Hooked a Great White Shark while fishing in my Kayak!

- Holy Liftin! I was striper fishing and hooked this Great White Shark. Check out my other You Tube videos. For the doubters, the shark has been varified to be a juvenile great white shark by three biologists from these establishments - 1. The Beford Institute of Oceanography in Nova Scotia, 2. the University of New England in Massachusetts and 3. Department of Integrative Biology from the University of Guelph in Ontario. @@meliwebber7361what happened
The flinch you gave off when you saw the shark surface is absolutely what I would've done, probably so hard I would've dropped all that gear! That baby was still big enough to do damage, at least big enough to drag you about and mess with you, so it's surprising to see how calm it was. You are a lucky man for witnessing this and for coming out unharmed!
OMG....WHAT LAKE???

I would have temporarily lost my mind, maybe even passed out. You did one heck of a job. Kudos to you for just cutting the line. Doubt you'll miss that hook. I would have thrown that fishing pole in the water like “you have it” and sped away. The man was like “I’ll just the cut the fishing line”. WTH. He was so calm.
Because this was all fake.
@@zognowak2842why is everything fake nowadays lol
I think the only reason he was so calm was because at the time he thought it was a porpoise, not sure if he would have been so calm if he’d realized it was a shark, and even less calm if he not only realized it was a shark but then realized it was a Great White. Personally don’t think I’d ever get on something as small as a kayak in the ocean

SO HAPPY YOU CUT THE LINE!!! THANK YOU FOR PUTTING THE SHARK BEFORE LIKES OR FOLLOWERS! 👍👌🦈😍
The shark will have the hook in its mouth with the cut part of the line. I realize he had no other choice but the shark didn’t get away scot free.

The hook will rust and fall out fairly quickly and there is only about 30 feet of line which should not pose a problem for it. My thought was that if I fought it, that it would probably take all my line off the reel which would be well over 200 yards of line. Then that could have been very dangerous for the life of fish. Thanks for your comments and don't forget to suscribe to my channel to see my other videos :) One is where a seagull gets wrapped in my line. I think you will enjoy that one. Cheers
That was NO porpoise!!! LOL Nice job dealing with an INTENSE situation!

How in the world did it take you that long to cut the line?!?!? I would have been all sorts of trepidation with the strength of the thing, but then when it swims under you, Im out there and then.
It's braid, not monofilament. Very strong stuff..
I was really hoping it was the over 40 inch striper that I was looking for. I had a ton of thoughts going through my mind in those few seconds after seeing it the 1st time and I ended up cutting the line at the perfect time leaving only 30 or less of line for it to deal with. If I had known it was a shark I probably would have dealt with it the same way but I wouldn't have stayed another hour to fish. Holy Liftin! Thanks for your comment and don't forget to subscribe to my channel and have a look at my other videos please. Cheers
Poor shark. I hope the hook & line doesn't hurt it.
It won't. The hook will fall out and there is only about 30 feet of line which should not hinder it at all. I too have a love for all animals which you can see if you watch my seagull video.
@@FishingwithRick-bw4bf thank you for your response. I see videos where they catch sharks to tag & release and find hooks in them. So the line won't catch on anything or tie around anything while connected to the shark ? 30 feet seems like a lot.
I was in 40 feet of water and the shark was directly below me when I cut the line. It's 1st pass was very close to me and this one was deeper because I couldn't see it. My guess is that it is between 10 to 30 feet below me so that is the amount of line it still has. No one can say with 100% certainty that the line won't hurt it but the chances would be low. I know that it had no problem taking a ton of line off my reel in a split second so had I not cut the line when I did, it may have taken off with all the line off my reel. That would have been more than 200 yards and that would have a high chance of hurting this beautiful fish. Check out my seagull video and you will see how I care for animals and don't forget to suscribe to my channel. Cheers
Holy Limpet......LOLOL.... The way your voice rose when you first saw it come up. Made my day!

Wow great video! You are brave to go out there in a kayak! My son caught a massive pike in his small kayak, before he bought a fishing one. The lake is a shallow, back lake here in Eastern Ontario. I stopped the video with the fish in the air and could not identify it as a Great White Shark. Is there a tell to identify it as such with which I am unfamiliar? The fisherman got a much better look, so perhaps the I.D. came from him. Assuming it was a Great White, it was not a particularly big one unless you are hooked up with it while in a tiny boat, then you have to wonder who has who.
I did not know until the next day what it was. Two biologists from two differing universities confirmed that it is a juvenile great white shark. They said the real tell was the shape of the nose which is hard to see in the video unless you can go farme by frame. It looked like a whale to me in my 12 foot kayak though, lol.
The side to side s-shaped action of the body when it swam under the boat at 0:41s indicates beyond a reasonable doubt that it’s a shark(the action matches for a vertical tail-fin). A porpoise would have had to be up-and-down (horizontal tail-fin). Not too many other options for that size creature. Amazing experience, and I think I would have had to change my underwear was I in the same position. I have recently taken to kayak-fishing, but will be sticking to lakes and river estuaries for now, because of videos like these!
Man you got lucky.. that could have been much worse. Should have cut the line sooner though! It could have dragged you off the kayak with him.
The 1st time it went under the kayak I thought it was a porpoise, dolphin or a very large striped bass. I was fishing for the big bass and l only ruled out it being a large bass when it jumped. I then cut the line the 2nd time it came to my kayak which is seconds later so really I cut the line at the very best time. I never thought it was a shark and even continued fishing an hour after freeing the shark. After learning that it was a white shark my thoughts were what could have happened if I had continued to fight it and it decided to come back to the kayak a 3rd time but be aggressive. Cheers
Lol😂 . When he said I'm gonna cut the line I don't want that.

I want to know the brand name of the pole and what pound leader he was using😀😀
The pole is a Big Water by Ugly Stik and I was using 50 pound braid. Thanks for your comment and don't forget to suscribe to my channel to see my other videos :) Cheers
Hes extremely lucky that the shark didnt attack his boat!!! iv seen it happen alot!!!
I've seen that too and thought about that a lot after the fact.
To close for comfort at .41 seconds in! That Great White went ride under you thank God it didn't jump out like it did before you cut it!
You're right and I thought about that alot after learning that it was a white shark. I'd say he was just having a look at me that time and then came back for me to cut the line after the breach. I shudder to think what could have happen if I didn't cut the line and it came back a 3rd time. Cheers
Good composure dude! It swam straight at your yak. I would've been dead!😅
Thanks man. My composure would have been totally different had I known it was a white shark. Cheers
Fun fact : If you ever caught a great white at the end of your line. Cut your line right away. They are protected species. If you get caught fishing it or reel in the catch you will fined or even jail time.
And I'd have to be crazy to actually try to catch a shark in a kayak. Thanks for your comments and don't forget to suscribe to my channel to see my other videos :) Cheers
"Suppose you fell over with this fish. Is there anything you could do? Sure. Pray. It'd be like falling out of an airplane without a parachute and hoping you'll land in a haystack. The only thing that'd save you would be God, and since He pushed you overboard in the first place, I wouldn't give a nickel for your chances." - Quint from Jaws
I agree. When your time is up it will happen and can just as easily happen while driving in your car. Cheers
with drivers where i live in Massachusetts id take my chances with Great white over them lol
amazing and intense! next time you get out there, you're going to need a bigger boat. ;)
