This so underappreciated by most commenters here. You can see in the video the car is very, very good. But two other things really stand out: the tires make almost no noise (so clearly very soft) and Christian is a fantastic driver.
It's weird seeing such a good driver getting around in Auto mode tho!

It should be street legal already, even though it is weaker than GT3 (and cheaper: GT3 costs about $450K and GT4 is "just" 250K).
Again: No slicks or cutted slick-tyres were used for the lap time. AMG will offer two different versions of the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 for the AMG GT R. A normal one, like it is available for the GT S, and a special one for track driving with a more sticky compound. BUT: Both versions of Cup 2 for the AMG GT R are fully street legal! You can compare the sticky Cup 2 for AMG GT R with the Cup 2 for the Corvette Z06. The grip level feels pretty similar!

Yeah it is. But it's pretty normal. GTR has no restrictor; so full 580 hp turbo against 550 hp atmo for GT3. And GTR has less aero. It's uphill, so with a good driver who knows the lines, he can keep up, just for that part. But Merc GT3 is so f@cking beautiful :)

Funny the merc is clearly on slicks you can even see them at the start, and the GT3 still shits on it.
This was an independent test so why would it have slicks? Where exactly did you see slicks on it? The GT3 race car is about 300kg lighter than the GT R and has massively more aerodynamic grip. A modern day GT3 without success ballast would easily do sub 6:50.

Does it matter? Regardless of rear wheel or all wheel drive, the time it takes to complete 1 lap is how you logically measure how fast a thing is on this stretch of German made bitumen.

When you're looking after the last seconds on the ring or the last tenths on a regular track, tires are everything. Everybody remember this crazy frenchie who patiently managed to get under 10' with a tiny Citroen AX diesel (58hp). Aside from his sheer dedication, his two keypoints were the "added lightness", à la Chapman, and the Yokohama Advan A048. Standard cheapo Michelin would have needed at least one MINUTE more...

Leety McLeet LOL this is the Laptime of the Porsche 918 Spyder with "Weissach package tuning" (lighter, more horsepower), the regular (stock) Laptime of Porsche 918 Spyder on Nürburgring is 7:13, and besides the AMG GTR had not even slicks on it only normal road tires, i am sure it will create with Slicks the laptime under 7 minutes, inform you better before you play here the "smart aleck", wish you a nice 2017 ;)

Honestly, looking at the lap, it could've been even better. Being passed by the GT3 car there was some time lost. If it were hotter there would have probably been more grip... Maybe I'm wrong, but I definitely feel there's more time in the car. Outstanding.

Hi Christian, congratulations, amazing lap and no 4 point harness! Did this car have ceramic brakes and AMG Track package with roll cage? We will be testing and playing with our AMG GTR at the ring next spring and summer.

All the butthurts complaining it had the Slicks because it just beat the 918 (as per this magazine's lap records) with all the hybrid tech, awd and around 5 times the price.
It's not about being butthurt, 99,99% of us can't afford this car or a class of its league, we don't work at Porsche, Ferrari or Nissan, and this really doesn't have any direct impact on our lives. We have absolutely no reason to be butthurt, we're not kids idolatring a brand like it's a sport team or something.
It's just that we are car guys, and it's really intriguing that this car is claimed to be faster around the Nordschleife than a track-focused 1600kg mid-engined 887hp AWD hybrid hypercar in what are presented as "similar conditions". On paper it doesn't make any form of sense. And it's not even like when the GT-R's laps didn't make sense, because in fact the electronics at the time were beyond anything in its segment.
You could argue that AMG built a revolutionary car tech-wise, but there is no tech used here that is clearly superior to what Porsche had back in 2012, nothing at all. The 918 couldn't have ran out of juice, because it has a 6.8kwH battery and energy recovery, and it has probably been designed exclusively to be able to do a full lap at the Nürb.
Now here are the explanations: these aren't similar conditions. The Track has been repaved in some parts, it's not the same driver, the 918 was driven in an hotter day (the 918's batteries heat up a lot) and as far as i know AMG did more adjustment on the car here than Porsche at the time.
I'm not trying to the take credit from Mercedes, just clarifying.
Kaisuke971 I respect your opinion. It may look like it doesn't have much tech but you have to go through all the official videos of it to see all the gizmos it has. Also 50-80% of the total downforce is produced by the underbody and merc has really concentrated on it. Ask a F1 aero expert about how good is an exhaust blown double diffuser is, he will tell you that it is the most efficient and effective way to produce downforce with negligible drag plus it has a CF stiffening structure stuck on it's chassis. I dont think anything in the current market offers any of this. There is also has an active aero element at the front end which lowers itself at higher speed to again produce downforce without drag.
Do some research on aerodynamics then you will know the importance and effectiveness of these devices. Also on a side note, The holy trinity of hybrid hypercars aren't really that good with aero, downforce and mechanical grip compared to real racecars. That's why the Viper ACR even though it's not nearly as powerful but is on par with them.
Satwik Basu I'm not saying it doesn't have much tech, because obviously this car got a massive diffuser and i reckon the wing has a bigger surface than the ones on the sort of 911 GT3 or Viper TA 2.0, plus it has all wheel steering, great engine this 4.0 and probably GT3-derived suspensions.
Technologically speaking, this is probably the most advanced sport car on the market right now, it seems to have that one step above the GT3RS, but it's not hypercar level though. Could you compare this to the P1 ? No. The 918 Weissach ? no. It's still one step below, these cars have carbon tubs, mid engine setups, the P1 has a completely unique suspension, the 918 has the best hybrid system yet...
That's what i'm saying. It's not like this car has something the others don't, the element that would make me and many others go "Oh that's why". And the 7 Series has "carbon core" i reckon what you're talking about is a similar technique. But it's still inferior to a full carbon chassis.
And the P1 has the second best downforce on the market so it's not bad either. I think right after it is the 918 as well.

Special Cup2s like the Corvette has. You can buy them from AMG. Street legal. But i guess more grip than the "!normal" Cup2 from the Porsche 918!
Props to AMG if they sell this car with that particular compound on the Sport Cup 2's (the tires were nearly silent the entire lap), but clearly the car is extremely capable and Christian's skills are exceptional. Sport Auto: please have a big comparison test with other top contenders soon with Christian driving them all....

That's the way they have always done laps round the ring. The lap starts right before the first corner and ends right after the last corner

Same carbon ceramics I'm guessing. This car is probably specced with Carbon Ceramics and the track package which include the stickier Sport Cup 2's

The Mercedes reaches the same top speed as the 918 on the döttinger Höhe+the driver is a bit more aggressive than mr von saurma in the 918 supertest lap+tire development is super fast these days. Just remember the zr1, it did a lot of lap records in it's last production year when it got the then new Michelins

The time is probably .7-.8 tenths faster as that's about how much he gave up when he gave way for the AMG GT3 to pass, you can see that on his lap timer.
If this lap time was really made with Sport Cup 2 tyres and with regular AMG GTR not 'optimized' by AMG for this test, then Porsche is really in trouble with their GT3 and especially GT3 RS model.
But how can it be that the AMG GTR can make this time with the power-to-weight ratio that it has? I cannot understand.

Read again! Porsche used the "old" Cup2 normal tyres. AMG has new one, special ones, like the Corvette. Also the Nordschleife got on at least one party of it better tarmac, and the temperatur was pretty low, thats good for maximum horsepower.

Calm down guys. BMW may not have something this fast at the moment but I'm sure they'll come up with something. Please don't compare this to an M4 GTS. I find it interesting that Porsche fans/drivers aren't on here throwing shade....Maybe it's a class thing.
the apex speed in speedmeter is not super fast,just similiar to the 488,why the laptime is so much faster
