My grandpa just gave this to me like a month ago and trying to figure out how to use it.. Realizing this device is an old device. Just wondering if this device is worth keeping. ???
If you’re ever out in the woods you can use your latitude and longitude to plot on a paper map for your position. If you ever discover something interesting you can use the mark function on your device so you can discover it later. As far as basics this is a perfect little device.
He probably don't know those places since they are just samples preloaded into the gps but once you get your unit you name each as way point and just choose whatever way point you want to go to at that moment.
they take a special cord, has a specific plug that only fits the Garmin, and they have a 9 pin connector for on the computer. It will only work on computers that have a open available connector.
this first gen hikers gps are not for secure driving or secure coastal chart navigation.. there are way better than a compass, better if you complement of a map. Most have retroilumination and have good functionality if you acquire 3 or more sattelites - They give -when 3 or more satelites acquered- , coordinates, bearing, velocity and can give Estimated Time Arrival if you save waypoints previously. Sure you can hike alone in a mountain or cross the ocean or you can use it if you screwd your electrical equipment..
I must admit I've been Geocaching with this exact Garnin I think it's great I've only had to reboot it once since I bought it in 2007 and it's the only gps I've had. As far as accuracy it's really pretty good. I found my first cache in Manhattan and it had no problems and never lost satellite reception. It's only Dow side is caching under dense tree cover, it tends to lose satellite reception. For the money it has been a great gps. I have used and abused this gps and cannot tell you how m
I bought one of these new many years ago, and never really used it. Now that I need a GPS, I have found this thing to be pretty worthless. First of all, I don't need all those features, which just makes it harder to use. This thing does show actual coordinates (degrees, minutes, and seconds, which is what I need, but the numbers are way too small to see outside, even with a magnifying glass. Second, how do you tell if these coordinates are where you are actually located at the time, or those of a "waypoint" some distance away? I have a Garmin Nuvi in my car for finding places, but it does not give actual coordinates. Under "location" are a long list of numbers that mean nothing to me, like 12S VB 18459673263. I often drive and ride a motorcycle on out of the way roads, and if I have a breakdown, I have no way of knowing my exact location. I have a road service plan, but no way to tell them where I am. Any ideas?
That long list of numbers is MGRS or Military Grid Reference System. If it is giving you a 10 digit coordinate then that gives your location down to 1 square meter. very useful if you and the person looking for you knows how to read it. You can change this in your setting under setup>units>position frmt Many people prefer latitude and longitude, which you can set it to. Garmin also has a PDF of the manual online for all software versions but considering your comment is 4 years old, I’d say you probably don’t have this anymore.
dumbest gadget ever made as it never functions timely and carries no common logic to operate. The compass is inaccurate, and overall its functionality is rogue. You will never find your way back, guaranteed. Just get an older cell phone(no service required as its GPS reception is free), download (via Wi-Fi) the area of interest you will visit using google maps, have a couple charged batteries and you can go/find anything within 5-10 feet accuracy! With the cell phone, you can magnify and see a real view of the area.

just got one of these. it is my first GPS and am looking foward to learning to use it.
Bought one at an estate sale, cleaned it up, fresh batteries but it won't power on. Is there a reset somewhere?
can this gps be used for navigating reefs for diving in the ocean?does it need Wi-Fi or.updates?
Can you change the glass when it becomes too scratched
That's good but you select way point 4 or 5 etc how do you know where those places are?

You mark them as you are going. Or you have been there before and want to find your way back to the waypoint you have marked
Is this gps usable for the sea?
Does it track you to a waypoint in straight lines, or backwards along the breadcrumb trail? Straight lines may be impossible...a wide lake for example
good question

Nothing wrong with my one. Was yours set up properly?
Not a bad tutorial, but you mumble the end of every sentence and the point is somewhat lost.
