  • Predominantly a linear type village along one main street I could in fact turn this one into a circular walk in a way, thanks to a lot of footpaths. It’s been a predominantly agricultural village for centuries, although these days it’s full of more modern housing estates as well. Being so close to Beverley, as you might expect, it’s pretty good for commuters, and it’s a fairly affluent village too, with lots of big grand houses
    The name of the village derives from Anglo Saxon. It probably meant Walca’s farm. There have been many things found in and around the village too. A few miles West is a Bronze Age barrow complex, the remains there include the decapitated remains of Anglo-Saxon criminals. A hoard, and other coins of the Corieltauvi tribe were discovered in large numbers here between 2001 and 2008. They are now at the Yorkshire Museum.
    It has a heavy connection with the Fawsitt family. Eventually, through some generations, Annie Elizabeth Fawsitt would marry John Daniel Ferguson in 1866 and they set themselves up at the hall. John Daniel Ferguson had been known as 'Gravel Jack' before his marriage because as a steward of the Constables of Burton Constable he had been responsible for the sale of gravel from the foreshore of the Humber
    To the East of the village is the site of a former hospital. I’ll admit I couldn’t remember for the life of me what it was called whilst I was filming this. Itss name was Broadgate Hospital which is why the area is known as Broadgate. The hospital was located on a site previously occupied by Broadgate Farm. It was designed by Charles Henry Howell using a Corridor Plan layout. It opened as the East Riding County Asylum in October 1871 and became the East Riding Mental Hospital in the 1920s
    There’s much more to this one than that though. Come with me around WALKINGTON.

    My great grandfather used to be a large part of the Hayride, and lived in Walkington until he passed. He also used to exercise racehorses at Beverley Racecourse

    Thank you for the overview. I have never been to Walkington or even to England yet, but my 3x great-grandmother was born in Walkington, so your video is helpful. I hope to visit the area someday.

    These old psychiatric hospitals definitely have a touch of the workhouse about them. I found a picture online of the white house and it says it was a lodge house for a secondary entrance to the hospital. I would love to have walked round that place before it was knocked down, I did Mansfield General and the army bit of Kings Mill long before urban explores were a big thing😀

      Nicky's got an interest in them as well. One time on holiday we were in Denbigh - that's where the North Wales version was. It's a creepy place, still standing and looks ominous. Even so, would be amazing to get inside and have a look!

    Very informative, but missed the Northlands Hamlet, still in the Parish of Walkington, which has a history of its own.

      @@TheVillageIdiot The Hamlet of Northlands is situated one mile North of the village of Walkington, hence it's name, but still in the parish of Walkington. It was built in the late 1800s, by a local land owner called John Shaw. It then comprised of a large house, a lodge (my property) and stables, and about 20 acres of land. In the early 20th Century it was used as a recuperation area for people suffering from TB. It is still marked on old ordinance survey maps as "The Colony", and to some of the older residents of Walkington, is still refer to it as such. In the 50s, the whole estate was purchased by the racehorse trainer Pat Taylor, who had many successful winners on the turf. In 1967 the estate was purchased by Mr Harold Wiles, who built his own bungalow in the grounds, and who ran the estate as a riding school and livery yard. The estate was eventually split up and the stables were purchased Mr Trevor Banks a well known local horse man who used it as a top class show jumping yard. The stables were eventually purchased by a local builder Mr Eric Bradley, who also continued the show jumping business. Many top class show jumpers such as Caroline Bradley(no relation to Eric) stayed while awaiting passage abroad to such as the Olympics. The stables continued for equine use, and was purchased by the Humberside police authority for the mounted section, and police dogs. The big house from 1982, became a country Hotel and traded as such with various different owners until closure in about 2007, when it became a private house. Recently the stables have been completely renovated to produce a spectacular single large private dwelling.

    "A Traffic Calmed Village"? Could you explain, please? (Ohio, USA)

    • @maryhook9478
      @maryhook9478 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      "A Traffic Calmed Village" is a village that has various methods to slow down traffic. In the UK there is a speed limit of 30mph (20mph in the vicinity of schools) in "built up areas" which is self explanatory. However far too many people have over the years broken the speed limit sometimes driving very fast in these areas. So about 20/30 or more years ago various devices were put in place to slow down traffic particularly through villages. These devices range from semi circular humps in the road called "sleeping policemen" to chicaynes narrowing the road, to speed cameras at the entrance to the village with large notices for the motorist warning them not to exceed the speed limit and if they do so they will face a stiff fine or points on their licence. Or in extreme cases lose their licence altogether.
