    I like that idea of the gravity fed manure set up. Really like your barn and cattle.

    • @macfarms
      @macfarms  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Brent. The gravity system is nice but we have had some issues in the summer with it plugging up put in the sump, more dry manure that time of year. It’s not a huge deal, happens maybe once a year.

You had a subject and did very well......."maybe" some of your past videos were just a video to say you uploaded one that day but this video shows your capability and your access to great subject material. In this video your attitude was upbeat, kept the conversation going, etc.. Keep this up and the Channel will soar!!!!

    Nice big clean barn👍there very few barns in Australia as most cow herds spend there time outside all year round but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t get cold as milk plants are exposed like -6oC in winter . I have milk in small 8 double up to big 60 stand rotary dairies. Grandma had 13 double up, milking 110 Jerseys cows.

    • @macfarms
      @macfarms  5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great Video and thanks for the barn tour! Nice open set up with loads of space for the cows to act natural. But with such an open space do you ever have problems with the parlour freezing up in winter

    • @macfarms
      @macfarms  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No issues at all, we close up the big windows in the barn and can keep it just above freezing in the parlour and freestall all winter long. Ventilation is still very good with the chimneys in the roof. The milk house on cold days we will run the heat pump and keep it warmer in there.

    • @macfarms
      @macfarms  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Usually once a year it will plug just where the sump is, usually can just push it around a bit with the Hitachi and it will go, there is an enormous amount of suction on it, doesn’t take much.

  • @farmingthemitten5272

    The quota system must work, We milk 2000 here in the states and were going broke. The unfortunate side effect is in order to survive we have to continuously grow or we go and going would probably result in prison time due to the amount of bad debt accumulated. It blows my mind that in 2019 50 cows in Canada can support several families yet here in the states 50 cows comfortably supported the same but in 1940. I mean zero disrespect by the way! You have a beautiful place.

    • @macfarms
      @macfarms  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! I agree, the quota system certainly has its advantages, I’d much rather milk 50 cows vs a couple hundred if at the end of the day I’ll have the same $$ in my pocket. I do feel bad for the people that want to get into it but can’t because if the high start up costs though. I don’t think the US has it figured out, from my perspective it just seems to end up being a race to the bottom, I’m glad that some people can make a go of it though.

    • @Gixzer04
      @Gixzer04 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Farming the Mitten I’m thinking the exact same. Let alone all the automation this place has. Obviously he hasn’t downgraded since he’s locked in so that means 50 cows paid for this not 1200. Crazy. I can’t imagine some of the huge dairies income now up there.

    • @macfarms
      @macfarms  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Redhawkfarmsllc well it’s worth mentioning that they started the milk quota in 1970 and we built the barn between 2007-2012 around there. So it wasn’t easy for us by any means, and we milked in an old stanchion barn for a lot of years before we could afford the new barn, and on top of that we did 90% of the work ourselves to cut costs. It worked out for us but I wouldn’t say we are a typical example of a 50 cow dairy up here either. Now, as far as the large farms up here I’m sure they do bring in a lot of money, but it’s a lot of overhead getting there and they can’t grow any faster that anyone else really. A big farm up here would be 400 cows, I know of a few that are larger in the province but there isn’t many.

    Hey Mac, just wondering what your ceiling in the barn is made of?

    • @macfarms
      @macfarms  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m not sure what the brand is but it’s like a styrofoam with white woven plastic laminated on one side and a shiny reflective layer on the other side. The walls in the freestall are the same thing. I think the Ag-tuff plastic is a better way to go but it’s probably more money too.

    yes I do not mind the quota just the over piece to buy more quota's we had to we are now maxed in the barn my family wanted to go much bigger had 100 cows to 300 cows my brother was milking 100 cows as well here have 6 step-sisters and 6 step-brothers my brother have dairy herds to they did the some 6 of them now milk 300 head each I am the only child for my parents they were married before they meet the age between is 18 years different I know the mistake child
    they did put in up for adoption too
    my dad's grandparents adopted me they are 103 and 107 now they were in milk cows to 7 years ago we got out of it we kept 4 cows just to have farm milk what we do not need the neighbour's pigs to get the milk exit week we are butchering 40 pigs and 60 cows the hunter all wanted have pig and have cow too for the wild meat this year have 20 buffalos to do too like the meat as well the Indians will tan the hides for me I am very big in to leather works with some of the Indians

    • @macfarms
      @macfarms  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well I think making it hard to go bigger was kind of one of the idea's behind the quota system, it all has it's pro's and cons. Thanks for watching.
