Thanks, mate. There are a large number of "guides", video and in print, purporting to guide one in the use of this etrex unit. Most are worthless bollocks--yours is quite simple yet very helpful.
Watching this, hearing the birds squawking and even the sound of your walking in the grass has really got me wishing I could blow the dust off my old Garmin and hike the moors and fells again......alas a spine injury from my time in another land far away whilst in the military has reduced me to a stumbling, shuffling pain filled wreck...but I refuse to give up and one day I will be able to fire it up and walk once again.....and find it is woefully outdated & feel the need for a nice new one!!
I ordered this one today,it will be my first GPS experience.I really appreciate FuturelsNigh posting this video.I'm off to a good start in learning how to hike with it.
Yes it can. Good idea to mark a start point though, or use the Man Overboard feature to get a quick fix on where you start from. Then you can see that getting closer as you return.
Good demo on the Garmin eTrex! I've haven't used the handheld hiker versions of the Garmins, but really like their automotive dashboard solutions. I will check out the eTrex the next time I'm at REI or a similar place!
Great video tutorial i have just bought one of these but it has no instruction manual, so this was a help indeed, i have just one question, how do you add grid coordinates to it, ? If you could do a quick video i would be very very greatful

Or, as a mate did on night, when a trailer got a flat tyre, we pushed the trailer off of the road, out of sight, marked the spot, then came back during the day with a spare and fixed it. Didn't need to remember any recognisable features of the area. Worth it's weight in gold that night.
@TheSoulessLegend I got mine in 1999 and in 2003 I removed the batteries and tucked the GPS away in my closet. Not sure why I stopped using it. Dug it out last night and put fresh batteries in it. Having not been turned on for 8 years it took about 1.5 hrs for it to initialize and get satellite signals. First introduced in 1998, not many electronic devices remain on the market unchanged after 13 yrs. The fact that this exact unit is still being made & sold is a real testiment to it's design.
@m70c00l If you're in Seattle, and you enter a waypoint in Miami, it will show you where the waypoint is. The compass works, and it will tell you the distance. It will also tell you how long it will take to get there at your current rate of speed.
Great video. I'm new to using a gps so I have a basic question. Can I get a hand held gps that I can load a hiking trail and be guided just like a car model driving through a city? Most hand helds iv seen just show a straight line from point to point not the path to take. Thank you for your time.
Sorry to ask, I am going to buy a GPS soon to go out on MTB and think about xTrex H: can I upload a track on it (the oner I find in blogs (es: file.gpx)) from computer to this GPS and then is it going to guide me through it? Thank you!
is there a limit to how far away a way point can be, like if i enter a way-point at a place thats 1 1/2 hours away from my house, if i go back to my house will it show me on the compass were that waypoint is even though its so for away
hello Joseph, thank you for the video , i have a question i hope you can help me; is this model suitable for marine navigation?. can i use it in long sailing trips?
I see Joseph hasn't replied, so I will jump in. Yes, the Etrex is good for marine navigation, especially recording your starting point, then returning home. Using it like that, it's REAL simple to use. I use it on my dirtbike when riding through the bush, and I bought the handle bar mount for it. There are a lot better units out there these days that are easier to use, but there is nothing this little thing can't do and is easy once you get used to it. Just remember, there are no maps, the unit draws lines in space. On that matter, I use it in my car as well. Even though there are no maps, I like to record my drives in the bush when follows mates so I know my way home.
you've got to try Automatic English subtitles! You know you talk about Cold war, suicides, blood and fish? Also about Pulitzer, Nixon and taxes and stuff, it's hillarious!
can you change the distance from meters to miles, i train for miles and im needing a gps that can tell me how many miles ive done while im walking, can you let me know please :)
does anyone have any experience with connecting this to a PC? i have one and i want to add alot of way point ( sailing marks). iv ordered the cable on ebay, should be here in the next few days.would really appreciate some help!
Take it to your local police station they will check the serial number with Garmin (or any other maker) and if it's registered they will return it. If not it should become yours after the legal holding time for your country. Can the owners find you if you switch it on? That sounds like a "can I use this without being discovered" type of question, if they have an implanted GPS recovery tracker chip they will be able to fly to your location undercover of darkness & invade your guilty dreams!!
hi i noticed this unit has a max speed function. so, if i were to drive in a car, or strap this onto a bike, it will give me my max speed i have drived or max speed i have peddled? thanks
I purchased a mini tracker, can hardly see the screen, this is heaps better! Thanks

You are good at making reviews and this has helped alot

I bet it’s not now, after another 13 years since your comment.

So to mark your current location, you just go to MARK, identify a name for the waypoint ("001" in this video), and hit "OK" ?

Do you have to mark a way point before the man will record your trail or can you set it to always record a trail?
Nice review, Thanks for sharing.
Will this give you an OS Grid reference and can you put OS Grids in to it? Sorry if it's obvious, have never used any handheld gps.
If you don't have a waypoint, can it just track your route in and out of the woods, and get you back to the place where you started.
Thanks for this! Has made my mind up and I'm going to get one
If I get to a location in the woods that I want to remember can I ask "where am I?" and recieve lats and longs?
Thanks Joseph!
can u take a Grid References and Bearing on it
What type, brand, of camera did you use to record this? Thanks for the help!
Can you input coordinates into this unit?
is there a limit to how far away a way point can be, like if i enter a way-point at a place thats 1 1/2 hours away from my house, if i go back to my house will it show me on the compass were that waypoint is even though its so for away
‘Global’ Positioning System!
What's the best gps to buy to travel different countries and continents even on a boat ?
Will this work on a moutain bike ?
