The Rise And Fall Of Toys R Us

  • Toys R Us is closing its doors for good. The toy emporium that Charles P. Lazarus envisioned has been reduced to dusty floors and empty shelves.
Much has been said about the demise of the toy empire, which announced its plan to liquidate. There have been fingers pointed at corporate raiders, Amazon and big-box stores. All contributed to its undoing.
Ultimately, though, Toys R Us' collapse is a story of loyalty run dry. The store in its early days fostered devotion from customers and toymakers. In the end, it lost hold on both.

When I was a young man I worked at Toys R Us while going to tech school. After a little over twenty years working at another career and becoming partially disabled I could not do my career anymore.I went back to Toys R Us and with my disabilities they hired me and I worked there for three years before becoming fully disabled.I want to thank Toys R Us for working with me during a rough part of my life. They were very kind and patient with me.I want to thank John and Mike (sorry they may not want there last names on here) for helping me and I wish them the best in their future endeavors. They were a "TRU" (Toys R Us) Family.

I think Toys R Us died way before Amazon. I think it was when Walmart/Target started getting big in the late 90s/early 2000s. They were able to one-stop shopping, including all of the toys that Toys R Us did. So it kind didn't make sense for Toys R Us to exist when people could get the same toys at the superstores,, in addition to all of their other shopping needs. It's sad because I remember how special it was to have a dedicated "toy" store.

In my opinion, they didn't have to close all their stores. They could have survived. All they had to do was close their Babies R Us stores and free standing traditional size stores. They could have left all their smaller express stores open in the shopping malls. The express stores were much smaller and only had toys, games, and game systems just like all the traditional stores did when previous generations were growing up with Toys R Us in the decades past. I think the express stores would have gotten enough business during the holidays that the company could have emerged from bankruptcy and come out in decent shape. Eventually, they could have opened more express stores in other shopping malls as time went on and they got to be in better financial shape. The rent on an express store would have been much cheaper than their traditional size freestanding stores because they would have been using much less square footage.

I miss Toys R Us. There was something so special about having a "toy store" growing up as a child. I remember when I grew up (80s-90s), there was only one location about 20 mins away, and we would only get to go on special occasions (birthdays, Christmas time). It made the trips so special and memorable. There's something so odd about going to Target (or even ordering off Amazon now) to get my kids gifts, lol. The experience and memories of going to Toys R Us with my family are things I will always cherish!

i remember, i think in 1999-2006 i always went to toysrus, but then I started to grow up and just got lazy. i either went to argos or ordered of amazon to get my stuff. but no matter what, if i saw a toysrus i always went inside to see one toy. a batman toy

Damn..I would've NEVER thought that my childhood excitement would end. Every week me and my family should get up early to see is we had our first names on a car license plate. And that place help me find action figures to help finish my first grade project. Thanks Amazon... 😒

Agree, although I think Toys R Us started dying way before Amazon. They hung on over the years, but they have slowly been declining for years. Amazon was just the nail in the coffin. It's sad because I remember how special it was to have a dedicated "toy" store.

I agree with you. My shopping habits are a combination of mall shopping and internet shopping. Having both forms of shopping give the customers power to choose which leads to better valves. There is room for both types of shopping environments. Supporting our local malls and it's department stores is just as important as supporting the online sales. Its a win for everyone across the board and that is what the focus shoould be.

madamhummingbird I agree also what hinders the mall experience is the "oh I can find it cheaper online" we all want a deal I think the best match for this is price matching despite the lost or make it a price match with other corporation.

I remember two particular visits to Toys R Us. First time, which was in Uppsala if I'm not wrong, I got a white and blue toy tram with 4 sections. I still do own it. If anyone wants to know what the tram looks like, "The Staten Island Railfanner" has the exact same one: th-cam.com/video/M5KndcHXLp8/w-d-xo.html
The second visit was in December 2015 to the Toys R Us in Luleå. The thing I remember the most from there is a 15g chocolate plate called "Mini-Muh".

The toy industry is dying. Kids these days only want electronics to play games on. They are getting addicted, getting anger issues when disturbed, don't go out often, exposed to danger on online game chats, losing social skills and slowly killing their eyes.
Where did the fun in playing go?

    • @davishollis898
      @davishollis898 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

it is called being a child most kids get mad when their parents interrupt while playing they are in fact not losing social skills because most of the time spent on electronics is spent socializing it is not killing their eyes that is a myth that has been disproved several times but it is expanding their attention spanes.

Unsociable parents letting kids live their lives in basements is still hurting the game industry, let alone being outside. Young kids nowadays simply blow up and the adults playing the same games simply stop talking leading in breakdown in the community. They do this in real life too! I'm going back to college and while only 26, these younger kids are afraid to socialize with people outside of their cliques. They also go berserk at work. We're a generation or two behind addressing the root of the problem and kids grow up isolated.

That’s capitalism and sadly that’s what makes our country so great. You see where a communist country would control and monopolize its businesses and therefore the incentive to improve is nonexistent because there is no competition and there is no incentive to improve. It ultimately spelled doom for the Soviets. Their businesses were not ever trimming the fat and improving.

Because I would rather see the product in person and buy it locally than buy it online. Then I don’t have to wait for shipping at all.

My mom told me her memory and it’s this: her grandma took her and her sister and anyone who wanted to come to toys r us. The person who’s birthday it was got to fill a full cart and the other kids shared a cart and got to fill it together. When my mom told me they were closing I said to her you know really? That’s very sad I mean toys r us has been around for so long :(. She told me Walmart and mason were taking over making things easier and making people kinda lasier :( it’s a sad day for toys r us and I hope it lives in our hearts forever my heart goes out for babies and toys r us 😰

ShamuStars yeah I know what you mean. I'm 42 and I remember being a kid in the 1980s and I would get a kick out of seeing those Toys R Us commercials (Jeffrey and his family) during Thundercats or He-man and the Masters of the Universe. Now it feels like someone has taken a part of my childhood. I never thought I would see the day when Toys R Us would closed down. 😣

    • @trickycharm

amazon has destroyed toys r us. next thing you know, amazon makes it own grocery store, i dont get how people prefer amazon over getting in their car and driving to a store. besides, wouldnt you get things faster going to a store in stead of waiting for an order? also all kids find entertaining these days is staring a phone.

Toys R Us flourished in the 80s because of the toy boom creativity which marketed to kids via classic cartoons and comics such as g.i.joe, transformers, voltron, robotech, thundercats, cabbage patch kids, etc. Nothing will ever come close to the awe a child felt when stepping into that toy store.

This is just makes me glad I was born at just the right time. My younger cousins won't get the luxury of the kinds of toys my siblings and I got. Toys nowadays, particularly after the liquidation of Toys R' Us, are just repurposed old plastic that constantly cuts corners.
