It seems these kinds of clothes were for the well-to-do. Normal people wouldn't be able to afford all that fabric, especially better fabrics like silk, or a dresser to help get it all on. During the American civil war, women could only afford inexpensive fabrics and less of them.😊

I help the doctor cut off legs. No hoop skirts there. A bloody apron.. Certain rules in reacting. You had to be a Atlanic. It's a shame that all my stuff burned when my house burned down. When my eldest child was born, the mid wife use to come every day till the baby was 10 days or just 10 times depending on when you were allowed out of hospital. The nurse was old school so wanted to know why I wasn't putting a libitybodice on my son. That was a smaller garment that went over the vest. My answer was that the nurse in hospital had said that I didn't have to as they were going out of Fashion as there's no real benefit also it helped with reducing of baby not over heating with to many clothes on. 😊❤😂
If I had to dress that way today, I'd need to start my day at 4 a.m. & employ a dresser! What an ordeal, just getting into, & out of your clothes every day... and don't forget that people changed wardrobes multiple times daily! You wouldn't want to wear the same clothes for dinner, that you wore for breakfast or lunch... heaven forbid!! Then there's the issue of what to do about visiting the powder room... especially if it wasn't INSIDE the house! Horrors! ❤❤
I think they changed several times a day because they didn't have deodorant or a shower so they had to change because they stunk up the clothes with body odor !!
I think most of the same under layers could work for other dresses prob. For the bathroom they had split drawers which means the crotch is not sewn closed so you don’t have to take anything off to use the bathroom. They also had chamber pots they could use to pee in which made it more convenient.
So much wisdom in making the detachable collar & inner sleeves. That way they could be worn with any number of dresses!!! My lands! What a lof of clothing pieces!!! I'm afraid I'd be late for every event!!! Thank you for sharing!!! The end product is BEAUTIFUL!!!!! So is the elegant room & Christmas tree!!!!! And I LOVE the music. So I wonder if Tudor fashion 'quirks' were making a comeback in the 1850s, because they did that too! They're called false undersleeves (official term), and they were *gorgeous*!
The night wear is my favorite . I do love the dress also . I always wished when I was younger . That I could find a dress like that to try on . I always admire that Era of clothing. 😍🥰💖

fairly easily--the steel hoops in the hoop-skirt *bend*! 🤭 no need to make backless chairs vanish under your voluminous skirts! although if you had a bustle (which put the majority of the skirt's volume in the back), then you kinda sat to the side/ on your hip.
I can't imagine cooking and canning on a wood stove with so many layers! Summer must have been absolute hell. No wonder so many women used to pass out.
All the layers would have been cotton/linen. And extant garments have shown that many summer dresses were made of a cotton so thin that it was basically gauze. So sheer that if you didn't have the underlayers on you'd be able to see right through it. Also, the natural fabrics are a lot cooler than rayon/polyester/modern mixes. Having done historical reenactment, ide rather be in this than a pair of jeans in the middle of summer

You forgot one important item: every single woman wore a corset cover ! It is a light cotton white embroided blouse with lace, but it was part of the “arsenal” . No way I ever dress like that in a million years, but yes, it was pretty to look at…..
I was going to mention the missing corset cover too 😅 but at least she had the bust improvers, most people forget about those. The corset cover helped cover up the lines of the corset through the dress to smooth out the silhouette. It was essential part of the under garments.

The planet was going through a mini ice age back then, so temperatures were much lower than today, even in summer, that's why so many layers were needed. Also, only the rich could afford a chimney fire in every room of the house, the middle class only heated the living room during the day and the bedrooms only at night, while the poor all huddled in one room for warmth. My great grandmothers lived long lives and told me stories. When the temperatures rose in the early 1900's, less and less layers were worn. In the early 1800, it was another warmer period so empire waist gowns without corsets were worn.

fairly easily--the steel hoops in the hoop-skirt *bend*! 🤭 no need to make backless chairs vanish under your voluminous skirts!
although if you had a bustle (which put the majority of the skirt's volume in the back), then you kinda sat to the side/ on your hip.

I can't imagine cooking and canning on a wood stove with so many layers! Summer must have been absolute hell. No wonder so many women used to pass out.
All the layers would have been cotton/linen. And extant garments have shown that many summer dresses were made of a cotton so thin that it was basically gauze. So sheer that if you didn't have the underlayers on you'd be able to see right through it. Also, the natural fabrics are a lot cooler than rayon/polyester/modern mixes. Having done historical reenactment, ide rather be in this than a pair of jeans in the middle of summer

You forgot one important item: every single woman wore a corset cover ! It is a light cotton white embroided blouse with lace, but it was part of the “arsenal” . No way I ever dress like that in a million years, but yes, it was pretty to look at…..

I was going to mention the missing corset cover too 😅 but at least she had the bust improvers, most people forget about those.
The corset cover helped cover up the lines of the corset through the dress to smooth out the silhouette. It was essential part of the under garments.
