- The Lost Coast 4x4 Trail is a 177 mile overland adventure through the dirt backroads and byways of Northern California's Lost Coast. Come along with the OTG crew as we camp near wild and rugged beaches, explore coastlines with fantastic vistas, visit sea lion and elephant colonies, and pay homage to an abandoned lighthouse at the northern end of the Lost Coast.

The Lost Sierra is a fantastic place to explore, but it's a solid 5 hour drive to get from the LC to LS. It's definitely a drive from Socal, but the Smith River NRA (steelhead Adventure Trail) is only a couple hours north of Humboldt redwoods, and insanely gorgeous with the crowds.
@@OverlandTrailGuides Yeah I was checking that area out on Gaia. May just end up visiting a lot of Northern California for a month. I'm a geologist and a big gold rush history buff so the LS is a must do. Shasta Trinity is also high on the list. Thanks again!

The road down to the campground from the needles visitor center has been closed for years. It's an amazing hike in tent only campground.

I did this route based on your guide in July. Awesome trip, but Usal Beach on the Fourth of July was a huge mistake. Hoping to go back sometime during a quieter season.
Haha yes, I stay far away from Usal on busy holiday weekends. In fact, I prefer winter when the park sees very light usage! AW Way and Needle Rock are two great alternatives, but quite a bit further north from SF and Sac.
Unfortunately it's no longer the Lost Coast.

Usal Beach on a Saturday evening in May was absolutely PACKED. If you want any sort of remoteness Usal is a place to avoid. I'm not sure what kept me up until 3am the most, the music or the fireworks!

Great video. Thanks for creating and sharing. The majority of the roads, though, look like a Prius could handle them. 4wd recommended? (I don’t have a Prius, just curious about need for 4x or AWD)
I wouldn't take a 2WD on the route. You could pull it off in a Subaru, but it's gonna be quite bumpy and uncomfortable from Usal beach to 4 corners unless you've got aftermarket suspension.
2WD trucks can do it no problem.
Great drone footages. Are there places to fuel up along the way?
I think there's a gas station at shelter cove. Be prepared to pay top dollar as its off the beaten path so to say. Fish and chips at the little diner is always good, just watch out for seagulls. They will steal your fish.
Awesome trip. Do you know if dispersed camping is available in the Kings Range Conservation Area? Especially along Saddle Mountain Road... views look incredible. Seems like it's BLM land so I'm hoping so.
You'd think it'd be permitted since the BLM manages it, but for car campers, you'll need to stay at one of the designated BLM campgrounds as dispersed camping is not permitted outside of the King Range NCA wilderness areas (where vehicles aren't allowed). Great video Ben. Is this trail doable in a 2WD TRUCK LSD ?
The access down to Windy Point on the north end of the lost coast is 4-wheel drive only. Two wheel drive try it, and end up tearing the road up trying to get out. You can walk south from the Mattole Campground at the mouth of the river to the lighthouse.
Could you do that route with a jeep towing a very small teardrop trailer?
Would that ride be suitable for a small offroad trailer? 4x7 with decent clearance. My only apprehension is having to turn around in a tight spot.
You'll be fine! The only place with trail traffic is on the way into Usal beach and there's more than enough room for people heading out to back up and let you by. Once you get past Usal, you'll probably only pass a few vehicles on the dirt roads not a whole lot of trail traffic north of there.

What northern Cali trails do you recommend for a stock 2x4 tacoma?
As long as you're avoiding the mud, the Mendocino and Six Rivers Backcountry Discovery Trails would both suit your needs. You can probably explore most of the Lassen and Plumas BDTs as well, just avoid poker flat in Plumas and you'll be fine.

Indeed, but it gets super windy up there and dispersed camping is not permitted in the King Range NCA or Sinkyone State Park.
Looking to camp at Usal in the upper campground and head over on the trail and end up Mattole Beach. We are towing a 16 ft Basecamp. Is this possible (as long as there is no rain?)
Hey Paul, not saying it’s never been done, but we’d recommend against it. Usal rd from hwy 1 to Usal beach sees a lot of traffic, and if you encounter someone going the other direction it could be a real challenge to get by in a few spots. There are also some tight switchback turns, and the road can get rutted out depending on when mendo county last graded it.

Where is the very first beach at 0:40? Are you allowed to camp there?
It's Usal Beach. Despite what you see, driving or camping on the beach with vehicles is not permitted by State Parks. There are a number of campsites in the actual campground within the alders and redwoods that provide shelter from the wind.
Think a stock Subaru Crosstrek in manual can do it?
Sure, but it's gonna be bumpy from Usual Beach to 4 corners.
How is the gas situation? a full tank plus a 5 gallon reserve seem like it might be a stretch. I have a V6 with max ~22 MPG highway, and I don't have a spare gas can. Will I make it???

How do you pass traffic going the opposite way? trail looks narrow.
Downhill traffic is required to back up.
@@aaronsbraga. Was wondering what if the trail is really narrow along a cliff side for a long distance, like a 1/4 mile or more? I’d be really nervous backing up along a narrow hillside for a long distance. Asking because that’s my main fear. Just starting to try easy overlanding this year

I thought that you are not supposed to camp on the beach ? (Usal beach to be specific)
Correct, it is rarely enforced, but if you check the SP website or give the a ring, they will reassert that driving on the beach is indeed prohibited.
It is posted "No Driving On the Beach" at Usal. The designated camp area is in the adjacent forested area.

Dude. I just did Usal road last weekend (5/19/24). You WILL get desert pin-striping. If it is wet, you should avoid this like the plague unless you have a winch. A 200 foot mud slick can form on a north facing downhill slope. The trail is majorly overgrown and there are Meth Heads at Usal beach. Everything is this video assumes the road has just been graded. It is currently jacked up. Know before you go.
A stock 4x4 can easily manage Usal Road, even after a heavy winter like the winter of 22/23. Been out there many times. Throw it in 4WD and you’ll be fine.
@@OverlandTrailGuides I would be more concerned with the uninitiated scratching a new vehicle up on all the overgrowth. If you've ever seen the mud slick you would know what I am talking about. I had to pull three vehicles up it one year because the road ahead was washed out and we all had to backtrack. You don't really need 4WD as much as you need experience. It's a fun trek, no doubt, but a low clearance vehicle or narrow wheel base would be pushing it.

None. There’s a single pump in Petrolia and another one in shelter cove at the general store if your vehicle doesn’t have enough range.
Usal: 2024 Please let people know that there is NO legal camping or ATV's on Usal Beach. The increase in overland camping along our CA coast has had a severe impact on our wildlands and our wildlife. PLEASE be respectful that you are in a wilderness State park... pack out more than you packed in. Also, this is a dangerously high fire prone area. We had a wildfire in 2019 so no open fires! This area is known to get a lot of people partying, shooting guns and driving drunk. Be careful! We've had hurricane force winds and storms with lots of rain so call State parks before heading anywhere along the CA coast.
