So this cover is actually an English cover of a Japanese song, with the Japanese title being "Aishte Aishte Aishte", which literally translates to "Love Me, Love Me, Love Me". That makes this all the more impressive, considering that the lyrics had to be translated and reworked to fit the song again, and what's crazy is that Nerissa actually did this herself, rather than getting anyone else to do it for her. A slight difference in Nerissa's version compared to the original is that the original is more about a child wanting parental love, but this one is more of a toxic partner's love.
In lore Nerissa is the Demon of Sound, and like the rest of Advent was imprisoned, her reason being that she almost drove the world mad due to the power of her voice.
For recs, I would love to see you react to Advent's debut song, Rebellion (has even more vocal cannon Nerissa), and also I'll rec Myth's song Non-Fiction (this is kinda in prep for a series of recs)
my favorite part of this cover is this was her Debut cover, so literally the first time we ever got to hear her sing and it was a cover of one of the craziest vocaloid songs out there
The original is a Japanese anime OP: "Aishite. Aishite. Aishite." (pardon my spelling as it is probably wrong). Heck Ado has a live performance of it streaming tomorrow I think.
Outside of Rissa's vocals--which are f'ing awesome in this piece--she also translated the lyrics herself. Instead of going for direct translation, which does not work Japanese to English, she did an incredible job of capturing not only the lyrical thread but the freaky insanity of the song.

AHHH I am so happy you got around to reacting to this cover!! It's almost been a year since it released and it's still my favorite cover of hers. Her voice is one of the best in Hololive without a doubt. If you're interested, I'd recommend checking out her covers of Down By the River and God-ish.

So about the song. lets do a lil breakdown:
Somewhere there was a necklace and it coils like a snake. This necklace represents expectations placed on a kid.
The necklace tightens and will only loosen itself to praise, so the child in question craves praise and affection to lessen the weight of expectations.
As the child grows up into a teenager those expectations are still as tight and dig into their neck almost suffocating at this point.
And the teenager realizes that just praise isnt enough, they need to be the perfect student, the perfect son or daughter, the perfect athlete.
They confess their love to someone they see as being beneath them, "some one like you, so miserable vulgar and crude"
because they NEED to be perfect. But they hope this will loosen the stranglehold on them. And they apologize , they are now placing the same suffocating expectations onto this person.
Nerissa didnt make up the lyrics from scratch but she did "Transliterise" the lyrics which is essentially localizing the song from japanese to english. The original is Aishite, Aishite, Aishite by Kikou and is a fantastic listen with even more fantastic covers As an additional recommendation I want to suggest God-ish by Nerissa, her vocal range was INCREDIBLE

I would recommend some Amane Kanata, if you get a chance. But, you should also branch out a little and maybe see if you can catch a clip of Ironmouse singing.

Nerissa really debuted with a bang, this cover is incredible and a very close second place on my favourites list of this song, with the cover by Izuru (Holostars) still up on top for its more unhinged execution (Ado's cover is amazing as well).
For more songs on the unsettling side, Okayu and Hajime's cover of Loveit? and a group cover of お呪い / Omajinai on Kanata's channel are great.
Also I'm still recommending Tokino Sora's original song Star,star,start.
It is a little Yandere! Rissa can be a tad bit parasocial towards her fans, so it fits.
Also, if you haven't listened, her english cover of Vampire is also fantastic!
absolutely love Rissa her voice is crazy good plus she has a sisters that sing too her karaokes are super fun also as much of a weeb as I am I can appreciate an EN talent actually going out of the way to actually translate a JP song and give us a proper EN cover its just nice to actually listen to a song and actually understand it lol I really cant wait to see what we get from her in the future. I shall continue my EN simping and suggest Kiara's 4Blood cover, Calli & AmaLee's Dance Past Midnight, or any of AmaLee's Film Red Songs lets say New Genesis (Tot Musica is the obvious choice but ya got to show love to the rest of em lol)
