds prior to impact, both engine thrust levers, and therefore engine thrust, remained at idle. Consequently, the Aircraft’s energy state was insufficient to sustain flight.
    (b) The flight crew did not effectively scan and monitor the primary flight instrumentation parameters during the landing and the attempted go-around.
    (c) The flight crew were unaware that the autothrottle (A/T) had not responded to move the engine thrust levers to the TO/GA position after the Commander pushed the TO/GA switch at the initiation of the FCOM ̶ Go-around and Missed
    Approach Procedure.
    (d) The flight crew did not take corrective action to increase engine thrust because they omitted the engine thrust verification steps of the FCOM ̶ Go-around and Missed Approach Procedure.
    The further contributing factors are interesting too.

    I remember this as I was in transit in Dubai. The airport was completely crippled and situation was not handled well by the officials. Hundreds of people including myself were stranded for days. In fact Emirates tried to cover everything up as the crew and staff were not allowed to talk about the incident. Furthermore in December of 2017 an Emirates flight departed lax bound for Dubai and one of the engines caught fire. My friend was working at lax when the incident occurred and everyone was specifically told not to talk about the incident. Again Emirates tried to cover up the incident as to not tarnish their name. Shame on Emirates.

    Believe they should have committed to either go around or landing at least 30 seconds earlier. 30 seconds is an eternity in that phase of landing. Once they made the bad decision to TOGA they should not have retracted the landing gear until they had definite positive climb with sufficient airspeed.

    I was in Thailand when I was around 13 and this happened like 2 days before we have to fly from Bangkok to Dubai. It was shocking seeing this news when I was in the hotel on the Thai news with the family. Now I’m 18 and I won’t forget that day and rest in peace to the hero.

    Interesting to know the final verdict of the investigators. Very unusual of them to take so long or perhaps remain silent in this case.

    I have only recently started watching your videos in bulk, they are fantastically detailed and researched as well as well presented using the flight sim. Very interesting to watch.
    I am however intrigued by some of the language in the captions. Is English not your first language?
    This is in no way a criticism and doesn't detract from the video at all.
    My English, although my first language isn't that great!

    I was about 4 hours total into solo flying.
    I was in a Cessna 150 and coming in for a landing on my 3rd flight.
    I had all the info and no other pilots before me had mentioned wind shear conditions. The control tower didn't even know.
    A perfect pattern, heading in on final I picked up a tail wind instead of the head wind I had.
    I announced a go-a-round as I ended up almost half way down the runway.
    I also informed the tower of the wind shear.
    I then went through the pattern and announced that I would be making a long extended final from 2.5 miles out and landing.
    I made it back in and that is what matters.
    I like to think that I handled it well for only having about 4 hours solo including the time on this flight.
    A good lesson to learn from this video is that automated systems and electric crap isn't a pilot's best friend.
    Be a pilot first and always. Screw the automated stuff.
