Wow great video! You are brave to go out there in a kayak! My son caught a massive pike in his small kayak, before he bought a fishing one. The lake is a shallow, back lake here in Eastern Ontario. The hook will rust and fall out fairly quickly and there is only about 30 feet of line which should not pose a problem for it. You did a great job staying cool -not panicking and resisting the urge to tighten the drag a bunch. I’ve seen Kayaks go right over when they tighten the drag too much while the fish is pulling off the side of the kayak. No stretch braid makes it easier to capsize too. Cool video 👍

It looked more like a Mako shark type of jump, but I wasn't there. Mako's are well known for their areal displays when hooked and are mistaken for Great Whites often..
It sure was lol. I didn't even know they were in our waters up here at the time. I was out today in a fishing boat after stripers and we hooked 3 great whites. Fought them for awhile until the line broke off at the hook each time. No jumps though. Thanks for your comment and please subscribe to my channel so you can check out my other videos. Cheers
I don’t know what lbs test your using, but if you can it’s best to point the rod down towards the fish, thenfully tighten the drag or hold the reel until it snaps. Usually it snaps by the hook, instead of leaving 100 ft of line for the fish to get stuck on something underwater.
I've done that many times river fishing when getting snagged on the bottom. The pressure required to snap the 50 pound braid is crazy. I always wrap my hand in a cloth before wrapping the braid around my hand then pull to break the line on shore otherwise the braid cuts right into your skin when try to break the line this way. Now imagine trying to do that with a 200 to 250 pound shark on the line IN A KAYAK. I would have been swimming with the fishes. I was in shalleow water when I cut the line and the shark was directly below me so I estimate that it had only around 20 to 30 feet of line to live with until the hooks rusts then falls out. That's the 1st time I have ever cut a fish off in the over 50 years that I have been fishing. I was afraid that it was going to take all the line off my reel and that would have killed it. Most times we have one rod rigged with a whole makerel or whole herring in the boat hoping to catch an over 40 inch striper. I had no idea there were even white sharks in our waters at that time. Since then, many have been hooked by fellow striper fishers. We hooked up on them 3 times our last outing using just chunks of herring for bait in a big boat. Trust me, we do NOT want to hook one of those.
@@FishingwithRick-bw4bf that's cool. Didn't know stripes like macks I never caught 1 b-4. I do throw out full macks when I'm on the hunt for a mako or thresher. What other baits are good for stripes ? Can I catch a stripe from the surf in San Diego ?

@ I bet it didn’t feel like comedy at the time either 😁 I filled my wetsuit the first time I encountered a great white - will def check your other stuff - nice video
I stopped the video with the fish in the air and could not identify it as a Great White Shark. Is there a tell to identify it as such with which I am unfamiliar? The fisherman got a much better look, so perhaps the I.D. came from him. Assuming it was a Great White, it was not a particularly big one unless you are hooked up with it while in a tiny boat, then you have to wonder who has who.
I did not know until the next day what it was. Two biologists from two differing universities confirmed that it is a juvenile great white shark. They said the real tell was the shape of the nose which is hard to see in the video unless you can go farme by frame. It looked like a whale to me in my 12 foot kayak though, lol.
The side to side s-shaped action of the body when it swam under the boat at 0:41s indicates beyond a reasonable doubt that it’s a shark(the action matches for a vertical tail-fin). A porpoise would have had to be up-and-down (horizontal tail-fin). Not too many other options for that size creature. Amazing experience, and I think I would have had to change my underwear was I in the same position. I have recently taken to kayak-fishing, but will be sticking to lakes and river estuaries for now, because of videos like these!

My thought was that if I fought it, that it would probably take all my line off the reel which would be well over 200 yards of line. Then that could have been very dangerous for the life of fish. Thanks for your comments and don't forget to suscribe to my channel to see my other videos :) One is where a seagull gets wrapped in my line. I think you will enjoy that one. Cheers

I don't fish, I'm just curious what one would expect to happen over time to that fish now that it has a hook stuck in its mouth and 50 feet of line hanging off. Id guess when it eats stuff it'll eventually injest all the line and then possibly excrete it while still being tied to the hook or would it's stomach break down the line?

I've been in the ocean 1 time in a kayak but only right off shore. I'm to scared of sharks to go out any further and I'm too scared to fish off of something as small as a kayak. I'm so scared something will flip it. Please please please be careful out there! Great video! Thanks for sharing!! ❤
A friend of mine flew those small planes that pulled banners to advertise to the tourists. He said if you saw all the large fish he saw near the beach you would never go in the water.

Some people are more adventurous, or like pushing their fate, however MORE LIKELY THAN NONE this incident was a ONCE IN A LIFETIME EXPERIENCE , 👁️ wish it was a better video
Personally going out in the OCEAN 🌊 in a KAYAK is probably done more frequently than one might 🤔think, knowing where to go, preparation emergency 🆘 procedures , buddy system of 2- or more kayaks. 👁 am sure AMERICAN INDIANS & others did much worse w/ less technology & fairly recently have seen that ESKIMOs in ALASKAN AREA still use very interesting fishing methods for survival in the most harsh conditions 😮
@@bruceberger1569 that's how I justify still riding a motorcycle after hitting a deer in June. Hoping it is once in a lifetime experience.
You did a great job staying cool -not panicking and resisting the urge to tighten the drag a bunch. I’ve seen Kayaks go right over when they tighten the drag too much while the fish is pulling off the side of the kayak. No stretch braid makes it easier to capsize too. Cool video 👍

@@FishingwithRick-bw4bf You ABSOLUTELY did the right thing, cutting that fish off. You only had 2 choices; cut the line when the fish is 50ft from the boat, or work to get the fish close to cut the line. Personally, I’d rather have that beast happy to get away from me than have it right in my lap, flipping out and thrashing like the chainsaw that it is. I think those people aren’t really understanding that you are sitting at sea level with almost nothing between you and IT. You weren’t in a boat high and dry and safe.
@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS I was only in 40 feet of water so I guess that there is only about 20 feet of braid on it. I was really hoping it was the over 40 inch striper that I was looking for.
What were you targeting by throwing a whole mackerel in ?
Most times we have one rod rigged with a whole makerel or whole herring in the boat hoping to catch an over 40 inch striper. I had no idea there were even white sharks in our waters at that time. Since then, many have been hooked by fellow striper fishers. We hooked up on them 3 times our last outing using just chunks of herring for bait in a big boat.
