  • Solving a switching puzzle at Brett.. I mentioned casually out loud that I was scratching my head over a switching job on Brett. My wife took and interest in trying to fix the 'problem'. She then used her phone to video the moves.

Having a limited amount of room for a layout, I started looking into HO scale shelf layouts when I noticed your series of Brett videos. This is exactly the type of layout that I want to build - limited structures, limited scenery, limited activity yet functional. Thank you for sharing this series and the inspiration that you have provided for me.

I had fun creating a subtle background track.. birds, traffic, occasional dog barks etc .. played through a couple of old pc speakers . Must have another go for Greenville :-)

+Mog Thanks Martin, life has been super busy with work and coaching kids sports. I hit a snag and couldn't get the pink underfoam for my layout anywhere within 2.5hrs of my house. But last week I got lucky and got a hold of some on a trip south. So the plan is, after baseball season ends (june), I'll be able to finally get going again.

Hi OMG Train... thanks, much appreciated :-) Brett has gone into retirement for now whilst I work on my next layout (Greenville) but it worked very well as an 'operating' layout for me.

When you couple back up, you should wait a little bit to simulate releasing the brakes, not just bang into them and push them on down the track.

Thanks. Learning all the time (this was over 2 years ago). Often when I run sessions off-camera, I do just that. And wait for Frank to walk to the next switch lever and throw it before moving off :-)

Great switching tops video! What do you use to uncouple the cars?

Ravenna Railfan 4070 thanks.. usually something like a bamboo skewer or I also use an old paintbrush handle

What is the length and width of layout? This layout is simple but effective.

Hi David, Thanks for your interest.. Brett is (was) 8 feet x 1 foot. I describe a little more about the plan in one of my other vids too.

jesus man can't sit on that Xing so long. if it has enough traffic to justify flashers then prob can't foul it like that. your second move u should have sluffed all three cars. then after you ran around your atw car pull em back to the main. faster and keeps your xings clear. and if trying to be proto then don't make a joint and change directions so fast. asking alot of your ground man to make joint and run to other end to protect shove. love your layout. keep up the videos. I especially love the bennet all door boxcar. I own the shortline that serves that mill. :-)

Cheers Stan.. all a learning process for me. The road is something I started wishing that I hadn't included too late into the build. In my imagination it has no major traffic - so , yes, should have removed the lights. All good stuff to take into the next build :-)
(Re the slow running - actually usually if I'm not videoing I do tend to take a lot longer - imagining the man on the ground making his moves)
      Thanks for your interest!

+Mog from what I can see the flashers are there because of poor visibility for the cars account hardware store. so block it all you want. its your RR. :-)
