Nice to see you Leo, and I enjoyed the bollocks! Oh Germains…I remember when their blends were readily available. I only bought one tin of medium flake and it was moldy. The Brown Flake was too strong for me at the time but I very much enjoyed Rich Dark and Special Latakia. I have some RDF in a jar that I enjoy on special occasions. Im so glad you are able to find some once in a while. I agree on the comparison between SLF and Penzance, I believe SLF has way more Virginia and way less Latakia, which is why I like it more. Btw that pipe suits you so well! Good luck with the move, the new place sounds amazing! Be well my friend! Emil
Thanks for that info re: germains. It so happened that the last time I was in the UK the couple of online tobacconists I use happened to have stock listed so i could stock up but have noticed since then that there never seems to be any. I’m coming to the UK again early next year so I’ve got in touch with the shops as you suggested to try and organise myself so that I can get what I need for then and can bring it back home with me. So thanks for the knowledge - otherwise I’m sure I just wouldn’t have figured that out and missed out on my only chance to stock up!
Thanks Leo, enjoyed the chat….yes Blakemar’s are great….my prized one is a pre 1962 Cutty , made when Mike’s uncle (Dick Martin was at the helm) ….regarding Germains, I’d be interested to know what percentage of their stock doesn’t even reach British retailers…. Just gets shipped straight to the far east ?? , I’ve got a feeling it’s a high percentage (of course I could be wrong) , but if I’m not wrong then Germains aren’t showing much concern for their home market…..if I am wrong and the majority goes to UK retailers then couldn’t Uk retailers say, okay 50% of this is strictly UK sales only and limited to Two tins per customer….there’s a big demand for it among the UK pipe community but it’s more or less permanently out of stock everywhere
To be fair, I think they focus more on the US market with the Esoterica brand. They get away with more additives that are banned in the EU and UK. They're not a huge company at all, and I spoke to them a couple of years ago and got the impression they can't be bothered with the red tape here
