Petula Clark was a big international star, older than most of the bands and other who came across the Pond to the USA. She was a polished professional, a child actress before and singer. Born November 15, 1932, she dazzle us all with her first USA hit "Downtown," performed on Ed Sullivan numerous times and got her own TV special within a few years, guest starred on many variety shows including the Dean Martin Show. She could sing in Italian, German and French as well, had many foreign hits. she was areat looking gal, and geat singer/[performer, always cheerful, and brightened up our lives with every new song. When her voice Same on the radio with a new song, with no introduction b the DJ, you KNEW it was her, a very distinct voice. Even the parents enjoyed her. she's still around at age 91!!!!

The great Ms Petulia Clark is a UK icon starting as a child singer, radio star and a film actress way back in the 1940s. She even had a newspaper comic strip for a moment. She was on every major TV variety show from like the mid 1960s into the mid 1970s. A total pro, petite, sweet, bright and oh so British. Try another UK ( actually Irish ) legend Dusty Springfield who can and will blow your mind with her voice, appearance and performances.

Pet had a long string of hits and her popularity bridged generations. She had success in Europe for years before her first US hit, Downtown, became a classic hit in 1964 followed by I Know a Place and one hit after another until 1968. Her internet discography begins in 1949. She did movies and plenty of TV shows. She had been a WW II era child radio singing star in England along with Julie Andrews but her publicists worked to make the US public think she was younger than she was (31 when Downtown was a hit.). She has always been charming and scandal-free. No tabloid copy.

It's so different listening to this at 67 rather than 11. The basic tenet of the song, storming off in a huff unnecessarily after a minor relationship kerfuffle, went right over my head back in the day. It's a beautifully assembled piece of song-craft, full of ear-candy.
As much as I preferred the rockier representations of contemporary music, the appeal and strength of Pet's performance coupled with the delightfully listenable track was undeniable.

This sound is TRULY of the mid 1960's, it wasn't all Rock and Motown. People forget or keep rewriting musical history to their musical preferences...you know what screw them , I was f-ing THERE and lived that history!!!!!!! My hats off to you for tackling this and learning the TRUTH!!! You sounded like you had no clue, but Charlie Chaplin was the same one who was a pioneer in the silent movies from about 1914 on and did some sound motives in the 1930's, 40'.s 50's [he... was...hilarious...] and occasionally beyond. He wrote This is My Song, a huge hit for Petula [she almost turned it down]....he had also written the classic Song Smile [ "when your heart is aching, smile, even though it's breaking, "]

I had a huge crush on her and bought her albums… she married a Frenchman and was very ‘European’ which influenced her work… As someone else has said she’s been a familiar face forever and a national treasure so far as I’m concerned. Not so many years ago - relatively 😉 - she played the lead in the London production of Sunset Boulevard which was electrifying. ‘Just One Look’ from the Soundtrack of that production would be a treat and right of your radar!

Did you ever hear "Downtown" by Petula Clark? It's easily one of her most memorable songs. Not sure if you ever watched or even like the old 90s comedy "Seinfeld", but I always think of a specific episode when the song Downtown is mentioned. The episode, "The Bottle Deposit" is from Season 7:
SCENE 1: George Costanza's boss (Wilheim) scolded George earlier in the day for not paying attention, and circumstanses have again resulted in George not hearing exactly what his boss wants him to do that day:
WILHEIM: Well, I'm very interested to see how this thing turns out.
GEORGE (to himself): Yeah, you said it. (to Wilheim) Uh, excuse me, Mr Wilhelm. Uh, do you really think... Well, is this downtown trip really necessary, you know, for the project?
WILHEIM: Oh no, you've got to go downtown, George. It's all downtown. Just like the song says.
    GEORGE: The song?
    WILHEIM: There's your answer. Downtown.
SCENE 2: Jerry Seinfeld is sitting with George in a booth at Monks Diner:
JERRY: The song Downtown? You mean the Petula Clark song?
    GEORGE: Yeah.
JERRY: You sure he didn't just mention it because you happened to be going downtown?
GEORGE: I think he was trying to tell me something, like it had some sort of a meaning.
JERRY: Okay, so how does it go?
GEORGE: 'When you're alone, and life is making you lonely, you can always go...'
    JERRY: '... downtown.'
GEORGE: 'Maybe you know some little places to go, where they never close...'
    JERRY: '...downtown.'
GEORGE: Wait a second. 'Little places to go, where they never close.' What's a little place that never closes?
    JERRY: Seven-eleven?
GEORGE: 'Just listen to the music of the traffic, in the city. Linger on the sidewalk, where the neon lights are pretty.' Where the neon lights are pretty. The Broadway area?
    JERRY: No, that's midtown.
GEORGE: 'The lights are much brighter there. You can forget all your troubles, forget all your cares, just go...'
    JERRY: '...down town.'
GEORGE: 'Things'll be great, when you're...'
    JERRY: '...downtown.'
GEORGE: I got nothing, Jerry. Nothing.
JERRY: Well, 'don't hang around and let your troubles surround you. There are movie shows...'
GEORGE: You think I should come clean? What d'you think, you think I should confess?
    JERRY: How can you lose?
